On the Kink website Les has a moving story of his battle with lung cancer that has now spread. He is a Portland radio legend and a very nice person to say the least. Lets all wish him the best.

I'm really sorry to hear about this. Les has been a consummate professional with his radio work on KINK. Always well prepared, keeping things moving and topical when he anchored the morning show (and lately afternoons). He's a real treasure to the Portland broadcast community.

The description of how this cancer likely started is kind of scary because it sounds as if it could happen to anybody. According to the blog, the cancer likely started as a sore on the surface of the skin, 20 to 30 years ago, and it then burrowed into Les's chest, ending up in one of the lungs.

Wow...

Okay...when was the last time YOU had a checkup with your doctor? Have you been observant of any changes? Or are you in denial?

I know...I don't like going to the doctor either, unless I'm actually sick. Let this be a clarion call for all of us... My mom is a cancer survivor, twice...and she's now 81. But it wasn't this kind of cancer Les is dealing with...this one is so insidious...

Les, know that a prayer is being lifted up for you and your family from the Arizona desert...You are as much a part of Portland as any landmark or treasure in the Northwest. With the love and support of your family, many good friends on and off the radio, and your faith, you have all the bases covered. May God richly bless you...

Amen Indeed!! I have been associated with Relay For Life for 18 years and early detection is the answer and the key for many survivors. I chair the Eugene/Springfield Relay, and started the Relay in Florence, Oregon. I started in Seattle and in Tacoma the home of the Relay. I urge anyone to find out more by visiting www.cancer.org or by joining the fight themselves by organizing teams and becoming part of the solution.

I second that. I have battled cancer personally and have lost my father to prostate cancer and that hits me home. I sure will pray that God will help Les beat this because people have done so.

Just a little bump for my old colleague and friend, Mr. Leslie Sarnoff. We really go back a long way, as in first working together at KGON in 1975! We surely went off onto some divergent paths and into some fascinating and fun adventures, maybe a few MISadventures, from that point forward, but it was all good, or turned out that way.

It was always a pleasure and an honor and -- above all else -- FUN to be part of any team in which you were involved. Oh, the times we had.

I've never seen anyone work harder or be more devoted to putting on a good radio show, day in, day out. You did everything you could to make that morning show shine, and, truly, it paid off. You and Rebecca were one of the all-time great duos of PDX morning shows. Trying to fill your shoes during vacation periods as I did back in the '80s and '90s was daunting to say the least. At least Rebecca held my hand.

People: Les really was there every morning (or night, I should say), show-prepping and getting the gig together. He made the rest of us look bad. I'll never forgive you for that, making the rest of us have to work. ;)

Seriously, dude, Portland radio needs you in the PM drive-time; there aren't that many of the real guys, the good old good ones around anymore. As I think I told you once, I wanted to be the Barney Keep of PDX afternoon radio; this is now your mission. I need you to carry on for me, for all of us. Get in there.

Do what your doctors tell you...explore all avenues and possibilities of recovery...and, more than anything else, don't let the weasels grind you down or let any bad feelings or negativity creep in. BE POSITIVE. You can fight this and you can win.

My mother had a very virulent form of breast cancer 30 years ago. But through her faith, the support/love of family, friends, even strangers, and good doctoring -- even way back then some remarkable advances had been made -- she made it through it. And my dear mother is still around.

And you've got your fans (of which you have more than you can possibly conceive), and they're all pulling for you. So am I.
