Can't agree with Taco's "Puttin' On The Ritz"... A very interesting and different take on a 1930's Irving Berlin tune.

Other ones? Fine, I guess... Don't really know 'em.

"Run Joey Run" by David Geddes

Daddy please don't, it wasn't his fault, he means so much to me
Daddy please don't, we're gonna get married...just you wait and see.

She called me up, late last night, she said Joe, don't come over
My dad and I just had a fight, and he stormed out the door
I've never seen him act his this way, my God, hes going crazy
He says he's gonna make you pay, for what we've done, he's got a gun, so

Run Joey Run Joey Run
Daddy please don't, it wasn't his fault, he means so much to me
Daddy please don't, we're gonna get married...just you wait and see.

I got in my car and I drove like mad, till I reached Julie's place
She ran to me, with tears in her eyes, and bruises on her face
All at once, I saw him there, sneaking up behind me, WATCH OUT!
Then Julie yelled, he's got a gun, and she stepped in front of me
Suddenly, a shot rang out, and I saw Julie falling
I ran to her, I held her close, when I looked down, my hands were red,
and heres the last words Julie said...

Daddy please don't, it wasn't his fault, he means so much to me
Daddy please don't, we're gonna get married.....aaahhh..ahhhh
ahhhh....ahhhhh

Run Joey run Joey run Joey run Joey run Joey run

> Aw Steve, what's wrong with a good canibal song once every 40 years or so?

That song was pure genius on the part of Rupert Holmes, who came up with the idea of releasing a song about controversial subject to generate a buzz.

Sheena Easton had a number of hits in the 1980s. What I like about "Morning Train" is that it sounds so dated today, when dual-income couples have been the norm for a number of years. When I think about the lyrics, I am in awe regarding how this element of our society has changed so drastically since the early 1980s.

Another dated Sheena Easton hit was "Telefone." This is a song that compares relationship frustration to the frustration encountered when calling someone on the phone and the phone never being picked up. Young whippersnappers would have a hard time relating to the 1983 world of "Telefone," where there was no voicemail, few people had answering machines, and only the extremely wealthy could take phone calls in their cars.

Taco put out an entire album of songs in the same style as "Puttin' On the Ritz." I like "Puttin' On the Ritz," but that sound gets old, in my opinion, after hearing several similar-sounding songs.

The Buoys were a one hit wonder band.

David Geddes was a two-hit wonder. Who can forget his equally bad follow-up to "Run Joey Run", "The Last Game Of The Season (Blind Man In The Bleachers")

Even though nobody besides young girls seemed to like them, Hanson had a couple of top 10 & a total of four top 40 hits.

I'm probably alone here, but I think that most one hit wonder songs, especially from the 1960's-1980's, are so bad that they're good.

I don't think I'm alone in listing "Feelings" & "You Light Up My Life" as two of the worst One Hit Wonders of all-time. I was also never a big fan of "Pilot Of The Airwaves" & "Nothing Compares To U"

Here's a fun site to check out for a bunch of one hit wonder info:

http://www.onehitwondercentral.com/index.cfm

Except for listing Blue Swede as a one hit wonder band, it couldn't find any glaring mistakes.

Ugh!!

And Hanson just sucks across the board. Who signed those guys? EPIC FAIL

It seems that every once in a while, a youth novelty act like Hanson comes along, has a hit, and vanishes. Likely, somebody at the record company got the idea that tweeners would really go for artists who are roughly the same age as they are. That person was right.

from wiki:

Holmes, with D. Jordan, wrote a less-successful hit for them [The Bouys]titled "Give Up Your Guns", an epic narrative dealing with an escaped bank robber. Much more serious in tone than their previous hit [Timothy], "Give Up Your Guns" reached only #84. By contrast it was a massive hit twice in mainland Europe, when originally released, and when re-released in 1979.

Did KISN or KGW ever play that follow up?

One hit wonders are generally considered acts that had only one song to ever hit the Top 40, not Hot 100.

Interestingly, the definition of a "one-hit wonder" has changed over the years: I'm thinking it used to be that an artist would record a song that was a big hit and they were never heard from again, no album, nothing! Now, if you only made the top 10 once, you're a one-hit wonder. You've probably heard of Spanky and Our Gang. Under this scenario, they're a "NO hit wonder" because they never made the top 10! Oh shucks! I hate to say anything without being absolutely sure so I looked it up and "Sunday Will Never Be the Same" peaked at #9 but you get the idea. Their best known song, "I'd Like To Get To Know You", used for years in a bank commercial, only made it to #17. In conclusion, to Buns of Steel, I'd like to say that I am not Rack Me! Everyone knows I'm Marconi. :-)

Timothy "Buoys" #17 in '71. Fun, uptempo pop tune about cannibalism.

This past weekend while waiting at a car dealership I heard on their piped-in music system, Peter McCann's 1977 hit "Do You Wannna Make Love" (or do you just wanna fool around).

Why, I'm not sure.

Since the shift from a focus on singles to a focus on albums in the late 1960s, it seems that there were no artists who released one single and then disappeared. I believe that Littlesongs and possibly a few others on this board may have the recording industry experience required to explain why this is the case. To folks with such experience, I pose the question: do virtually all record industry contracts with artists require those artists to record some minimum number of songs that is large enough to produce at least one album? If so, when did this become standard in recording industry contracts?

I would also like to nominate another song to the one-hit-wonder hall of infamy: "I Don't Like Mondays" by The Boomtown Rats. The song's controversial subject matter, a school shooting, simultaneously caused it to gain notoriety and stunted its success on the charts, as many radio stations refused to play it. Although I tend to like dark songs about deep or controversial subjects, I think the lyrics could be greatly improved, and the overall execution (no pun intended) of the song and its music video have a campy, somewhat amateurish quality about them.

"Why, I'm not sure."

I think it's because one of the main goals of the retail music services is to play as many songs as possible in order to avoid repetition, which drives the retail people wack-0. So, for them, playing a minor or non-hit is cool.

A lawsuit was, indeed, filed by Mattel for trademark infringement. The court eventually dismissed the suit, in 2002.

I heard "the Sign" by Ace of Base today on the radio... gag I know they had two hits but really who cares.

Also:

"Groove is in the Heart" by Dee-Lite
"I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred
"I Touch Myself" by the Divynls
"Rock Me Amadeus" by Falco
"American Pie" by Don MacClean
"The Bad Touch" by the Bloodhound Gang (although one of their other songs is quite funny but as parody goes it's only funny the first time you hear it.)
"Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice

It's late that's all I could think of.

Now that you mention it, Semoochie, I think it did sound like them. Lucky for them that they had a few other songs out. Like I said, it wasn't good, even though it was in the background from down the hall.
