That was a seminal line-up for a kid learning about rock at a good time for rock ( sans Disco ). There was a good base from which to draw and there was a transition in the air.

KEX 1956 had All Night Al Priddy.

Don Wright ran some ads a few months ago on local radio. He does motivational speaking for corporations and others. He was looking for business.

At least, that is what it sounded like.

Don Wright was doing afternoons at KB101 in the 80's before it flipped to KRCK. He was relatively new there (as he was at KISN when it was silenced). This may be why he never got hired again -- bad omen? Too bad, I liked him at KB101 . . .

Speaking of which:

KB101 early 80's
Michael OBrien AM
John Erling 9-1 PM
JJ Jefferies
Ron Leonard
Terry Donahue

Is the latter 3 correct?

In case Stoner doesn't get to this, Roger W was a take-off on Robert W. There were several Roger Ws at KISN, alone. Robert W Morgan passed away a few years ago at about the same time as the Real Don Steele, both working for KRTH Los Angeles. As I recall, Uncle Don Wright went from a long run at KGW and followed it with fairly short runs at KISN, KOIN/KYTE, KB101 and KQFM. I don't remember him anywhere after that.

Roger W was from Salem Oregon. Burden (owner) played on the (Robert W) popularity who had become a morning icon at KHJ. There were 4 ROGER W's at Kisn.I was one of them! When I was hired
Steve Brown who was the national p.d for Star Stations gave me that name & jingle. After two weeks he called & said pick out another name & jingle from the dead imaging drawer...Because the real ROGER W (the first one) was leaving KOIL in Omaha to do mornings at Kisn. Are you confused yet? The original Roger W was at Kisn early on as JERRY HUNTER. Then Burden re-named him ROGER W at Koil in Omaha. His Dad owned a used car lot in Salem and if you remember that tall indian guy from the hit movie "One flew over the cukkos nest"? He was a lot boy there and was discovered by Michael Douglas. Roger #1 also was in bit roles (many Dirty Harry movies as a reporter). Roger today lives on an island and owns a radio station where he is a one band band and loving every minute of it. Another Roger W that did afternoons at Kisn worked later with me at KYA as Christopher Kane. He is now in San Diego. Roger #1 was also my p.d at KYA in San Fran. Radio is a small world.

Trixter: This is the only thing I've got on KRCK. Thought you'd enjoy reading the announcement.

ROCK 101 PRESS RELEASE

2040 S.W. First Avenue
Portland, Oregon 97201

At 12:01 am on Monday, November 8th, (1982) Portland's KB101-FM became "Rock 101". The music is definitely AOR, and the jocks are all seasoned AOR veterans, including:

6am - 10am -- Mike Bailey (ex-KINK jock and part of KGON's original crew)

10am - 2:30pm -- Bob Brooks (ex-KQFM personality, and the Program Director who launched KGON's AOR format)

2:30 - 7pm Charlie Busch (former KINK morning man, KREM-FM, etc.)

7pm - Mid. -- John Walker (ex-KZOK jock, KWJJ/KJIB, etc.)

In addition to on-air duties, Bob Brooks is "Rock 101's" assistant Program Director and Music Director. Naturally, the radio station is involved in rock and roll, and actively seeks your input regarding viable new product.

Bob Brooks will be available for music calls Mondays and Tuesdays from 3pm to 5pm. Naturally, if you have business to discuss, your calls are welcomed at anytime. However, Bob WILL be on hand to take your calls directly at the aforementioned times.

Already, we have been getting exciting telephone response to the first 48 hours of "Rock 101", and we are not nearly as awesome as we are going to become. We feel that our experienced AOR staff of former program directors, coupled with a consultancy relationship with John Sebastian, (aka Gary Stevens, former KPAM-FM PD) makes "Rock 101" Portland's radio station to watch. This is John Sebastian's home town, and it's obvious from market research that Portland wants a choice. "Rock 101" is going to give it to them.

