I've a good friend coming to town. We are thinking of taking a night or two and seeing some live shows. Life troubles have kept me out of the scene for long enough, I think it's worth asking what's hot right now? Think KNRK type alternative, if a bit more edgy! The other person is bringing his 20 something son and a friend as well. Thanks!

Ironically, three of these shows are tributes to other bands, but here are a few fun suggestions: 12/18 -- The Honus Huffhines & Metropolitan Farms at the Twilight, 1420 SE Powell. Free admission, but 21+ only. 12/19 -- KMRIA* (a regional holiday supergroup) will be doing their annual Pogues tribute at Dante's, 1 SW 3rd Ave. $12 advance, $15 day of show and 21+ only. 12/19 -- The Nowhere Band (another local supergroup with a huge circus cast) will perform all of The Beatles, "White Album" -- almost exactly 40 years later -- at Bossanova, 722 E Burnside. $22 advance, $27 day of show and all ages. 12/20 -- The Portland School of Rock will showcase kids performing the music of Aerosmith at Berbati's Pan, 231 SW Ankeny. $10 advance, $12 day of show and 21+ only. *Kiss My Royal Irish Arse

You should take them to Doug Fir for sure. It's where the hipsters go, but aside from that, the sound is really good.

I agree that Doug Fir has a lame crowd, bad eats and annoying staff, but good acts are featured fairly often. Depending on the night, you might be the only ones listening to the band over the yapping horde. It is hard to go wrong with an evening at White Eagle or Laurelthirst.

Unless the layout has changed, one literally had to "cross the stage" to get to the potty at the White Eagle. I wonder how many people just pee'd their pants instead of having to share the spotlight with the band?

Way back in the steam powered railroad days, the volume of customers at the White Eagle was staggering. So, the proprietors became creative in their approach to bathroom facilities. To save time, you could enjoy a quick sandwich and suds, and in the same moment, pee standing at the bar into a little gutter on the floor. It was filled in with concrete years ago, but you can still see the outline.

Hence the name "white eagle disease" to describe patrons showing up at the UO medical school with heptitis.
