The Oregonian, June 16, 1947

"Behind The Mike" with William Oyes:

THIS IS F.M. WEEK
"June 15 thru 21 will be frequency modulation week and will be celebrated by Portland FM stations and KALE. A series of special programs has been planned both for people with standard sets and the estimated 6000 persons in the Portland area with FM sets.

KPFM has scheduled a special daily program from Monday through Saturday. They will carry a live broadcast from 2:00 to 2:15 P.M. featuring Leo Aquino accordionist from Canada who is now attending Jefferson High School.

From 3:00 to 3:15 P.M. they'll broadcast a program with Jacqueline Barney pianist from Hillsboro, who's a student at Pacific University.

From 4:00 to 4:15 P.M. Ray Mills tenor and student of music at Portland University will sing. From 1:45 to 2:00 P.M. the station will broadcast a series of sound effects, such as the actual sawing of wood, to prove the greater effectiveness of frequency modulation."

Portland FM Stations at the time were: KPFM 94.9mc & KGW-FM 95.3mc. KALE was in FM preparation and wanted to participate even though its FM station was a year away (KPOJ-FM).

Stan Goard, owner of KPFM was behind this recognition 100 per cent. In 1947 Stan had yet to file an AM application for what would become KPAM. His KPFM was a stand alone FM station, a big gamble at the time. It was later written in "Behind The Mike" that an FM Radio manufacturer (name not given) was behind all this.

The icing on the cake came when one of the broadcasters started running trains across our living rooms in AM/FM simulcast stereo.

Maybe KBOO could improve their ratings by broadcasting more local accordionists.

I once heard some industrial noise music that was kinda' like "the actual sawing of wood."

What was Portland University? Was it University of Portland or something else?

Did they play the song, "The Railroad Comes Through the Middle of the House?" :-)
