This may be the zaniest question in the history of PDX Radio (other than the "what yall tink bout dat" variety), but I'll ask anyhow.

The question I have has to do with the fact that I still use the printed phone book... specifically, the former USWest/Qwest "Dex" variety (now published by another publisher). I faithfully recycle the old editions every year (and anything else that comes my way as soon as it hits the doorstep). The most recent one I have says "Use through November 2008." So, does anyone know if they've received any since about 2007 or so?
I realize that some of you might say that I should just look online, however: 1) I have dial-up; 2) going online just to find a phone number and/or an address (another useful purpose for the phone book) is cumbersome, bloated and slow; 3) what am I supposed to do when the power is out?

Phone books show up at my doorstep on a fairly regular basis. In front of me now is the Greater Westside Dex, which says "use through February 2009." I guess that after February, this phone book won't work anymore due to the transition to digital. (bada-boom)

Check and see if you can get a CD version of the phone book instead of the printed one. I think you can order one online. Then you just look it up off of the CD on the ol' puter.

Just over 2 weeks ago I received the Dex Yellow Pages good through December 2009. Although, you made me realize, I haven't received a White Pages in years.

Try calling 1-877-2-GET-DEX and see if you can get the CD-ROM version.

Do they even still do a White Pages phone book any more? In all honesty, I haven't seen one myself since the U.S. West days.......

(Ahhh, memories....... ;o)

Well, probably not in the PDX metro area but Eugene/Springfield still has a combined white-yellow pages book by Qworst...

Yes, they do. Years and years ago, family moved outside of Portland proper and called the phone company (which at the time published the phone book), where they said that unless someone lived in Portland-proper, the Portland White Pages was not automatically delivered, and anyone requesting one outside Portland (even if they were in, say Gresham or Beaverton and lived right on the other side of the border), even if they were a residence, would need to pay full price to receive one. This could've changed now, I don't know.

I'm going to guess it could be the weather, maybe they'll get here eventually. I'm aware of the phone number, but it's a last resort of sorts. I figure I know someone who received them and is going to recycle them and/or won't use them, maybe I'll be able to get one from them if they're not going to use them.

As for the suggestions that I should order the CD... in my original post I said I have use for, and want, the printed edition.

First the computer called me and asked if I'd received the new Dex book. I pushed 2 for no. Then a live human called a few days later and asked the same thing, I said "no."

So far, no book has arrived. I should call but I use it so little anymore these days. Just google it. Besides, a one year old phone book is still mostly valid.

For people, use zabasearch.com They've got every white pages every published in their database, at least it seems that way.

I still get both the yellow and white pages--from several different sources--delivered to me on a regular basis. I am in Hillsboro; perhaps other parts of the city are different in this regard. Note that despite the phone books being the official current versions, not all of the listings are necessarily up to date.

White pages are not very good with everyone using cell phones or VOIP and they do not actually have a hard wired house phone.

[OK fine, be that way then!]
It's quite alright. The CD is probably a valid alternative to some, as is the downloadable directories they also have. Me, it's nice to have something where I don't have to have my computer on and/or wait for it to start up, and/or navigate a web site just to get a phone number and/or address.

And, yes I was listening to KPAM this afternoon and heard on the news that the new phone books are about to be delivered. So I might have just been antsy and a little impatient after all!

Call me a luddite or an old fuddy-duddy, but you can still find my name in the White Pages! :-)