Skeptical: Where do I start with you, lets see:

"Kisn-91 Dec 1971"
Is the jock line-up you listed from a KISN survey? If not, how did you date your DJ line-up?

Steptical: You listed the KISN 1976 last DJ line-up as:

Don Wright, mornings

Dick Simms, 3-7pm
Dave Stone, 7-12am

Years ago when I did the KISN history I was told the last DJ line-up was:

Dick Simms, 6-10am
Bill Stevens, 10-3pm
Sam Lee, 3-7pm
Dave Stone, 7-12am

I'm asking anybody. Which line-up is correct? Let's get this important piece of history straight.
Plus, who did overnights after Pat Pattee was let go.

Jimbo: Thanks for the "Al Priddy" line-up add to overnights at KEX 1956. Plus a Thank you to Bruce Cauthers for E-Mailing me about "Jess Mason" in the KEX 1956 line-up. Jess was not a DJ but a comentator who was listed in The Oregonian KEX line-up at 10:15pm with no end time. That leaves open who did 10:30pm to 12am? was it Al Priddy also?

Semoochie: Uncle Don Wright also did mornings on KSGO starting in September 1988.

Stoner: Wonderful background information on the name Roger W. Thanks for posting it.

Stoner maybe you can fill me in....is one of these Roger W's........Roger WWWW Garrett (say the W's as fast as you can) who worked at KRBE in Houston Texas in the early 80s?

I have an air check of the whole air staff when KRBE was at its finest moment. Its one of the best station air checks I have ever heard for an early 80s "CHR super-rock" format.

Dan Dobner is even on the air check as a part timer who is just landing a gig there.

Skeptical,

John Erling is still around. He's the voiceover guy for all those gun show spots on TV.

Bwana Johnny is now a Seattle resident. I had the pleasure of working with him at KMGK-FM, Des Moines, where he did 6-10 am. Bwana's sense of humor was stellar. He once ran through the P.D.'s house during a party yelling, "I'm gonna throw up... where do ya want the mural?!!"

Craig, in Dec 1971 there was a KISN survey which fearured all the KISN jocks sitting for one picture, including Bob Noonan, the one I forgot, AND yep, Pat Pattee was in the group shot too.

I have several 12-31-71 airchecks, one by Mike O'Brien & Bob Noonan and another by Ron Ugly Thompson. In Thompson's aircheck he mentions by name goodguys Bobby Noonan, Jon Cristy (he actually spoke on the air) michael O'Brien and Tom Michaels.

Also there was a large end-of-year countdown survey that was sent out to listeners who requested one -- it had a LARGE picture of all the KISN goodguys mentioned above.

I have airchecks of Dick Sims doing 3 to 7PM from june 1976 up to and including KISN's last day in september. If he was also doing mornings it would be a surprise to me.

I never heard Dick Sims in the mornings. I did hear Uncle Don a few times.

Man, I sure don't remember Ron Leonard doing evenings, but I do remember John Walker, then Terry Donahue nights during the oldies/Hot AC phase. Bwana Johnny replaced Don Wright afternoons a short time before the flip to KRCK.

I remember "Earling in the Morning" and Steve Naganuma (sp?) middays during the Rock Deluxe time period.

randy, the reason I "remember" that lineup so well was because KB101 had this cool production liner which started with a jingle, then the names of all the jocks in the order of their shifts and ended with another jingle. They played bit so often it got burned in my brain. But memory can play tricks . . .

I did just now check out the date -- that lineup was during the Summer of 1981. If I'm correct, "oldies" was only played during the noon hour during that period.

Great thread!

Speaking of Uncle Don Wright.

He wasn't on KQFM. He took over for Michael O'Brien ding morning on KKRZ, "The Rose." A short time after he got that job, he was blown out when they switched to Z100, which was jockless for the first six weeks or so of the format. Didn't Don do mornings at KKSN for a short time in the late 1980's?

