Here's a little inside look at how Joe Biden is preparing for Thursday's debate with Sarah Palin:

I read in the New York Times that her debate prep sessions in New York and Philadelphia were so bad they sent her to one of McCain’s homes in Arizona for intense practice with two senior McCain aides. It’ll be interesting to see how things turn out.

You can't prepare someone so based in rhetoric to use selected facts and prepared answers when the questions are not revealed in advance. She, like I said last month, is toast against Biden.

What we are going to hear is a series of answers from her that are canned responses to other questions that appear to her, in her feeble mind, to be similar enough to segue her answer to. She will go down in flames although the media will not report it as such since they want to keep selling those GOP ads.

I've heard that when she was debating her opponent in her race for governor of Alaska, she would respond to questions by providing homespun anecdotes that sound warm and fuzzy but fail to answer the substance of the questions posed to her.

Amus: Yes. That's exactly what will happen. Biden has everything to lose and nothing to "win".

She, unless she really bites it, will come out fine no matter what she does.

Still, it will be great theater.

Given how poorly Dan Quayle did in the 1988 debate against Lloyd Bentsen, I think she would have to do exceptionally bad in order to lose her place on the ticket.

McCain is stuck with Palin. If he dumped her, he would be perceived as the biggest flip flopper in modern political history. At least McGovern could claim he wasn't aware of Eagleton's mental health issues in 1972. McCain had ample time to vet numerous veep candidates, and he went with someone who obviously had emotional appeal early on but is seriously lacking in the sort of experience to be vice president.

Have you seen the photo of Sarah Palin practicing for the debate? She is right next to Shit Creek without a paddle. It can be found in this segment from Countdown yesterday.

Also in that piece, Margaret Carlson braved a thunderstorm and chatted with Keith Olbermann about the Palin/Shovel ticket. The lightning made Margaret look even more like Velma Dinkley.

I posted this on the radio side but thought I'd add it to this thread since it's about the subject at hand:
_______________________________________________________________

First I want to state, yes I work for the same company that owns KCMD but after reading what's posted below by All Access about the debate, I Am Sold! I won't be on any channel but AM 970:

-------KCMD To Cover Veep Debate With Simultaneous Commentary-------

CBS RADIO Talk KCMD-A (AM 970, THE TALKER)/PORTLAND will cover THURSDAY's BIDEN-PALIN debate with live commentary during the event from PD/midday host RICK EMERSON and News Director TIM RILEY along with musician STORM LARGE. The three will riff on the debate while it happens.

"In a true example of multitasking, AM 970 will not only give you the debate, we'll simultaneously tell you what to think about it," said EMERSON. "After all, why wait a full 90 minutes to hear spin, ridicule, praise, and critique? STORM, TIM and I are excited to give this slice of information overload to a media-hungry world."

I think this is a great move by a really good guy; Rick Emerson. It's got shades of MST3K - which I know he appreciates and he can put his own spin on things that will be original and relatively even-handed.

I've always wanted him to be a LITTLE bit more known. I think this is a good way to do it. And while he does talk politics, in a very general way, I suspect he'll have done his prep work and will be able to send a few zingers and thoughts and even astute observations in a way that will be pretty damned fresh and original. My money is on the bet that there will be a few memorable moments - rehearsed, planned or otherwise - that will stick around for a while among the listeners.

This, for me, will be great to hear Emerson sorta spread his wings in an area that he usually treads relatively lightly. If Biden does something stupid, I expect Rick to call it out and unleash. If Palin says something dumb or whatever, I expect Emerson to have just as much fun with that too. But the cool part about Emerson is that he is able to recognize the moment. If someone makes a good point, he'll give credit where it's due.

Most of all, he'll have fun with it.

I will, of course, be playing my own Sarah Palin drinking game while I listen to the debate.

" Small town values " = 1/4 of glass homebrewed beer.

" Russia " = 1/2 beer with a Stoli chaser.

Any newly planted ability to reference an article that she " read " = Shot of Yukon Jack.

