What were some of your favorite songs that were huge back in the day, but are completely ignored today on the radio. (they dont necessarly have to be your favorite songs, but they are songs that were HUGELY popular back in the day, and for some reason they don't see the light of day on the radio anymore.

Here are some that I can think of.

Van Halen- "Poundcake"( you never hear this VH song on the radio anymore and it was huge back in the day!

Alice Cooper- Poison

Billey Joel- "its all about soul"

Joey Lawrence, the kid brother on the TV show Blossom (WHOAH) had a short lived music career back in the early 90's. This was a huge Top 40 hit back in 1992.

I hear that song all the time on Charlie! I can see why most stations don't play it. After about 5 seconds you want to reach over and throw your radio out the window, OR reach over and grab a sharp object.

This is worth my 2000th post!!!!

Cat Stevens - Foreigner Suite

Harry Chapin - Bummer

John Prine - Sam Stone

Jonathan Edwards - Shanty (They actually play this every once in a while on Sirius 16)

Michael Murphy - Rosewood Bitters

Just to name a few. There are sooooo many great tunes that don't get air play anymore that we could overload Dan's server listing them!!!!!

"Pieces of April" by Three Dog Night. A nice contemporary song that stayed on many a station's regular rotation for about 20 years after debuting in 1973 then one day, seemingly never played again.

Amus says, "Alan O'Day Undercover Angel was a #1 hit in 1977, that tells me more about 1977 than I care to remember"

Sorry, but here are some more infamous #1's from 1977:

You Don't Have To Be A Star-Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr

Torn Between Two Lovers-Mary MacGregor

Love Theme from A Star Is Born-Barbra Streisand

Don't Give Up On Us-David Soul

Southern Nights-Glen Campbell

Da Doo Ron Ron-Shaun Cassidy

Star Wars Theme-Meco

You Light Up My Life-Debby Boone (#1 for 10 weeks, the biggest charting record of the 70's)

Come to think of it, I agree, more than I care to remember!

George Throrgood's almost 10-minute long "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer." Last time I heard it on the radio was around 1996 or so, on the "Rockin' 107.1" station I mentioned in another thread.

Although it's worth mentioning that I *did* hear it on DMX's "Club Blues" channel about a month ago. But I wouldn't even remotely consider a music service like DMX "radio" per se, although I know several people who [mistakenly] would/do.

(The parents' groups, politicians and lobbyists might find the song a bit un-PC nowdays, because it mentions alcohol-containing intoxicants at least a couple times in passing....... ;o)

"Puttin' On The Ritz" by Taco. Used to hear it on Sunny 910/1520.

I'll probably list more as I think of them.......

Oh yeah, they play "White Bird" *sometimes* on KLTH. (Note emphasis on "sometimes".)

"Candle In The Wind 1997" by Elton John. Used to hear it all the time on KINK and KKCW, on my parents' radios, in the late 90's. Of course, they play his original version (well, KKCW does/did anyways) about Marilyn Monroe ad nauseum today........

Whoa Motozak2!

The "original" version of Candle In The Wind comes from Elton John's 1974 album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and is much much different than the version you hear on K103 today. The verion K103 plays is from Elton's 1987 "Live in Australia" LP.

He, of course, re-recorded the song a third time in 1997, folowing Princess Diana's death.

You must be a young 'un! :-)

I have never heard the 1974 studio version of Candle In the Wind, either. I will have to go look for it now! As for the other songs, I would like to hear some of these again!!

Here are some others for the list:

Rock Me Amadeus - Falco
Dominique - The Singing Nun
Greatest American Hero Theme* - Joey Scarbury
Walking On Air - Stephen Bishop

* Believe it or not, I'm walking on air!
I never thought I could feel so free-ee-ee!
Flying away on a wing and a prayer.
Who could it be?
Believe it or not, it's just me.

DT, speaking of obscure Ted songs, try and find "Papa's Will". AWESOME tune. Ted and the Amboy's at their finest!

Actually I Googled it and here is a link to the mp3.

It seems like it's a little fast, but then it's been a LOT of years since I've heard it.

