Pdx radio does not have any stations owned by Cumulus. I'd say that was pretty lean indeed.

It is happening all around the country at Cumulus stations. I just moved back here from Topeka, KS, and I still check the Topeka Capital-Journal website to see what's going on. As it turns out, the Cumulus knife slashed four popular DJs, including "Radio Rich (Bowers) and LouAnn," a long-time country & western morning team who'd been lured away from local another station (with much fanfare, too) just a few years ago. According to the C-J:

"...several Cumulus clusters have laid off staff members, including 16 on- and off-air personnel in Kansas City and six on-air staff members in Fayetteville, N.C., at the same time as the Topeka dismissals, which also included the local cluster's chief engineer, Lee Reisinger, and Bowers' son, Nick Bowers, who did weekend overnights at US103." (See http://www.cjonline.com/stories/102908/loc_349427279.shtml)

What I find more interesting/troubling is how they tied the can to the chief engineer. I suppose in this computerized age it's possible to remotely control equipment from anywhere in the USA, but at some point isn't firing the chief engineer penny-wise, pound-foolish?

That story mentions Cumulus is hiring replacements, no doubt for less $$$ than their predecessors. Radio Rich was adamant that he and LouAnn knew there were money problems and were willing to negotiate a deal for less money, but they were never given a chance to talk contract--they were simply cut loose.

SO I'm guessing Eugene has not had any layoffs due to economic slowdown. Thats a good thing, they are very lean to begin with.

All around the country Cumulus is cutting positions at stations, sometimes as many as nine at a time. I very surprised they did not start with smaller markets and work thier up.

Eugene is probably one of Cumulus' larger markets.

San Francisco, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Nashville, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City are all Cumulus markets. Eugene isn't even close.

Eugene is and always has been a small market to all in broadcasting. From R&R, Arbitron and everyone else.
