Recently while hanging out on the coast at Coos Bay I hooked up a new HD radio (*) and DX'd three distant AM stations broadcasting in HD: KNX Los Angeles (AM 1070), KSL Salt Lake (1160) and KEX Portland (1190). The HD signal for each station would occasionally lock in, as the signal got up to three bars, to yield a bright and high quality stereo sound as if I were right in the studio. After hearing so many negatives about night time HD signals interfering with adjacent stations, I didn't detect much co-channel interference or splatter with my amateur ears from these three HD stations. It also may be due to no signal coming thru, for example, very strongly at 1060 or 1080. Unfortunately KGO is not broadcasting in HD. They have such a good west coast signal it would be a good test for HD dx'ing at night. Has anyone else noticed much adjacent channel interference from AM band HD stations at night? The HD quality of AM is incredible. Listening to Kim Mariner anchor on KNX in HD, I felt I was right there in L.A. * Sony XDR-F1HD, only $50 after rebate, see HD radio thread for more info. To find the HD radio thread: click "search" on the left, in "search for" put in "HD radio", for "look in" select "subject lines" and click "perform search".

I can only cite two specific examples of HD nighttime interference to adjacent frequencies: KNX causes problems when trying to receive CKMX (1060) and KFBK causes problems when trying to receive KGDD (1520) and KKAD (1550). The interference to KKAD is heard only if I am trying to receive the full "AMAX" bandwidth of that station's signal. KSL is too weak to cause very noticeable adjacent channel interference in my location. I have not had success with receiving HD signals by skywave from my location in Hillsboro. KNX and KFBK cause the radio to indicate that it is receiving a HD transmission, but the audio never switches out of analog mode. Even if I use a loop antenna to null out the local adjacent channel stations (1080 for KNX and 1520 for KFBK), I still cannot pull in the HD.

Dan, Alfredo-- I have heard KNX splattering onto CKMX occasionally (analog and IBAC, for that matter) but it seems to have gotten "worser" now that I am trying to DX CKMX from an apartment........ I haven't heard any IBAC noise splattering onto KKAD myself, but that could also be because I live in somewhat close proximity to the transmitters. If anything, KKAD's signal seems to splatter onto everything else!! ;o) I haven't been able to find the Sony receiver anywhere around PDX/Vancouver, and they seem to be impossible to find around here. The only lead I thought I might have had was at the Worst Buy on 164th, where the kid I talked to, upon mentioning "H.D. Radio" (much as I flat-out despise that term) thought I was referring to ATSC receivers and directed me to a shelf full of said convertor boxes. Sorry, but I don't think my government voucher cards would have covered an IBAC rig...... ;o) Do you know where I might have luck finding one locally (e.g. in a real store, not the Internet)?

Before HD broadcasting started at night, I would occasionally listen to the exotic sounds of "Radio Humsafar" on 1200 (KYAA Soquel CA). It is unlikely that I will hear that station again. When KGO was broadcasting HD at night, I got HD "locks" from a few seconds to a few minutes (from Hillsboro), but never constant HD reception. I demonstrated KGO HD to my wife one evening showing her how the noise disappeared when the HD locked in... "yes, but it sounds terrible!" was her comment. I enjoyed the lack of noise, she hated the artifacts.

Alfredo_t said: "I have not had success with receiving HD signals by skywave from my location in Hillsboro." Did you try an attenuator in the antenna line? My Sangean HDT-1 did much better with about 6 dB attenuation between it and my "longwire"... KUIK was overloading the AM band.

Right.....I had forgotten about Sony Only.......... Of course, having not been around the Glisan area for several years will eventually do that to ya......I need to go check them out sometime this week. Thanks Dan. So is the $50 rebate an "instant savings" thing (like Freddy's has on certain groceries occasionally) or a mail-in rebate?q

Tammy was not from a movie, it was a movie. I spawned several takeoffs. Debbie Reynolds was the star. Yes she is the mother of Carrie Fisher, the Star Wars Princess. Yes, she was married to Eddie Fisher when Carrie was born. Yes she sang the title song. Yes, it was a hit. Don't understand how the orchestra could be more distorted than the voice as the orchestra is background to the vocals and is soft and relatively quiet. I did not hear that particular show so I can't comment but I don't hear any distortion on KEX but, then again, I only listen to it on my CC Radio Plus or on my JVC HD radio in HD and it sounds just fine on both. The only noise and distortion I hear is the splatter I get when I drive by their transmitter on I-205. It overrides anything else I am listening to on the AM Band on my HD radio in the car. It is probably due more to 620 than 1190, however. I did not have the big problem until 620 increased their power there.
