I needed a local connection and this seemed to be the best way: CBS is blowing up KFRC(FM) San Francisco and replacing it with a simulcast of KCBS! This is getting interesting.

This "news/talk to FM" trend is starting to really catch on. I would expect to hear a good number more into 2009. There is some speculation that Citadel might put WLS 890 Chicago on WLS-FM, although WLS-FM's ratings have spiked recently. KIRO-AM in Seattle has already put their programming on 97.3.

Who, if anyone, might try it in Portland?

Rose City should put KXL's News/Talk on 95.5, while moving Sports programming over to the AM.

KEX-FM anyone? The last time those calls were used was on 92.3kHz.

Since KEX is doing so well, why mess with it?

An email from Ben Fong-Torres with more details about the KFRC flip is posted at the Bay Area Radio Digest.

As we've established before regarding a KEX migration to FM, all of CC's FMs except for the mediocre-signaled 105.9 are successful in their present formats. However, things could turn around quickly in Double Jeopardy if either CC or Rose City were to buy any of the for-sale CBS properties.

I can't imagine any of the CBS Portland FM signals changing format anytime soon, although 106.7 and 107.5 do have a long history of flips.
