Bill Maher brought up a good point last night. He asked the question of how it would look if Obama's 17 year old black daughter was pregnant and not married. How would people react compared to Sarah Palin's daughter?

The conservative jesus freaks would be all over it.

I agree with Bill. If Michelle had as many children as Sarah -- even if none of them were unwed underage pregnant teens -- Barack would never have made it this far in politics. When a white woman and a white man make a bunch of babies, it is because they are Catholic, or pro-life, or fertile, or loving, etc. However, when a black family has three or more kids, it is explained in far less polite terms. In framing the large African-American family, references to race and stereotype far outweigh logic and reason or religious upbringing.

There is a double standard, but I am not gonna take the bait. We cannot make this a culture war between a small well-educated black family led by two dynamic intellectuals and a large white family led by a pair of sportsmen with less schooling and average or lower intelligence. As Bill Maher said in June of 2006, "I think the country is so off the track and that's now recognized by the vast majority of Americans. They probably, in the next election, will just take stock and say to themselves, "Last time we voted for the guy we wanted to have a beer with. That didn't work out so well."

I sure hope that he is right.

I'd much rather have coffee with the Obama family and see what books they recommend.

I'm quite sure the Democratic party will continue to work it's way into gaffes.

And it's not like there won't be Republicans still being Republicans either.

Maher has few worries.

OK, since you are asking for a racist stereotype to be described, here it is: A White, unwed, pregnant minor doesn't immediately evoke thoughts of somebody who is collecting welfare benefits. The Black minor in the same situation, on the other hand, immediately evokes an image of somebody who does.

If it were Obama's daughter that were pregnant, I am not 100% sure that critics would jump on race before political party or ideological affiliation. I could just as well imagine remarks like these:

"This shows that Democrats are morally weak."
"This is where being raised in a liberal environment will get you."

OK, maybe if the race and political affiliation were mixed, you might hear,

"This family illustrates the 'welfare state' mentality. They think it's just par for the course to let others clean up after your mistakes."
