This from All Access:

------------------East Coast Station, West Coast Calls------------------

FCC records confirm that the Commission did, indeed, assign a set of call letters beginning with "K" to a station east of the MISSISSIPPI -- well east -- on NOVEMBER 11th, allowing COMMUNITY BIBLE CHURCH's new noncommercial shared-time FM in NAPEAGUE, LONG ISLAND, NY to carry the calls KCBE.

KCBE will be broadcasting from 7p to 10a weekdays and all day SUNDAYS, sharing time and an antenna with HAMPTONS COMMUNITY RADIO's WEER.

This appears to be true:

But very strange ! ... WCBE was already assigned in Columbus OH, any idea how they were able to get the "K" call?

I thought I remembered reading about fifteen years ago in a non-trade publication that the FCC loosened all those old first call letter restrictions...and that even "N" could be used. I expected to see geographically nontraditional calls soon after but never did....

There was a thread about "N" call letters several years ago, and what might go first if they could be used for call letters.

Here's some more. Yes, I did run out of ideas while creating the list:
NEWS - self-explanatory
NRON - this would be sort of a joke
NRA* - All 26 stations (NRAA, NRAB, NRAC, etc.) would be members of the new "National Rifle Association Radio Network."
NUTS - walnuts, pecans, cashews, and peanuts!
NSTY - "Nasty"
NROP - Same idea as "KCUF."

In the mid-1980s an application was made for a shortwave station in Alabama with the call letters NDXE (in dixie). The CP was granted, but not the call letters, which was argued over for a few years.

These 3 probably have their studios and offices across the Mississippi River in St. Louis, MO.

That would be my guess anyway!

Yes, there are a number of K stations in the east, but weren't those all established before the "Mississippi" rules. If you check around the midwest like Dallas or Minneapolis, there are a few W calls west of the Mississippi.

One of them wasn't quite so far east. KYW used to be in Chicago and Cleveland.
