Barry Hansen, a.k.a. Dr. Demento also had a very large record collection at one time. Unfortunately, according to a newspaper article I read circa 1988, the floor of the room where they were stored collapsed under their weight! The article did not state how many of his records were destroyed during this accident. Does anybody know, who has the larger collection, Dr. Demento or Dirty Dave?

That Would Be Dr. Demento. I Saw Him At A Record Show About 20 Years Ago. I ask Him How Many Records He Had The Number Was 240,000. At That Time I Only Had 40,000. I Stopped Buying Records in 2000. Now its MP3's. When I Do Weddings Birthday Partys And Things My Hard Drive Has Over 38,000 Songs in it. Sure is Different From The Record CD Days. I Said Five Years Ago That CD's Are On There Way Out And They Are. Its Download All The Way. its Very Sad To Me.

"Number Was 240,000"

Was that before of after the floor collapse? When he was at Reed in the 60s, many of the records in his collection were 78s... I suspect few of those survived :-(

I have never bothered to count my records, but I roughly estimate that I have 100. These guys put me to shame!

I still buy records, when I can get a good deal on them. I have tried buying downloadble songs from Amazon, but this has been a less than satisfactory experience; occasionally, these mp3 files are damaged, which results in audible glitches. If I really want a "digital quality" recording, I am going to stick with buying CDs.

Yup, that is often how I do it too, when I am not recording off Muzak. Just got a record (yes, one of the big CDs that you play with a needle instead of a laser) of "Zenyatta Mondatta" at Freddy's a week ago. I haven't played it yet......

I figure I must have somewhere in the range of 100-150 records or so. This is a relatively small figure however, when compared to my almost 2,000 CDs.

(Downloading MPEG audio from Amazon, from my experience, is just enough to bring my system right to its knees. That system is obviously NOT designed to be used via a 33.6 baseband modem! ;o)

Some of us "older" types still buy records, when I get a deal and want to fill in holes in the collection. And I still buy CD's, of course.

I download only when someone gives me an ITUNES gift card. And even then, it takes me forever to use it up.

I just am not as happy with the sound quality on downloads. Even CD's are better, to me.

I am gradually converting my records (33s, 45s & 78s) and tapes to mp3 format and storing them on iTunes. The only song I have ever purchased from iTunes is "Only in America" by the Drifters. After they recorded it, they didn't want to release it because they didn't believe that a black person could become president. Granted, that was about 45 years ago.

I have a recorder through which I can download my tapes and records onto my ipod. It works real well and beats changing tapes every hour in my car. One thing I have noticed is that CDs with MPEG will work on a car radio but you can transfer other formats onto that. You save Ipod space that way.

I also miss the Stoner's radio show. I wonder if someday the internet could have it.

I to have transfered most of all my reel to reels, albums and tapes from 30 years to mp3 format and onto itunes. Currently I have 56,345 songs on hard drive. I also have them backed up on two different storage hard drives (320 gigs each) just in case.

Maybe you didn't let the vacuum tubes warm up long enough. It takes about 20 minutes before they are up to optimum performance. ;-)

That sure beats my 9 thousand songs. I have downloaded enough tunes to keep me company for a month at a time. The rest of the time the internet keeps me company.

I happened upon this thread while listening to a very worn vinyl copy of "Belafonte on Campus" (no date given, circa 1967 I think). It's a wonderful record, one I've never seen on CD. I'd estimate I have about 500-550 LPs, mostly classic rock and R&B/soul, down from about 700 two decades ago (I sold/gave away a bunch I knew I'd never play again just before moving to Portland). I don't buy them anymore as a rule, and have never gotten into downloads though I do buy a few CDs per year. Recently I did stumble across "The KGON Album," a promotional LP of local bands (none of which I recognize) dated 1980. It lists the "KGON Earforce" as Iris Harrison, Dave Shult, Marty Party, Robin Banks, Barbara Cook, Steve Rodin, Dick Sheetz, Gloria Johnson, George Bier and Bob Schmidt. Scrawled on the insert in felt-tip marker are the words "Robin Banks sez thanks for stopping by!"

Warner, I do not give you permission to refer to yourself as "older" since I was born before you were and I'm just not ready for that yet! To paraphrase Mary Martin after Larry Hagman's comment about being the biggest star to come from the state of Texas, "not as long as I'm still alive"! :-)

Stoner- I may have missed something, but are you the blogger/author on Stumptownblogger.com? Cuz I've had that bookmarked for quite awhile. I really enjoy the historical PDX stuff, and the references to businesses past, etc.

So if it's you, congrats!

The farrells post is up....By the way..had a long conversation with Bobby Ocean today on the phone. He should write a book on his days at the Big 610 and KHJ. What a story teller! A 5 min call led to a an hour quick.

I wouldn't. He tried to kill Pioneer Square. KGW is broadcasting there now. I've a hunch they'd never put a booth in a parking garage.

Skeptical..

Pioneer Courthouse Square is the core of downtown..Anytime we have an out of town guest it is where I take them (along with Pittock Mansion view) ..Frank was on the wrong side on that issue and we sure don't need another parking structure downtown.....

It was "Whiz Burger"
On Powell and 15th and on Broadway & Grand.
Best cheap burger around. Better than McD's at the time. May as well have gone there anyway because you would have to wait for the train to finish crossing Powell anyway.

On April 7, 2009 @ 10:29 PM, "Randy_in_eugene" took to his keyboard and hammered out the following thought:
"Maybe you didn't let the vacuum tubes warm up long enough. It takes about 20 minutes before they are up to optimum performance. ;-)"

Considering how old my modem is, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. ;o)

That was a cool photo of him. I have a few of the Obrienizers he did from when he was in town for the 1988 reunion. he was fun to listen to.
I used to go to Farrells all the time with my church group. The last I heard it changed owners. Someone told me the previous owner was a Christian.
