This from R&R:

------------------------It's A Christmas Miracle!-------------------------

We have a winner: It may not even be Halloween yet, but Bonneville has yanked the Giant Holiday Format Lever of Cheer at hot AC WMVN/St. Louis, which kicked off the all-Christmas rush last night at midnight. We'd been warned that WMVN, which is flipping from hot AC to sports/talk on Jan. 1, might be going all-Christmas at some point, but the weather outside isn't frightful yet -- actually, it's predicted to be in the 80s in St. Louis this weekend.

FYI:
The "delete" function still exists in this board if you desire to use it. Go to "edit profile" in the left column, sign in and delete (or edit). There is a time limit for these functions, however.

I know, and I do apologise.....unfortunately whenever I try to use it I inevitably end up being thrown into a "process loop" if you can call it that; specifically each time I try to use the "delete post" function it kicks me back to the main "edit profile" screen, instead of the "login to delete post" screen. Ultimately my post never really gets deleted, so I usually have to edit it down to something like "deleted", like I did above. It's just far less frustrating and painful (i.e. traumatic injury to forehead) to do it that way.

(FYI, I'm doing this all on a Win98 SE box, in Firefox 2.0.16. I think there must be something wrong with my software.....that, and I really do need to update my Firefox anyways......)

62--I don't think you can "un-delete" posts per se, at least not in Discusware.......however you *could* re-type your post that you deleted prior, but that's not technically *un-deleting*..... ;o)

I don't understand the logic behind running an extended Christmas music format, as WMVN is doing. Were the ratings on the Hot-AC format that bad?

Testing "delete" Win 98 FF 2.0.0.14"

Just tried it with my old 98 (not SE) box with Firefox 2.0.0.14 seems to work fine... my post (quoted above) from 7:32 pm appears to be gone.

I have an Avira anti-virus running on here too, and it has a "live scan" thing going as well (i.e. files are scanned immediately as they are coming in off the Internet or off a removable disk.)

I have had problems with Avira in other forums as well. On Muzak's forum, sometimes it would trigger an error condition where it would return an intercept message saying my post couldn't be sent. Specifically, I have Avira Antivirus Personal Free Edition 5.7--the last version [to my knowledge anyways] that runs on Win98. Yeah, I know it's old and really out of date........)

So I am going to disable that.......

Okay, that worked. It was my "live scan" thing (yet again) interfering with Discus. I had to completely restart my computer and re-connect to the Inet (33.6 modem; slow) in order for it to be completely disabled.

(Fortunately I am doing this all on a Pentium 4 so rebooting the system is rather quick.)

I put a post here saying I was going to delete it within a half-hour after I posted it.

So looks like that did it.

Next task on my agenda: find a free/openware anti-virus programme that's more reliable.........

.....and then I am going to delete this very post. If it's still here after a half-hour, that's a sign that it must be something else in my system."

Bingo... looks like it worked!

Yup. Forgot to mention in my post above that I also need to find a programme that's more *modern*.....

So anyhoo:
Last Wednesday at about 11:30, on Muzak's "Foreground Music One" satellite programme (Dennis had it turned on as I was coming home from work) I heard Donny Hathaway's song "This Christmas" playing on there. (Might have just been a mis-cue, that's been known to happen from time to time on Muzak's DBS programmes.) But my matter of fact response to Dennis about that was: "Muzak's playing Christmas music already? Has Hallowe'en even been here yet??" ;o)

Then again, I did hear Vince Guaraldi's song "Skating" on their "Expressions" programme (DiSH Net channel 925) in June, at Shari's......

(F.Y.I., that's the song you hear playing in the background of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" a couple of minutes into the programme, when Charlie's walking around before asking Lucy for psychiatric help.)

Boy, it just keeps coming earlier and earlier every year, I swear.......

They didn't mention that the jettisoned format was a Movin' clone. Previous blurbs on R&R did mention this.

This might be the year that the early all-xmas format falls flat on its face. This year all xmas all the time may serve as an unwelcome reminder that folks don't have enough money or enough confidence to do a lot of xmas shopping.

"Rockin' Around The Xmas Tree" and "Little St. Nick" may not be all that warmly received in an October (and November...and Dec.) when people are sweating groceries and current credit card bills, and start seeing their credit limits shrink and mortgages rise.

Outside of small businesses that start pounding the format early in a desparate attempt to pry dollars loose from economically maimed wallets, I don't see a big upside to the format this year.

If I were a betting woman (and we have repeatedly established that I am) I put what few sheckels I have left on 2008 being an historic low for the All-Xmas format.

Interesting perspective, I think that hard times increase the sales of "comfort food", booze and "retro" items that remind people of better times, and would have thought that holiday music might fit into the that category... guess we will see what happens.

Interesting indeed.

Given the state of things (tight), we are planning a low key holiday, spending our dollars on getting together and sharing time instead of buying lots of stuff.

We are going to buy almost nothing, but a few nice gifts that have sentimental value. Nothing high dollar, nothing stupid. Just simple, elegant, inexpensive things we all can appreciate.

I sure as heck don't want the "shit all the cash you can before the end of the sales quarter" pressure this year. Have had quite enough of a battle just dealing with everyday things.

Going to tune a lot of it out this time around.

Although it is getting more difficult with each passing year, I still refuse to do anything related to Christmas until after Thanksgiving. That includes shopping, listening to music looking at ads, etc. I don't want to see it hear it, period. I still retain my youth when the first we ever heard of Christmas was Friday after Thanksgiving when we would go downtown, watch the Santa Claus Parade and then go into Meier & Frank to the 10th floor to look at the toys (not to mention the window displays on the street), visit Santa, go across the street to Lipmans and see Cinnamon Bear and cross the street again to Woolworths for popcorn and other stuff. THAT was the start of the Christmas season. New Years Day was the day we took it all down and moved on. Holidays and seasons had definite start and end points you could depend on. They did not overlap.

That, and the good old days of live and local radio, are gone. Sad on both counts.

I think that the overall concept of extending the Christmas season is offensive simply because the purpose of doing so is to get people to shop more. No other holiday gets extended in this way. Having said that, it might be cool to have Independence Day extend from the summer solstice to July 4, if that could be used as an excuse to set off more fireworks, drink more beer, and eat more burgers and barbecue!!!

The Chinese are very adept at producing "shaped charges" for fireworks displays... when I start seeing Santa and Christmas trees in the sky on the 4th, I will know we have lost all sanity!

That's nothing!
My family traditionally started preparing for Christmas about a week before at the earliest. Christmas didn't start until arriving at church about 10:30-11 PM the night before, and ended on Epiphany.
And there are people out there that don't celebrate it, and don't like it to be called the 'holiday' season, either.

Yeah,

And just something anecdotal here, but I dont believe I am hearing as many car lot remotes as I did when I actually did them several years ago. Just punching about on Broadcast and listening at work in work vehicles that dont have Satellite. This has been going on for a few months now, as far as I can tell.

I went to a quick lube Monday that is part of a Toyota dealership here. They usually do quite well of course. Lot of people in the service area. Lots of trucks and cars sitting out in the lot with big prices on them and no body out there that I could see, even salespeople. Geez all their trucks are 38 to 42 grand sticker priced . Also , their vans ..geez louise..36 to 45 grand ! God !

Makes you wonder ?