Remember when he replaced Ed Anderson as host of "Northwest At Night" on KEX in the summer of 1984? Every Friday night, Don called himself "Doctor Love" when NW at Night became "The Loveline."

"The Loveline" show made for some of the strangest nights of my radio career. A classic aircheck moment was when Bob Miller had to fill in at the last minute to host "Loveline."

I became an avid Portland radio listener in the later 80's, when 101.1 was Classical. At that time, 101.1 really "boomed" into Eugene, compared to the other Portland FM's. (Today, 101.1 doesn't sound so good in Eugene.)

Steve Taylor E-Mailed me. He remembers Don Wright also on KEX doing NW At Night for a time.

Steve also remembers Chuck Webber doing overnights on KISN after Pat Pattee left. Can anybody confirm this? Stoner, what do you say?

Craig, actually the line up for KGON 1977 was more like 1978 or 1979 because BA was still at KVAN and George Beier didn't come here until Jerry Ostertag was our PD. Dick did Midnight-6am. 1977 went through several changes. Gloria and Dick were already there on weekends when I got there in March. Bob Brooks was PD and hired me. Then he left and Jim Robinson was the PD, who also did afternoon drive until he left the following year. So, that line up seems more like late 1978 through 1979.

Whatever, it was all fun.

Hey, remember Ed Hepp? He did mid-days when I got to KGON and I always loved his voice. Very nice man. I heard from him and his family every now and then but haven't heard about him in years.

More recently how about the line-ups on KXYQ Q105 during the late 80's early 90's and which station had the better line-up at that time versus Z100?

Oh, and Trixter...
KGON 1983...the year we all got fired after the disasterous "Rock of the 80's" mess.
The only full time person that didn't get blown out was Marty. I went back to part time in the Summer of 1984 when I was expecting my son, and didn't return to full time until Turner would come back with me to mornings in Spring of 1986. So, those are the baby years for me and I don't remember much except for diapers and teething.

Thanks Radiowoman! Stoner got me going on this thread before my research had started on the KGON part of the 92.3 history currently underway. If this thread would've been done a few months down the line, I would've had the line-ups finished and confirmed by You & the KGON Gang. Oh well, this history thing is always a work in progress! I'm taking notes from You as well as every bodies posts.

I thought KMJK had some great dee jays when it played classic rock in the 80's I thought it was so dumb of them to go to top 40. There was a survey of what the listeners wanted, I remember, but the staion had its mind made up. Todd Brant and Rick Rydell were fun to listen to. I think Glyn Shannon did middays.

The term "Smooth Jazz" hadn't been coined yet, but that's basically what KKCY was, just a little less homogenized than todays SJ. I'm thinking the switch from Classical was in March of '89.

Q-105 did have a hard edge in it's early incarnation due to the lack of a true, current-based rock station at the time. KGON was all classic rock by then.

1p-3pm J.J. Jeffrey (+ production)
3-7pm John Walker
7pm-Mid Terry Donahue
Mid-6am Matt Williams

KB101...January '82-Nov. '82:

Don't recall the exact lineup

Michael O'Brien mornings
Uncle Don Wright PM Drive
...race around the world promotion
Bwana Johnny..was part-time I thought,
as was Ron Leonard.

You've got the lineup for KRCK...which was launched late November '82. Local radio had no inclination of the power of that station, since the change occured around Thanksgiving and diary returns...etc...during the holidays can mask real activity.

Spring '83 Arbitron showed KRCK #1 12+, 18+ Men,
18-34 adults....#1 something like 32 dayparts & demos!!!

Interestingly...every one of the on-air guys had been a PD...had knowledge of Portland rock radio.
The station began with a Pizza Parlor get together between BOB BROOKS, JOHN WALKER, CHARLIE BUSCH, MICHAEL BAILEY & MYSELF to bond.
We launched with a music core we felt good about.
Then brought in John Sebastian...who was consulting about 20 top-rated AOR stations across the country. We installed an in-house call-out research department...and research 30 currents...& 30 library titles each week!!!

