I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet! It was on at least in time for John Tesh. While typing this, I hear a promo about a "Christmas Sampler Weekend" so I guess they aren't into it "full swing" just yet.

National is different then the local shows eh-oh... I agree a full package would be ideal in radio and entertainment 1-2-3-ann-4 but personaly I heard a local sweeper a week before the Halloween treats where given out... I will say too all Early Christmas stations, not in "Christmas" events in town promotion department/web wise but audio wise... Please make it feel like Christmas and the package you make for Jan 1st an event with thanksgiving and corps ideals: LOVE THE WORKS and Lots of Christmas Hugs...

When I was in high school, some friends and I used to play a little "game" in the computer lab (if you can logically call it a game) wherein we'd feed a passage of text into a search engine's translator function--the "latest thing" at that time--and translate it into at least two foreign languages before telling it to translate back to English, trying to obtain the weirdest translation we gould get. My personal favourite programme for this was Alta-Vista's "Babel Fish" programme.

For example, if I was to feed it, say, the preamble to the Constitution~


quote:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.




and use the combination
English to Dutch
Dutch to French
French to English
in that order, it yields the following passage as its output~

Inact a law that says Christmas music should be from the 22nd of Dec. to midnight Dec. 25th. It's really grating after the last 4 years hearing the same 10 songs remade by 200 different people. UGH!

Maybe a lot of people don't like it, but a lot of people tune in, hence the reason so many stations do Xmas formats. I say if you don't like it, don't tune in. Personally, I think that's what HD and online channels are for. The main channels shouldn't be used for this kind of thing.

I truly believe a lot of people who complain are also listening.

So many stations do Xmas formats.

It gets people in the Christmas mood and it's easy programing for businesses. Businesses will do anything to drive sales this time of year. 70% of most retails sales take place at Christmas time.

Wal-Mart beat everyone. The day after Halloween was all Christmas , over the PA on the floor in the air everywhere @ Wal Mart.

And what do I see at Wal Mart now. A lot of people like me buying staple foods, like beans, rice raw materials to cook food from scratch.

But the decorations are all up, and the Music is Happy Holiday !

Interpretation of Joe's post ( the best I can do)

John Tesh is syndicated and the Christmas sampler weekend liner is a local insertion.( stating the obvious here)

I agree that it would be best if Broadcast Radio was comprehensively locally originated and not heavily syndicated , but I heard a local Christmas Music promo 1 week before Halloween. ( (I think that Joe believes that big market stations flip their formats earlier )

I would say that all radio stations who would like to program Christmas Music must start their Holiday music in conjunction with local events that support a " Christmas feel"

Make your format flips to Christmas coincide with the traditional holiday feel of the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. ( Jan 1st is just a little late, but you have to do some interpretation here )

It appears that K103 is playing continuous Christmas music every weekend until they go to it fulltime around Thanksgiving. They apparently consider Friday to be part of the weekend.

When was the last time you heard the Australian Christmas song by Rolf Harris called "Six White Boomers"? This 1963 version was the most popular when it was released on Epic Records. The original recording from 1961 on 20th Fox Records featured a concertina instead of the horns which you hear.

Hey, I love the Christmas format on 103.3. I've had it on all morning.

Also, Comcast has a MUSIC CHOICE -- Holiday channel playing Christmas music. You have many other channels from which you may select if you are a Scrooge.

Wanna know a little secret? I play Christmas music in JULY WHEN IT'S HOT... HOT... HOT. It helps me to remember that the cool weather is right around the corner.

I totally agree, Ellen!

I would so much rather spend a little money at an antique store in St. Johns and have it stay in the local economy, than spend slightly less on E-bay and have that money vanish from the Oregon economy. We're in serious trouble, and spending money locally is one way we can help.

Here's a web site I found that tries to accomplish that. They have coupons and stuff for local businesses that are hoping against hope that you'll spend a buck with them, instead of flushing it down the Web.

It looks like the Fish has gone All Christmas. Both K-Hits and KUPL are All Christmas for this weekend. Everytime I flipped by a K-Love frequency, I heard Christmas music.

Did anyone mention K-Hits?

K-Love seemed to be all-Christmas on black Friday, but is back to their regular format with some Christmas mixed in.

"Hope" 107.9 in Albany is all-Christmas as are Eugene's 94.5 and 99.1.
