Tim Hohl, normally Bob Miller's street reporter, has been in studio for at least a few weeks now. I haven't heard from Bill Gallagher for a while and thought he might be on vacation. I just checked the KPAM website, and Bill is nowhere to be found except in a archive page of his "NW Uncovered" vignettes: |

I'm puzzled why they chose to do this right before a major election instead of waiting a few weeks. Either the Pamplin empire is in desperate financial straits (unlikely, but possible) or else they've finally given up trying to compete with KEX/KXL and are getting ready to sell the station. |

Does anybody remember when KPAM 860 was Contemporary Christian? |
|
Author: Broadway Friday, October 24, 2008 - 1:11 pm |

Yes...1997 to 2000ish when it switched to current News Talk...at the time there was no Christian music format in PDX accept scattered fm satellators around metro but music on AM still did not garner the ratings needed. |

How many right wing stations can a liberal town like Portland support? KXL serves the right. Bill O'Reilly is the King of the Sheep. KPAM and KTRO have no shot at all. Big waste of time and money. |

I know many of you will disagree with me on this, but I thought boc was the best personality I ever heard in portland. He used to go out on the street and get homeless people to come on as guests. It was great radio. He was conservative, but he was fair to all sides. There is nothing like him on the air now, liberal or conservative, I was really sad to see him go. |

I just checked Victor Boc's website, www.victorboc.com, and it is still functional. Apparently, he has more irons in the fire than we would normally think of. |

KPAM is going up for sale. The proceeds will then be sunk into the Portland Tribune. |

DaveM's first sentence is believable (I have no idea if it's true, but it's believable). The problem with the second is that there doesn't seem to be much of the Tribune left to sink anything into. I'd be very surprised if Pamplin were to suddenly double-down on it again, especially in this economic climate. |

Would their other station be for sale also? |

They kinda telegraphed that with the recent cuts, which help the '08 financials somewhat, but the due diligence will be brutal. The cash flow on this property must be 100% outward. Any buyer would have to be wary of a signal that doesn't cover the metro on night pattern, which eats into both drives in these northern latitudes. The planting of a Hannity flag in one of America's bluest states hasn't helped the numbers any, either. But maybe with some niche format, a bargain price, and a signal upgrade this could be attractive to some optimistic operator. We've already seen what a profligate spender can do; maybe it's time for a pragmatist. Sounds like the US government. |

Gotta admit, it is far easier to make a buck in destroying the environment than clean industries like mass media and entertainment. Maybe Pamplin will just sell it all and buy a few more excavators and dump trucks. |

They have a construction permit for 15kw at night. Since they don't have to move any of the towers, perhaps it won't take much time to get on the air with it, at least not the full 3 years! |

When I first moved to Portland in 2001, I liked listening to KPAM's programming. I liked that just about everything was local. And while I felt the station leaned a little right politically, I felt like both sides were represented. |