We called a meeting of the Jocks for Sebastian's first trip in...and went over Song titles. John tossed out song titles that were researching in other markets...GOLD & CURRENT. Based on our knowledge of what had gotten airplay in the market...they went into appropriate rotations...or became SECRET WEAPONS if they had not been played in the market.

SECRET WEAPON titles worked their way through the system...just like a new song. EXPOSURE..RESEARCH...APPROPRIATE ROTATION. We took one "nuclear tipped missile" after another to the bank during the Spring of '83. That's why the station scored a 9.9 share!!!

Charlton Buckley...the station's new owner told me, "I don't care about making money...I just don't want to spend any."

I recall telling him, "You have 2 kids. What happens if you stop feeding them?" Every day was Radio 101 with the guy...so I accepted an offer in Denver Fall '83, where John Walker & Ron Leonard both joined me in a Mile High battle.

That's interesting about "SECRET WEAPON[s]" on KRCK. I have always thought certain stations could benefit from a small number of carefully chosen lost nuggets to reduce listener burn-out, but that seems to go against today's programming mindset of only playing songs everyone knows the words to. It's conceivable that there are non-hit songs out there that may be more relevant than some former #1 hits if the audience ever got a chance to hear them.

Thanks for posting, Robin. KB-101 from Fall of '80 to the end stands out as one of my all-time favorite stations.

KB101 was a fantastic place in its time. Great jingle package, programming and energy. Somewhere in there (1981-82) I did the graveyard shift for 6 months or so (aka Freddy Chrysler). I remember trying to make it to 5:30 and Michael O'Brien abruptly coming in, cheerful as a buttercup, saying "GOOOD MORNING" and turning the lights up full tilt.

I liked KB101 it had some hot deejays. KQFM had oldies which seemed odd to me because both were next door to each other. I used to like to listen to John Walker whenever that female janitor called in. KQFM had more oldies but I liked the deejays on 101 better. That seems to be a trend, 2 stations with the same formats next door. 1480 and 1520 both had oldies formats.

Outsider: Thanks for the KARO line-up.

On KB101: I do remember Ron Leonard doing evenings in Fall 1979. He must have been on the first line-up after the format change.

I visited KB101 in early December 1979 still at the time taking broadcasting classes at PCC. One of our students was a KB101 intern. I was a big KB101 fan and knew they might need Christmas music with the format change just a few months earlier in September. I mentioned it to the KB101 intern to mention to them.

KB101 contacted me. I brought up a big box of records. At the time they were still in the old KOIN building. I'm ashamed to admit this, I can't remember if I met with the P.D or M.D of KB101. Can't remember his name but a nice guy. We carted up my Christmas music all afternoon in the production room.

All of a sudden a guy blasts into the room in haste. He had the room reserved for spot production and the (PD/MD?) explained that I was nice enough to come down with my records and let them record them and could he wait, we were almost finished. Well what could the guy say? So he leaves and I ask the (PD/MD?) who was that? And he says oh that was Ron Leonard.

"It wasn't EZ...more an instrumentally based version of KINK..."

101.1 KKCY certainly had a different sound, compared to 95.5 KXL-FM...although they both played mostly instrumentals. "New Age" would probably be the best classification for KKCY's format.

I was credited by Stoner as having once been "Jerry Hunter" on KISN. The true story is that I was originally hired by Steve Brown at KISN in the early 60's and I used the name, "Jim Hunter", a name that I was using as a recording artist. I had one song that charted, "Just Being Young" and the station had some confidence in the possibility that I might make a hit record. (It never happened.) My birth name was "Jerry Lambert" and as Stoner said, my dad owned an auto dealership in Salem. He also was responsible for securing Will Sampson as the "chief" in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". My dad was Mel Lambert, one of America's most celebrated rodeo announcers. (Pro Rodeo and Cowboy Halls of Fame inductee)

My name was changed (legally) to Roger W. Morgan in 1968 when I joined Star Stations in Omaha at KOIL. I've been Roger W. Morgan ever since.

