That's the question posed in an article from "The Times-Standard" in Eureka California, from last weekend:

"what if it keeps up the freefall???"

That's what I'm afraid of. Just heard a stock annalist say we're not at the bottom yet. He see's the bottom around 50 per cent of its value. What would that do to America? Would people take to the streets? Would we need troops to calm the masses?

I think it would do us all some good to get familiar with the current policies of our government.

Just eight days ago, members of our Congress were told that, "there would be martial law in America if they voted no" on the bailout bill. Congressman Brad Sherman brought up the subject on the floor of the House of Representatives.

Constitutional author Glenn Greenwald followed the latest developments in the homeland deployment last week in Salon.

Naomi Wolf is a widely celebrated author. The New York Times called her book, The Beauty Myth, one of the seventy most significant books of the century. Recently, she prepared a series of articles called, The Battle Plan, The Battle Plan II, and The Battle Plan III.

A former congressman, Dan Hamburg, made a dire prediction in the San Francisco Chronicle in February of 2008.

You may recall that in August 2007, our own Congressman Peter DeFazio, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, was barred along with the rest of the committee from reviewing parts of National Security Presidential Directive 51, the White House secret plans to implement "Continuity of Government" in the event of a mass terror attack or natural disaster.

The New York Times published the article, Making Martial Law Easier in February of 2007 about H.R. 5122, but specifically, Sec. 1076.

The Centre for Research on Globalization has published extensively on the topic including the April 2005 article, Is America Preparing for Martial Law?

From the Library of Congress, here is a taste of the 2005 Congressional Research Service report, Martial Law and National Emergency:

"Crises in public order, both real and potential, often evoke comments concerning a resort to martial law. While some ambiguity exists regarding the conditions of a martial law setting, such a prospect, nonetheless, is disturbing to many Americans who cherish their liberties, expect civilian law enforcement to prevail, and support civilian control of military authority. An overview of the concept of, exercise of, and authority underlying martial law is provided in this report, which will be updated as events warrant."