Yes Chris Beebe was a GM who came in, shook out most of our music and said GL was uptempo and that was as far back as he wanted to hear oldies. He wanted lots of GL in the rotation. It became a running joke everytime GL would come up in the rotation we would announce it as ...."off the request line for Chris", or "Going out to Chris"..............

Alfredo...The Stephen Bishop song you are trying to remember is "Save it for a Rainy Day". We play it on KBPS. In the Kid Rhythm catagory we also play "Dominique" by The Singing Nun. Other songs we play that have been mentioned since my last post include: "99 Luftballons" -Nina (we also play the english version)..."You Don't Have To Be A Star" - Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr..."White Bird" by Its a Beautiful Day..."I Want A New Drug" - Huey Lewis..and we're playing both the live version of Elton John's "Candle in the Wind" as well as the version for Princess Diana.

I have a 45 rpm single of Stephen Bishop's "Save it For a Rainy Day," but there was another hit record that Bishop had in 1989. I remember hearing this song on rotation on WFBG-AM during its brief appearance on the charts. Once it dropped off the top-40, I never heard it on the radio again. I had to do a Google search on the phrase "'walking on air' lyrics" to find out that it was Bishop who sang this. Nonetheless, I am a bit surprised that many of the songs that we consider forgotten hits can still be heard somewhere on the Portland radio dial. I even heard the infamous "Timothy" on KPSU a few weeks ago.

Has anyone heard this one on the radio recently:

Speaking of KBPS (AM), I should probably mention that on Thursday I made my annual call in to the station (when I heard it was their last day on the air there).

Told the girl (if she's 18, I apologize) on the air that I actually liked the summer format, even though I'm old (compared to them, anyway!). She thanked me since she said they don't get that many nice calls.

Then she asked me if I wanted to make a request. Well, having listened to the station before and knowing what songs they have, I requested Johnny Hates Jazz's "Shattered Dreams." I then added something along the lines of 'as an inside joke, it's dedicated to "voicetracking and automation."' :-)

Minutes later, at a little after 2:45 PM, there it is!

That's what I miss about live DJs... you can actually give them a call, sometimes if you have something nice it really does make their day. Something else about the summer format... I don't know any other station where you can hear amateur electrical tips, or for that matter anyone who really sounds like they love what they're doing, probably knowing good and well it's probably the only station where they'll do this stuff live.

Tell others about 1450!

Just did this last week. Was riding in a car I had not yet checked for AM stereo capability. (2004 model) Tuned 1450, and there it was!

I got the usual (and frustrating) reaction of "wow! that sounds pretty good, no fuzz!", took a moment to explain that station and what it does.

They like it.

Troglidyte
Harry Truman
Chickaboom
Swearin To God
The Last Game Of The Season
The Night Chicago Died
Candy Man

Star-Stealers Wheel (I still like this one)

Rocky..."I never had to die before, don't know if I can do it".... (UGH)

and

Most of ABBAs hits. (MORE ABBA!!!)

was fishin thru the records and came across the K-Tel section.... had to play them! a few aged well, but obvious why some that were hits are never played

Now everybody sing

Life is a Rock but the radio rolled me.....

Bonus points if you nail the artists as the song fades............

Long ago and far away I ran this song as a contest sing the lyrics win an in dash am/fm cassette and installation courtesy of some long out of business car stereo place. Many tried, few got to the first chorus. Finally had a drawing for the stereo from all the contestants

Perhaps a whole another category, but how about songs that were hits in the NW, but nowhere else, thus never played anymore.

People like Stan Forman can probably rattle off a bunch from the 60's, but I remember one from the 70's, "Sail On Sailer" by the Beach Boys. As I recall, it got a lot of airplay in the NW but never charted on the Billboard Top40.

They've been gone almost two years now. I'd say that qualifies as "a long time."
Also, Musicology played some bits from some of their other songs, and a brand new song on a brand new album.
I wish they podcasted the show.

How about BJ Thomas' also rans like "I Just Can't Help Believing" and "Most of All"? Both nice songs that got a bit of airplay and lingered around for a decade then fell into the great jukebox in the sky or perhaps, KBPS's collection bin.