Roger: Thanks for post the information!

I've tracked "Jim Hunter" on Kisn using 91 surveys on the web. The earliest I have you at Kisn is April 16, 1966 on air 3-7pm, through October 9, 1966. The next closest survey was Roger W. Morgan by February 11, 1967 also 3-7pm. Do you have any 91 surveys that fill in those gaps? I'm trying to pin point when you began at Kisn and when you changed your name.

Did you leave Kisn between the name change?

I also have you at KBZY before Kisn. Were you at any other stations before KBZY?

What record label did you record for?

In addition I have Roger W. Morgan 5:30-9am by February 5, 1969. When did you begin mornings?

Whoa, Bob Atkins on KEX in 1956 was a surprise. He would have been just 24 then.

KPOJ had an interesting schedule in the 1960s; they were early in local talk (Dick Novac, Doug Baker) and of course their jazz shows from the Hoyt Hotel in the evenings (Charlie LaFrancaise), somtimes airing tunes live from the Roaring 20s room.

Still holding hope someone will trip over any airchecks of Bob McAnulty. A friend of his has expressed great interest in finding one. '66 was a bit early for home taping, but KPFM had a "hi-fi" audience, perhaps something will be found in an attic.

Barney Keep, 6-10am

Jack Angel in the late 1960's went on to a good career at KMPC and later KFI. From there, he developed a prolific and wildly successful career as a voice actor here in Hollywood. He's 76 and still one of the most active voice actors in the business.

Wow...I haven't visited this site in a long time, but good to see that it's still alive.

Craig...you asked some questions about my various stints at KISN. I was there the first time in about '63 as Jim Hunter. I was recording for two small independent labels in Los Angeles, Corby and Pamela Records. I had several releases and only one that charted.

I left KISN when Larry Lujack and Jerry Kaye left KJR in Seattle, and I worked briefly at KJR in Lujak's old spot as "Jimmy Rabbit". Needless to say, a Star Stations "time and temp man" didn't play well with the Lujack fans and I moved on to KNUZ in Houston, going back to the name, Jim Hunter.

From Houston, I returned to Star Stations in Omaha as Roger W. Morgan in about '67. I left Omaha and went to WIFE in Indianapolis in '72, then returned briefly to KISN before going to San Francisco in about '73. I hired Dave Stone at KYA in San Francisco and acted in a bunch of episode of "Streets of San Francisco" and the Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry film, "The Enforcer".

I was in San Diego for quite awhile at Magic 91, and then returned for a third trip to Omaha.

I left Omaha about 6 years ago and moved to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands where I now own and operate paradise 93.5 FM (www.paradise935fm.com)

Life is good in paradise!

It's great to read about my old pals and to know that there are a few KISN survivors beside myself.

Thanks for the information Roger!

I've heard from Dave Stone there were other DJ's that used the name Roger W. Morgan on KISN. I've seen Kisn music surveys with Roger W. Morgan listed 5:30pm to 9pm between Feb 5, 1969 to March 19, 1969. Was that you? Sounds to me from what you posted above, you were at KOIL. Who was Roger W. Morgan in 1969 on KISN?

Thought I'd post information from a full page ad in The Oregonian, December 20, 1983 page B12. This had to do with "Foodday's Christmas Contest"
"300 Winners! Up to $7,000. each week for you and a charity." The ad featured pictures of the morning air personalties at most stations. It's another time capsule.

I know a guy by the name of "Paul Havdahl" (most used air name in Seattle and the Tri-Cities ) who claims to have been one of the Roger W. Morgans on KISN in 1969???

I know he worked there, he talked about going out to the transmitter studio to do his show several times a week to satisfy license stipulations.

