You sure a source of valuable information Craig! Where do you get it from? I wonder though why more than one station used the 833 spot on the AM dial & who had radios in the earliest days of radio. I also wonder if some "pirate" type of radio was used before the 1920's.

833 was the only frequency used in the beginning. Perhaps someone with a crystal set could enlighten us about cat whiskers.

It took 6 Months to do it. I started with Original Goverment records, then added Original air dates with microfilms. Some like KBND Bend have never been researched and debut here for the first time ever. In the beginnning only spark operators heard the 7X stations. 833kc (360 Meters) was the Commerical channel. Other channels were used for spark operators & Goverment.

I've got a lot of KBND stuff. About 5 year ago I looked at the back issues of the Bend Bulletin. I got probably 50 pages of Central Oregon Radio articles. There is more stuff out there I'm sure. Someday I'll have to write about it.

The following quote is from the textbook, Broadcasting in America: A Survey of Television and Radio, by Sydney Head:

"In 1921, 833.3 kc was assigned to news and entertainment stations, and a second channel, 618.6 kc to crop and weather report stations. The rapid proliferation of broadcast stations soon created intolerable interference. Further increasing the number of frequencies assigned to broadcasting did not solve the problem, for the stations multiplied faster than ever.
"To Complicate matters, the engineering crudity of many early broadcast stations made them quite incapable of holding closely to an assigned frequency. Worse, some stations were portable and the owners moved them from place to place, completely disrupting any orderly plan of service. An ever-increasing amount of interference resulted. This in turn led some station owners to take matters into their own hands. They began to change frequency, power, times of operation, and location, all in violation of their licenses. Unauthorized changes, of course, merely created worse interference so that a vicious circle was set into motion, and the broadcast service became more and more degraded."

Brent: I guess I should have said KBND hasn't done any research, since the Broadcasting Yearbook lists only the year. Randy: Great Post!
