Saw an article in the Portland Business Journal that the non-profit running KBPS-FM has changed its call letters to KQAC. The non-profit itself renamed themselves from KBPS Public Radio to All Classical Public Media. The KBPS letters revert back to Benson HS.

What will happen to KBPS sign in front of Benson High School.

At some point the KBPS sign on our building will have the FM removed and 1450 put up. KQAC will likely have a smaller sign in the window that they will be able to take with them when they eventually relocate to their own facility.

KBPS-FM becomes KQAC

Beginning ten days ago you may have noticed a different configuration of the alphabet when we give our hourly legal station identification. That's because the call letters KBPS-FM have reverted back to Benson High School from whence they came. (K-BPS = Benson Polytechnic School.) For decades your radio station was owned and operated by Portland Public Schools, but in 2003 a non-profit corporation was formed to buy the license from PPS. That organization, the KBPS Public Radio Foundation, completed this important task and is now known as All Classical Public Media, Inc.

The FCC requires radio stations to give their unique identifier, their four letter call sign followed by their city of license, once per hour as programming allows. We searched for new call letters that would "catch the ear," that would compliment our other call letters in the Gorge and on the Coast, and that would be somehow meaningful. So we chose KQAC. K because every station west of the Mississippi starts with the letter K. Q because we stand for Quality. And AC, representing All Classical.

So now once per hour you hear KQAC Portland, KQHR Hood River, KQDL The Dalles, and KQOC (Oregon Coast) Gleneden Beach. It's a small change but a meaningful one which represents one more step on the road to a bright future. Did we have a moment of silence when the old KBPS call letters went back to Benson? Of course we did. And then we went on about doing the people's business: producing great radio and beautiful classical music for Portland, the Pacific Northwest, and the world via the Internet.