I used to listen to them when I lived in Sherwood in the mid-90s (I was in high school back then). It was a bit of a stretch, but worth it. They put me live on the air as a caller back then (yes really! Scary I know), then commented something like 'he's probably standing on his head with a pan and a toothbrush in the air.' So the station actually gets out better than people initially think.

They also had a song on the playlist that, come to think of it, I haven't heard in years... Orange Astronauts' "Athletes on Acid!" Something tells me it's not in rotation there anymore... :-(

In addition to Find Another Fool, how 'bout:

Hey Sly,
What about "Batdance" from Prince. That was a huge hit off the Batman soundtrack and you never hear that song on the radio today.
Here is a blurp about the song from Wikipedia.

Batdance" is a song by Prince, from the 1989 Batman soundtrack. Helped by the film's popularity, the song reached number one in the U.S., becoming Prince's fourth number-one single, and first since 1986's "Kiss." On Aug. 5, 1989, it knocked Martika's "Toy Soldiers" out of the top spot, but was quickly replaced by Richard Marx ("Right Here Waiting") the very next week. When "Batdance took over the No. 1 spot, another movie soundtrack hit, Bobby Brown's "On Our Own" (from "Ghostbusters 2") was in the runner-up position. "Batdance" was Prince's first single to be issued on compact disc in the U.S.

Add Martika's "toy soldier" to the list. And Bobby Brown "on Our own" From Ghostbusters 2.
That Bobby Brown song was played NON stop on top 40 radio back in the late 80's but you never hear it on the radio today.

Speaking of Bobby Brown, He had a huge hit in 1992 called "Humpin around". That song was huge during my senior year of High School.(they played that song at My senior prom and it really got people moving. I have yet to hear that song on the radio since 1992.

(sarcasm follows)
I think the idea of starting up something like "PDXRadio Acquisitions, LLC" or whatever has been discussed... the total capital we could raise was somewhere around $4.73, and nobody could agree on what format the first acquired station should run. :-)

"What about Batdance from Prince?"- Great tune! Other semi hits I recall off the Batman LP:
"Partyman", the whimpy duet with Sheena Easton called "The arms of Orion" and "Scandalous". The lady I was dating at the time was a huge P fan and she played the entire album constantly. I seen P in 2004 on the Musicology tour and he was great! I wish these days he would put out better quality music instead of wasting his time suing every fan that posts a picture or song from him on youtube etc...

Yes-Batdance! There was some controversy with this song having the words "Get the FUNK up" at the begining and a clip of the Joker saying "Oh, you son of a bitch!" at the end. Some radio stations and venues played an edited version that did not include these parts.

As long as we're talking about songs played in the Northwest...

There are two from the late 60s/early 70s that I would love to find again, and I can't think of a better place to ask.

1. A song that poked fun at Californians coming to Oregon (probably inspired by Gov. Tom McCall's infamous come-here-to-visit-but-don't-stay sentiment). Don't remember artist or title, but do recall that I heard it on KEED in Eugene in probably 1971-72 era. The portion of the lyrics that stuck with me: "Get your Airstream off of my home; turn your own jungle back into a Garden of Eden."

2. Much more elusive. Heard one time on a Eugene station in the same era, or a year on either side. Female folk singer, and the lyric fragment was "Lone star pine, drunk on midnight wine."

Any information about those two would be most gratefully received.

Thanks!

When Atlantic Records signed Nu Shooz they actually only signed John and Val... That effectively broke up the 8(?) piece band.

The remix was made by some DJ in Holland sampling bits of a Madonna song in.

in the last year or so an EP of acoustic versions of "I can't wait was independently released.

Ersel Hickey was a '50s rockabilly singer who never quite made the national top 40, but can be found in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. The Rockabilly Hall of Fame link does not document his death in 2004 at age 70.

NetOldies has his version of "Bluebirds" available. I'm a little surprised they don't have any of his other songs.

I have been listening to Netoldies for the last 1.5 hours. Sounds good but playing quite a variety. I did hear Roy Orbison and Roger Miller twice in the hour. They are playing many "forgotten" oldies.
I wish they would put up the name of what they are currently playing.

