Do radio stations have to send in an entry fee to be considered for an award or is this industry people acknowledging industry people?

AP awards usually do a good job of identifying the "best" in the market. They are judged by AP members in another market to limit conflicts of interest. But as far as radio is concerned, like all awards of this type, if a station is "doing it with smoke and mirrors" its sometimes hard for those judging to really know how good a station is. I was on a judging panel one year and the station we gave a best newscast award to turned out to not be the best. They were using a lot of audio from a TV partner, as well as pulling reporter Q & A from TV. Because they were not crediting it as such we assumed they had a huge staff and were covering everything. Other stations in the market challenged our decision and the offending station was disqualified. What you hear isn't always what it seems.
