I used to be fairly in-the-know when it came to who is who in the Hip Hop world. But last night reminded me that that is no longer true.

I don't feel like just because something is new causes me to pull the " old man " out and go " in MY day, we had Funky Cold Medina...now THAT was music." I knew back then that it barely qualified as music - but at least I could follow it. Kind of.

Then last night, while watching Saturday Night Live, the musical guest was Ludacris featuring T Pain. Now Ludacris I've been able to assign some credibility to. Decent production. Some street cred. Etc.

But T Pain, while I understand that he is popular, I cannot figure out where the heirarchy lies within in Hip Hop anymore. I mean, is T Pain considered good? As in " well respected " or something? I have no way to gauge if he holds the same position as say, Tone Loc or Public Enemy or Beastie Boys or Usher or Sir Mix A Lot or what?

I do know that his performance last made me laugh VERY hard at how ridiculous he looked and acted and " sang." He reminded me more of Cher than anything.

And really, I'm kinda ok with not knowing. But it's been a while since I've had to wonder.

I think that is a good measure for ineptness for any artist in any genre of any era.

Its one thing to not understand or not "get it", but to laugh, heh, that's really speaking the truth. I can't think of an artist we might have laughed at when he/she appeared on the scene but later soared in popularity.
