This from All Access:

---------------Man Takes Over U.K. Station, Swears On Air---------------
A man brooke into the studio of GLOBAL RADIO Dance GALAXY/BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND early MONDAY and managed to get on the air and broadcast a profane rant.

Police arrested the man at the scene at about 5a, and the station temporarily switched to a simulcast of sister GALAXY/YORKSHIRE.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s Eugene's KATR, which was located near the University of Oregon, had a special cutoff switch hidden under the console in case a group of "radicals" ever tried to take over the station. It was wired so VU meters would move and other on-air indicators were seemingly in place, but no audio to the transmitter. I don't think any situation ever arose where the switch was needed.

But randy--was there ever a time when the switch was accidently bumped, and the station went off the air. I remember a friend at the time who was a d.j. at katr.

I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised. A former KATR employee whose air name was Michael Ray told me the story. (Not the same Michael Ray who was on KISN.)

my next newscast.Unfortunately it was a short song and when Jeff hit the news sounder, I was 2 hallways away. Wow.. Lesson Learned!

As I remember, KATR was interestingly located between a waterbed store and Planned Parenthood. Was that 13th?

KCYX's Tom Shannon, on the air 10am-3pm, fell asleep on the board during a re-mote with PD Mike Kolb. Tom had moved his family to another apartment overnight and was also the morning paper boy! Well it was all to much for Tom. Mike was stuck having to continue to talk with no way out. Mike told me about this and he probably remembers more.

Craig had it right and that's about the long and short of it. I was on a remote from some godforsaken car-parts store in downtown McMinnville. After the usual plea to "come on down and say howdy", I threw it back to Tom in the studio... and was greeted with a loud snore! He'd left the mic on for quick kibitzing, but then fell asleep, face down on the board.

Someone in the station heard the snoring on the monitor and arrived for a reasonably quick rescue, although it seemed like forever at the time. But it WAS live, local and human radio... and that makes it priceless in my memory.