If you go back to the 1960s, there were tons of songs that were geared to adults and most of them never see the light of day anymore. As far as something from the rock era, I can barely stand "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro and that was a huge hit! Also, most novelty songs never make it past their original run. My all time least favorite would have to be "Teen Angel" by Mark Dinning. There's just something about the line, "They buried you today."! Really, any of those "death songs" are horrible: Last Kiss, Tell Laura I Love Her, Patches, Ebony Eyes etc.

I don't consider "Leader of the Pack" and "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" in the same vein as the others because they clearly aren't serious. The Everly Brothers' "Ebony Eyes" was apparently intended to make you break right down and cry! There's an old Country song, more of a narrative, called "Roses For Mama". It's about a guy who calls his mother to tell her he can't make it for Mother's Day because he's too busy. He stops at a store to buy some roses for her and sees a kid who also wants to buy some but doesn't have enough money. He gives the kid the money and on his way out of town, sees the kid leaning over a grave and the kid says, "Mama sure does thank you for these pretty roses!". He rushes back to the store, picks up his roses and takes them to his mother. Not a dry eye in the house!

Remember "the Night the Lights went out in Georgia" by Vicki Lawrence. That was number one. It was a gruesome story about a murder that someone was falsely accused but it turned out his sister pulled the trigger.
I heard Ray Manzurak say that "Riders on the Storm" by the Doors was closer to death than anything they did including "the end." Riders is one of my favorites.

Don't forget "Timothy," which was already mentioned in an above post, dated August 30. I wouldn't say that these "death songs" are necessarily horrible, but they don't fit the concept of "good times and great oldies," so they are purged from oldies playlists. In other words, the program philosophy of oldies radio today tends to exclude songs with very dark lyrics and songs about controversial subjects. If they were big hits back in the day, then people obviously liked these songs, at least when they were first released.

Mack the Knife originally had German lyrics and was part of the musical Die Dreigroschenoper (The Three-Penny Opera). This German play premiered in Berlin in 1928. The funny thing about the list that includes the Johnny Hates Jazz song is that I posted on Aug. 30th the fact that I was able to call in to 1450 KBPS, request the song, and hear it a few minutes later. Anytime I hear any of the high school kids on the air, it sounds like they're having a blast (even if they're playing music that's older than they are and stumbling over names of people and locations in the news reports), like they know this will probably be the only time they'll get to play DJ on an actual radio station.

Here is its website. They play a lot of forgotten favorites"

I was listening to this over the weekend and they do, in fact, play a lot of the oldies that you never hear anywhere. I would even surmise that they play things even BillCooper @ KBPS doesn't have. I decided to test their request icon and put in a few and it came back and said it put them in the que and they would play in about an hour. Sure enough, they showed up in about an hour. Not in sequence but separated by a few other cuts. It did not matter what they were. I put in two by the same artist and they played them both, separated by about four other cuts. When you type a song title, it may come up with several versions of that song....and it will play whichever one you want...... short or long.
For 50's and 60's, this looks like a good alternative.

Reading about what KBPS-AM has become makes me a little jealous. My time in the mid- to late-80s at the station was for the most part robotically playing tapes of NPR programming and the occassional locally-produced "performing arts" show. Music DJing was limited to a 2 hour block in the evenings (if at all), nothing on the weekends, and even "Summer Sound" was only on for 4-5 hours a day.

Today's KBPS-AM seems to be what I spent years begging Kevin Flink and "Herself" Patricia Swenson for: a station for the kids, by the kids. Unfortunately, it seems like all that came after my time. I'm very happy for the kids who get to participate in that program today, they definately are enjoying the fruits of the labor of all us who came before.

"Right, Said Fred" is an obscure song about a group of people building a house. It's similar to the idea behind "There's a Hole in the Bucket" but much more involved. Peter Marland Jones used it for exit music at KKEY over 30 years ago. I was quite surprised to hear a 90s group with the same name! There's no way that can be a coincidence!

> Not to mention its also The Rolling Stone's most profitable single in the last 20 years!

Yes-that song's dark, pessimistic tone ended up becoming somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy for The Verve because of copyright issues with the orchestral hook that it used. The court awarded copyrights to ABKCO Records (the copyright holders for the Rolling Stones' 1960s material) and songwriting credits to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. All of the royalties were turned over to Jagger, Richards, and ABKCO. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bittersweet_Symphony and scroll down to "Song Credits" for more information.

