For anyone who hasn't heard, Lee Chabre passed away this morning at 4:30 after a long battle with cancer. He was 63. KPNW did a nice audio tribute to Lee.

Ahhhh bummer... He put a LOT of faith in me when I was an intern there.

I remember playing a regular basketball game with some of the other employees & Barry Maguire from KDUK, and Lee tagged along once. For 58, that man could ball!

I'm sad to hear of his passing...

The KPNW site just added an audio tribute and a place to leave comments. While I never met him, and I believe I only talked with him on the phone once...its clear the impact he had on the station and on Eugene. I heard him for years when passing through the area and sometimes on the north end of Douglas County as well. You could hear the professionalism and caring in his voice. I hope some of you Eugene folks will post on the KPNW site..

How recently was he working? I know I heard him in late August.

I worked with Lee at KPNW. I will always remember his wry sense of humor. he was interested in politics and the BSU Broncos. I'm sure he was happy the Broncos finally gained great success. He loved sports. He was a great workmate and friend. I shall miss him.

Lee was a great radio man. A dogged, hang in there kind of guy, who was loyal to all around him. A pleasure to have known him.

The passing of Lee Chabre is not just the passing of a man, but that of a friend and mentor. Lee gave me my first real break in radio and allowed me to be myself (not always a comfortable thing on the air) and grow as a talent.
Lee was the fairest man I've ever known, generous with his time and knowledge; he was decisive and sure and had the gravity that comes with those qualities. You knew that if Lee Chabre said something, that that something was the truth.
Lee will be missed not only as the voice of KPNW and a leader in N.W. radio, but as a friend; someone who would take a chance on an acerbic guy from New York and give him the freedom of the airwaves.
Lee has made an indelible mark on all who knew and heard him; we have lost much.
But we have been given much in return. I hope that all of us will continue to live up to the high standards that Lee set for us.
From back in the KPNW FM days (before my time) and on through the last time he keyed the mic, Lee Chabre was a professional and a talent, a friend and example.
Right now, as you read this Lee's broadcasts are thrown out toward the stars, passing among the planets to seek the ultimate truth.
God speed Lee, and thank you for all that you've shown and Given me.