To the best of my knowledge, this guy never worked on KISN as Roger W. Morgan.

I'm the real Roger W. Morgan, and there was one other who worked there under that name, but it wasn't Paul Havdahl.

One correction to ROGER W's first post above, I believe he arrived at KISN in late 65/early 66.

I met him at a couple of ED DAUGHERTY's Salem Armory "spectaculars" in 65-66 and he was JIM HUNTER on KBZY, at the time.

I have a JPEG of a KISN Survey somewhere showing a different ROGER W MORGAN...rather than JIM HUNTER. Will have to try to locate it and forward it to CRAIG ADAMS for his research.

I know STONER spoke of several other ROGER W's that played KISN...but by far the mainstay was our guy from Salem...now in the Virgin Islands.

All you old fans, please send him sunblock.

Well you know how this goes.....Paul ( Demeres ) Havdahl might have been Roger W. at some point when Don Burden or the KISN PD told him he was. He claimed that he was that name in 69'for some period of time , I dont remember the day-part now, also that he was on the air in 69' under his own handle, Paul Havdahl on some other day-part that was a nightime gig as I remember.

Paul left KISN and wound up at "Colorful KOL" for quite a few years, I guess. He was always telling me about how Burden owned or had rights to certain DJ names, I dont know how all that works, but I remember hearing the stories about it. Paul is retired now, he must be about 61 or 62. He came back to the Tri-Cities in 1996 or so and I worked with him for 5 or 6 years @ Oldies 95.7

The next time I see him @ Wal-Mart or Winco (boy are we both whoopin' it up nowdays eh?) I will have to ask him about all this controversy and put him on the spot...ha ha ha ....

In any case we all know who the "REAL" Roger W. Morgan is , dont we??

-----The Roger W. Morgan Mystery Men-----

After E-Mailing Roger W. Morgan aka Jim Hunter, Michael O'Brien, Robin Mitchell & Dave Stone. Here's what we know. O'Brien remembers Roger W. Morgan, referred to in this writing as "RWM" from this point on, as being really Christopher Cane. Cane was another DJ name he had used. We don't know his real name but from what O'Brien said, he was the first KISN RWM in 1967. Cane replaced Jim Hunter, real name Jerry Lambert who had left for Omaha to become RWM at KOIL.

Christopher Cane as RWM took over mornings when O'Brien left in January 1969. O'Brien returned to mornings in January 1970 and Chris Cain aka RWM might have been moved to another Star Station. This opens the door to when David Stone and Paul Havdahl could have been named RWM for a period of time. O'Brien left mornings in July 1972, replaced by the returning Christopher Cane as RWM again. (verified by Dave Stone). Then in late 1973 Jim Hunter who had been RWM at KOIL, returned, replacing Cane in mornings as RWM for the first time on KISN.

This leads me to believe that most Kisn listeners remember Christopher Cane as RWM in Portland.

I understand that Michael O'Brien was supposed to go to KPAM after returning from Calgary but had second thoughts and ended up back at KISN instead. I believe my source at the time was Paul Hanson but it's been over 37 years so I'm not sure. It seems like I called Michael O'Brien after he returned to KISN and he acknowledged the KPAM gig but I don't remember the rest of his explanation. It could have been a better offer or just thought of as a more sound company. KPAM wasn't much yet in 1970 and KISN was a legend!

It was CKY in Winnipeg that O'Brien was AMD before returning to KISN, & ultimately departing for mornings/PD at KPAM some time later. MOB even had a equity % with Wally Rossman, but had to sue Wally to get his money when KPAM was sold to Bob Duffy the owner of Cristal Rep firm and morphed to KCNR!!!

Wally bad-mouthed Michael (because of the pending law suit) when I hired him for mornings at KB101...but Verl Wheeler (GM) and I decoded his impetus. O'Brien was a great hire, and funny guy with a loyal following. He did have somewhat of a rep for "working blue," but I found him able to "take it to the edge" without offending women, because they knew he could be "bad"...but with his "little boy" charm, they all wanted to mother him.

