I remember doing their radio spots at KPOK and actually having to choke through the phrase "high pay, prestige and job security of a radio announcer."

Terry's comment made me remember something similar with Columbia School Of Broadcasting ads that ran on KOL - Seattle in the late 60's.

The client insisted that the DJs "ad lib" from their fact sheet for a "more authentic sell."

The first day Bobby Simon recounted one of the benefits as "broads." The client was unhappy...put us on notice we were in jeopardy of losing the account.

The next day, Robert O. Smith followed their copy points: "How would you like to be doing what I'm doing. Enjoy the benefits of being in radio....high pay, prestige, job security. At this point he added the aside, "Yeah...it's got all the job security of being a migrant farm laborer!!!"

You guessed it. The account was history. However, this was a different age. One in which the air personalities were encouraged to entertain, and there were risks inherent. Stations had to have a 3 Year Plan....because that's how long you had to hold the license before selling...even if you never turned nickle one of profit.

Robin...that reminded me of a story Tom Parker shared once about a liner he was reading at KFRC. It was a liner card that had blank areas where the jock was to add their name...on the liner card it said (add your name here)...or something like that. Sooooo...Tom starts in on the liner and reads it verbatum...including "add your name here" Right after the break....PD is on the hotline...."That's not funny".

There was also a broadcasting school down on about 2nd & Arthur in the building on the north side of Arthur in the 80's and also one in Tigard on 99w, just off I-5 in the strip mall next to the Burger King and PC Supply. That was around '90. Sorry I don't remember the exact dates or names. The one on 99W did not last very long.

The one on 99w, can't remember the name, was the one Eric Norberg was affiliated with, along with a guy who's name I can't remember, who used to teach in the old radio program at P.C.C.

I attended Ron Bailie in the late 70s. 35 people in my class on day one, at least a couple who never showed after that and maybe three of us who ever got on the air. (Took me nearly a year after completeing the course to get my first job.)What a waste of time and money. The major hilite was listening to "Shotgun" Sam Lee as guest lecturer the first day. Beige color disco suit, with sweat rings so bad they even showed through his coat!

Ron Bailie: "The ep-uh-tome of dia-phrag-matic breathing."

Is any of his family still in jail?

So who's left teaching radio broadcasting in PDX besides MHCC?

According to phonebooks, KGAR was at 949 S.W. Oak St. from December 1966 to December 1970. So the move took place sometime between December 1969 & 70. It fits. KGAR then moved back the their original location at 2808 Walnut St. in Vancouver, listed in December 1971.

In Fall of 1972, made decision to go into radio, so naturally thought I should go to "school" for it. Choices at the time were Ron Bailie, PCC, or MHCC. If had more $$, then Lane CC had a pretty good program, or U of O. Checked out Bailie, even at 18 I could see that was a rip. Checked out Keith Allen at PCC, nice guy, kind of a "radio hip" type, and they said they placed more people directly out of school than anyone in town. I ended up at MHCC with Ralph Rogers and Co.(Semoochie was one). Had a great time, got a job right away.

They seem to be the only one left. I know U of O has a station, but I don't believe it's a complete study program. I know most of you think going to school to study radio is a waste. The MHCC grads seem to be getting jobs, albeit the "quality" of the grads is sometimes questionable, as is the quality of the jobs.

So how do the kids at the various campus radio stations like KPSU at Portland State get their training? Is it hands-on? I don't think PSU has any kind of radio program.

I once hired a Ron Ballie grad, he is now in a large market doing mornings and doing well. Eric Norberg?!! He was once my pd, and he is a very very smart fella. Is he still around? Although sleeping on a cot in the transmitter room so he wouldn't have to drive home at night seemed a bit weird, and I hope didn't cause some sort of weird disease. I haven't heard his name since Gavin left.

Yes Craig, that was Keith Allen. I stopped in one day, while on lunch break from the Tigard Freddies and met both him and Eric Norberg. It was a shame the school went out of business, but with so few jobs available these days, there's not much need for broadcasting schools anymore, is there?

Ron Bailie had his glory days with the school in the late 60's and early 70's in Seattle (Bill Johnstone and I were in the Bailie class of '69 together and we both got jobs right away). His classroom on Denny Way was decent with a couple of control rooms etc. It was only after he tried to expand that he got into trouble...bought an FM in Lake Tahoe and tried to grow the school....
Ah...but who can forget the "Bailie Bash" afternoons on KJR in Seattle from 1955-58!

"...who can forget the "Bailie Bash" afternoons on KJR in Seattle from 1955-58!"

Shouldn't it be "Who can remember"?

Because:

A. It was Seattle, and

B. most of us weren't born yet

(Class of '59, Good Sam, PDX)