" Thanks, but no thanks " = Announce that I will not be drinking any more tonight. Then when no one's looking, take a shot of Wild Turkey anyway, then claim I never wanted it.*

Obviously avoiding pronouncing the name of a foreign leader by saying the name of the country instead = BIG pull off my tall Gin and Tonic with two limes.

Over-annunciate a leaders name, with dialect inflection and all = I crack open my collectable can of Billy Beer and pour a shot of Bushmill and toast George W Bush's legacy in action.

" McCain " = I eat a cracker.

" ...Obama doesn't understand..." = I eat a stale cracker.

" executive experience " = Jello Shot.

" woman " = Sex On The Beach

" Moose " = Full bottle of Alaskan Amber. ( I will not drink any Moosehead - no matter what ).

" Maverick " = Shot of Metamucil.

" Elitist " = Shot of Crown Royal.

Any pointing to the audience during applause = Two fingers of scotch.

" Wall Street / Main Street " = Full bottle of Fat Tire beer.

" 9/11 " = Sip of Mad Dog 20/20.

" eBay " = I sell my macrame owl beer cozy.

( * = not my idea. But too good to try and take credit ).

See you all in rehab...or on Fox 12. I'll be the guy asking Sarah Palin to marry me on live television. I think she might accept. Lord knows she puts out.

And During one of the 04 debates between Bush n Kerry there was speculation that W was wired with an earpiece. I see this being something that the McCain camp at least considered for tonight.

Fun aside, it was great to hear this debate. Refreshing to have an actual discussion and have my mind snapped back into place with some priorities; " Who will be a better President? " And each of them did the best they could. It wasn't anything special. But it's a good thing that makes America so great. Sincerely. It was even mildly healing for me.

Pretty fuckin' awesome.

Bottom line for the Republicans ... failure in this election.

It's becoming more apparent every day. McSame pulled out of Michigan. Critical swing states are either moving to Obama (meaning he's ahead by less than the margin of error) or solidly in Obama's column (meaning he's ahead by more than the margin of error).

The big question is the Senate. If the Democrats can only improve to 58 votes, the Republicans will still be able to block legislation from coming to a vote. This is the last real big question about this election.

Here's the thing folks, Palin if given time to prep is a good speaker BECAUSE she's a good politican. She was given time to prep for the debate and time to prep for her speech at the convention. Believe me, if given another one on one interview, she'll be just as bad.

New York - Several times during her exclusive interview with Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric asked Palin whether or not she was aware that the interviews were being taped, and that "other people would see them." Palin reportedly told Couric that she was indeed aware, but then asked Couric what she meant by "broadcast."

"I was concerned, after one of the times where she seemed to be answering a question I hadn't asked," Couric said. "It didn't seem possible that she would intentionally answer the question that way, knowing people would see it. So I stopped the interview, and I said, 'Governor, are you aware that this is the actual interview? What we're doing right now? That this isn't a rehearsal?' She said she was aware. And I said, 'Okay. Just so you know it's being recorded and parts of it will be broadcast.' And then she said, 'You can't blink, Katie, because we share a narrow maritime border with Russia and it has to be all about job creation.' I didn't understand it, but we just went on with the interview. I was pressed for time."

Ms. Couric said she became equally concerned during a session following a speech Governor Palin made, which preceded the second phase of the interview. Portions of that segment of Couric's interview aired tonight on CBS and have spread quickly on the internet.

"In one part of the interview, I asked her what newspapers and magazines she read before being asked to be John McCain's running mate," Couric said. "And she couldn't name any. So again, I turned to the crew and I said, 'Hold it, guys,' and I went to the Governor privately and said, 'Governor Palin, did you not understand the question? I'm asking you to name some newspapers or magazines you read. You can't come up with any? I'm just trying to make sure you're clear and to give you a fair shake here.' And she said, 'Okay. Nightline? Is that a magazine?' I said, 'No, that's a television show.' She said, 'What about Lou Dobbs? Isn't that a newspaper?' And I said, 'No, that's a man. Lou Dobbs is a man.' And there wasn't much more I could do. I'm not a miracle worker."

Gee...no wonder she found Couric "annoying".