Randy: Yes I think You're right, Mark Richards was on Kisn-FM but for only a month or so. I remember Mark wanting back on the simulcast but was only allowed on Kisn 91 and Tim Gordon was only heard on the FM side for his first 3 hours. Mark left Kisn 91 in September 1988.

Here's a memory maker published one day before the Kisn-FM debute:

KKSN BOOSTS AUDIENCE BY PLAYING GAMES
Oregonian, The (Portland, OR)
February 5, 1988
Author: PETER FARRELL - of The Oregonian Staff
Estimated printed pages: 3

There's something of a success story brewing at KKSN (910 AM).

And that's a surprise for those who remember that the latest radio ratings had KKSN on the bottom of the list.

The big news is that the station's nighttime ratings are up. In fact, they are up something like 240 percent, says Mark Richards, who mentions it only because those are his ratings.

The huge percentage increase is misleading, because in the last book KKSN could barely establish that anyone was listening at night. While most stations not broadcasting sports events or national talk stars do relatively poorly at night, Richards says KKSN gets its highest ratings when he is playing games with his audience.

Richards is the host of ``The Radio Game Show'' from 7 to 10 p.m., and he came in with a 2.4 rating in the last rating book. Next Monday he will be a guest on ``Geraldo'' at 3 p.m. on KOIN (6), but not because of his radio ratings.

He has run a school for game show contestants in California, and the ``Geraldo'' folks flew him to New York, drove him around in a limo and put him up in a nice hotel just so he would tell about it on the air.

So viewers across the country will be invited to tune in to a discussion about television game shows with special guests Alex Trebek of ``Jeopardy'' and ``Concentration,'' Bub Eubanks of ``The Newlywed Game,'' and Mark Richards of KKSN.

Don't look for heavy controversy in that crowd. ``It was a light show,'' said Richards. ``The nearest thing we had to a rough time was with Eubanks.'' Richards said that he did a test game with a member of the audience and asked a question about ``making love,'' and Eubanks objected that they never say that on ``The Newlywed Game.'' ``They call it `making whoopee,' or something,'' Richards said.

Who said there were no standards?

Richards has done these talk show gigs before, building a reputation as something of an authority on TV game shows. He is also a producer and announcer for ``The Money Game,'' the weekly game show tied to the Oregon lottery that starts a week from Saturday on KOIN (6). He helped to design the games.

Another radio personality, Tom Parker, will be the host, but it will be Richards who will announce the prizes, and he can't wait until a contestant wins the big prize on that show and he gets to say the words all would-be game show hosts live for: ``It's a brand new car!''

KOIN has held rehearsals of ``The Money Game,'' with a full dress rehearsal coming up Saturday with an invited audience. Richards will be their warm-up man.

Hi everyone, I just stumbled across this site... I was "Ben Stone" on Magic 107 from '83-'85, 10 pm to 2 am. I also did voices for the morning show, particularly the "Assistant Public Affairs Director" Butch Getroidel, a Stan Freberg-like character who constantly tried to sneak on the air during Alan Budwill's morning show. I'd been on the air under a different name in Reno and San Jose before coming to Portland. Steve Naganuma had been doing 7-midnight, and Mello Jack 12-6, when PD Cosmic Jon Barry decided to split the shifts further, putting me between Steve and Jack, who went to 6-10 pm and 2-6 am respectively. It was a super-fun time slot and really the last hurrah of great four-hour shift super-intense CHR in PDX. I was a grad student at the time (in theology!), so I'd work on very esoteric papers for the three minutes I had between talk-ups. Loved it!! Jack was very nice to me, but he clearly did not like the switch. Soon, weekender Alex Darby took Jack's 2-6 am slot. I loved my time there, I was fortunate enough to be there at the peak of Magic's run, and Steve was so great to work with.
