As of 12:01am Thursday 4/23/09 KBPS-FM will cease to exist. KBPS-FM now goes by the slogan of "All Classical" and has taken the call letters KQAC. All Classical's station in the Dalles is KQDL...Hood River is KQHR and their newest station at Gleneden Beach is KQOC (for Oregon Coast). Given the experience when the FM changed its phone number nearly two years ago, it will only take their listeners about a decade to understand that the call letters have changed!! :-)

I noticed Sat during the Opera that KQAC and KBPS-FM had swapped call letters... so the second shoe will drop thurs.

88.1 in Gleneden Beach will have used the KBPS-FM calls for only about a week, is that anywhere close to a record for shortest use of a call sign?

Most likely KBPS-FM listeners get confused with the original KBPS and vice versa.

KQAC also has a certain special meaning for Oregon Ducks....

I thought they were going for "Quality All Classical".

Craig...you are correct. There has been a lot of confusion over the years between KBPS-AM & FM...especially now that we are no longer co-owned! The change will make it easier for both of us to market ourselves better.

As for the "Q"...The folks at the FM discovered that no one was using the KQ sequence and that let them tailor their calls in the various locations...AC for all classical, HR for Hood River, DL for The Dalles, and OC for Oregon coast.

Quadraphonic All Classical, perhaps? ;o)

Didn't KQIV have a classical format at some point or other?

"Didn't KQIV have a classical format at some point or other?"

The answer is here under "Quest for a call sign."

Bill: Do you know what the KQAC calls stand for? Is it as Semoochie mentioned "Quality All Classical"?

Of course, 106.7 was also K-Bach but that came much later.

so what next?

KQBD - Bend?
KQEG - Eugene?
KQCR - Corvallis?
KQTK - Tillamook?
KQAS - Astoria?

I know that you cannot use KQED, KQEI, or KQET.

I thought KQFM stood for Quality fm. its in Hermiston. They don't have that much anymore. I listened to that all the time on my dad's stereo. it was the only all family channel there was in the 60's. there was KXL but I liked Q better. Probably because there weren't as many commercials

The Portland KQFM (from 1954) was derived from the name of one of the owners, Quenton H. Cox (or was his name H. Quinton Cox ?), who went by the nickname "Q".

Could you please elaborate?

Jr. Tech: It was Quenton H. Cox but I've also seen him listed as H.Q. Cox. In the past for some reason, writers would list the middle initial first, which can be confusing for a researcher.

Bill: Are you saying Semoochie was wrong posting "Quality All Classical"? And to delete "Quality" from the meaning?

I have been told the only reason they have the Q in the call letters is that with the Q they could get all the calls they wanted for "All Classical", The Dalles, Hood River and "Oregon Coast" (Gleneden Beach). As far as I know the word Quality was never thought of. I guess it might be considered a "happy accident".

Hey guys have you noticed you can't say just "Thanks!" on the board anymore. It rejects it as too short!

Until recently, I did not realize the scope of The Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The new KQAC will receive funding from them, as does OPB--which now includes KMHD--and even KBOO (!)

I like semoochie answer "All Quality Classical" That fits the format and what they are doing. 88.1 on the coast has been there for years but as a translator for KBPS-FM. I do like the calls KQAC to bad it's not in Bend as they got KQAK on 105.7 hahaha

I understand it that KBOO no longer receives CPB money via the Community Service Grant; they were cut off because they couldn't meet the listening audience requirement.
