ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens has lost his bid for a seventh term. The longest-serving Republican in the history of the Senate trailed Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich by 3,724 votes after Tuesday's count. That's an insurmountable lead with only about 2,500 overseas ballots left to be counted.

Stevens, who turned 85 Tuesday, also revealed that he will not ask President George W. Bush to give him a pardon for his seven felony convictions.

Do you think Alaskans will rename the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport now?

Good riddance. It's appalling that it was even close. Goes to show what kind of people live in Alaska.

I was thinking earlier today...
It's no wonder people here hate it when I mention third parties, since quite a bit of the country is figuring out there's more than one party.

This also removes the possibility of Sarah Palin taking Stevens' seat in the Senate. :-)

Again, complaining about the lack third parties is the favorite pastime of people who want third parties. The reason third parties don't exist is because the complainers don't get off their butts and go out and actively organize third parties.

Why else don't competitive third parties exist?

They don't appear out of the blue just because you don't like the two major candidates. Hard work and time is involve and CLEARLY the complainers aren't up to it.

Yeah, she'll have to do it the hard way now -- running for the office. I wonder if Alaska's other senate seat expires in 2010? If not, she'll have no chance before the 2012 elections. This is good news for intelligent people everywhere.

It still stuns me how close the election was. Conservatives will tell you about law and order and how they will vote for someone who believes in it, yet vote for a known and convicted felon. You know I use to respect Alaskans. Of course that was before I got to know their senator and governor and how they rally around both, gotta love them.

Hmmmmm. How easily the liberals forget about Marion Berry.

From Wikipedia; ...He was the target of a high-profile 1990 arrest on drug charges, which precluded him from seeking reelection that year. After he was convicted of the charges, Barry served six months in prison, but was elected to the D.C. city council in 1992 and ultimately returned to the mayoralty in 1994, serving from 1995 to 1999. Today, Barry again serves on the city council, representing Ward 8, which comprises Anacostia, Congress Heights, Washington Highlands and other neighborhoods.

And the MORONS re-elected him. WTF???

But he is a Democrat and we all know Democrats NEVER do anything wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I think Stevens should do jail time for his crimes. Just like ANY person convicted of a felony should.

It just gets so sickening to see passes given to Democrats but any time a Republican even picks his nose it is a national disaster to most on this board.

I'm beginning to think Herb had a good idea by dumping out of here.

Herb pussied out because he could no longer stand on what he said. I say good riddance. Not because of his conservative stances, but because everything for him revolved around god and the fact that he had the "truth" and no one else did. It's because of people like Herb that we saw the results we saw earlier this month. People have had enough of the crap he pushed and pushed back.

The fact that Herb openly refused to go to any face-to-face meeting of the participants of this board and was even unwilling to pay a visit to his beloved KLYC spoke volumes to me. This guy didn't just refuse to participate in social events; he actually said that he wouldn't do it, in much the same way that Amy Winehouse said that she wouldn't "go go go" to rehab!