November 24th would be a good day to spin some Village Sound and mark the anniversary of an infamous flight from PDX.

I confess that I am a bit late ringing in on the 1450 lovefest. As a Summer Sound alumnus from back in the day, I agree that the station has never had a better music library or more variety. Of course, when Chrispdx and I were there some things were totally out of our control. For instance, we both suffered through the Iran-Contra hearings that scuttled most of our shifts in 1987. Because of the vision and dedication of Bill Cooper -- and the generosity of Scott Young -- KBPS is hands down the best music station in Portland. They have some great up and coming talent in the program too.

Littlsongs...thanks for the kind words about KBPS. We have some exciting things coming up. More on that later. But I did want to mention that very soon KBPS-AM will be the sole owner of those call letters. KBPS-FM is giving up the call sign in favor of KQAC. Their network of stations in the Dalles, Hood River, on the Oregon coast near cape foulweather is being billed as "the stations of "All Classical FM".

One more note. Littlesongs said that we have some "up and coming talent", and we do...but I wanted to mention that a student who graduated this past June (after taking a national gold medal for radio production from SkillsUSA *) is now the morning intern for Nelson and Terry on The Buzz. Zack is currently attending Portland State. He has a desire to have a career in broadcasting, and I think he's talented and creative enough to do it.

to respond to Chrispdx's earlier comment...you may have hit a brick wall getting "Herself" (PLS) to make any changes...but I know for a fact that Kevin Flink always championed your cause. He fought for years to get more time for kids to actually be on the air rather than run tapes and do short ID breaks. Kevin was primarily responsible for be getting the GM's job at KBPS and helped me make the changes I made over the past few years. If it wasn't for Kevin's dedication over more than 30 years at KBPS, the program may very well have ceased to exist years ago. Just thought I should give credit where credit is due!

Bill, I appreciate your response, and believe me, I know that Kevin was under PLS's Eight-Ball for most of the things that he wished the kids could do. There were two definate "cliques" in KBPS back then: Kevin and Ron Ross on one side, and PLS and Darryl Conser (sp?). Swenson and Conser considered the kids to be a nuisance, and pretty much did anything they could to limit the student's involvement in what they considered to be "their artsy radio stations", especially the FM side, which got most of their attention. Being a student of KBPS at the time was pretty frustrating, but also very rewarding, and I wouldn't trade my experiences there for anything.

I remember a Kevin Young who did the Beaver games for awhile and who later was KPAM's manager. He started on KPBS.

Sorry about the misprint. I didn't know there was a KPBS. I meant KBPS.

KINK is playing the long version of In a gadda da vida by Iron Butterfly. They play a much better variety of oldies when they play them than some oldies stations I must say.

Trix,
If I were to look inside YOUR IPOD, I'm sure I would find some Michael Bolton mixed in with Brittny Fox and Enuff Z Nuff.

Embarrassed to admit that you went to see Michael Bolton during the "Time Love and Tenderness" tour? I would be too if I were you!

If your only copy of a song is on MP3 then you don't have the song. MP3 is so sept. 10th. C'mon peeps. We demand blu-ray in its uncompressed audio glory. But music on MP3?

Trix,
If I were to look inside YOUR IPOD.

Don't need the POD I've got everything on my Blackberry. Right now I have AC/DC and GNR's new album along with The Wall.

Embarrassed to admit that you went to see Michael Bolton during the "Time Love and Tenderness" tour? I would be too if I were you!

Saw you there Beans... Wasn't that you in the 2nd row with the flowers? And didn't you throw your undies at him....? I'm sure it was you. Beans, your a mullet warrior! It's time to take down the Bolton poster. I'm surprised that your mom didn't do it years ago......

Some of us don't really care. Most of my music is on my computer in 128 to 192 MP3 compression, and I honestly can't tell the difference when it's playing through my car stereo, ipod headphones, or computer speakers. It's enough for me that I have the music available to me, most of it obtained for free.

Sorry to learn your hearing is shot. I once thought I couldn't hear the difference between mp3 and uncompressed files. Until I A-B it. You can! It's what you settle for.
