Another nail in the coffin of K-Hits. What potential this station had. Oh well, another reason for me to stick to my satellite radio exclusively.

Yep, that's what we've been talking about in the "Tom Kent night show on K-Hits" thread, which has turned into a partial thread hijack of 'all things K-Hits.'

Go ahead and stick with satellite radio... I'll be listening to regular radio until the bitter end.

Hell I thought radio had already died two years ago, then found out I just needed new batteries in the transistor. Replaceable batteries! Who Knew!

BTW as a tie in to the DC and K-HITS thread....

Anyone think Dennis might not want to go this route but his hand is being forced?

I suspect the funeral is already over and now the property is just, for sale. Unfortunately the body is still, luke-warm.

When the white eagle of the North is flying overhead
The browns, reds and golds of autumn lie in the gutter, dead.
Remember then, that summer birds with wings of fire flaying
Came to witness springs new hope, born of leaves decaying.
Just as new life will come from death, love will come at leisure.
Love of love, love of life and giving without measure
Gives in return a wondrous yearn of a promise almost seen.
Live hand-in-hand and together we'll stand on the threshold of a dream.

hMMMMM, KQOL might win by default. T.C. was pushing hard to give K-Hits a run, now Hits is on the market and Tony is leaving the market.....

"Another nail in the coffin of K-Hits. What potential this station had. Oh well, another reason for me to stick to my satellite radio exclusively."

When they did their hits A-Z a month ago, I thought it wasn't that bad. However, I still preferred the music on 1010, overall. Even their playlist is limited and there are things I don't care for but I do hear things I haven't for a long time.

I was in Wisconsin-Ohio a few weeks ago and the car I rented had Sirius Satellite. I landed on their Sirius Gold (5) and thought it was great. I heard other things I haven't heard for a while and it was great for a week. I would listen at random times and when I drove from Wisconsin Rapids to Sandusky, Ohio for 10 hours, plus the return from Sandusky to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I noticed that they even had a limited playlist as I was hearing many repeats. At the end of the week, I was ready to try something else. Plus the kids were tired of my "old" music. Didn't matter too much because they were usually sleeping during the long drives but on the short ones in town, they wanted something else. Even listening randomly to their picks, after a few days I noticed repeats on those, also.
My conclusion from my random sampling is that satellite isn't really much different than regular radio.....limited playlists. Just more possibilities. True, they don't have commercials, but they compensate with promos and bumpers about every 2-3 selections. It could get just as boring after a while.

I think that might be part of the issue.

You hate repeats if they're songs you don't like personally.

You think "I hear this song too much" if you thought "it's okay," or even like the song but don't want to hear it constantly.

You love repeats if they're your all-time favorite songs you never get burned out from hearing.

I've said before that long-gone radio station in Portland I liked seemed to repeat just about everything every three hours... however a majority (not all!) of the music was stuff I liked. So I didn't mind hearing some stuff constantly. For people who didn't like the same songs, the station must have been death warmed over.

Anyone else ever been in another city and realized that the station you're listening to isn't really better, they just play the songs in a different order, and/or the rotations are different so you only hear the songs you hate less often except for your favorite song at the time (which happens to be part of the lesser rotated set), and other songs are overplayed? I'm going to guess it's because we spend so much time listening to stations we're familiar with that we can nit-pick every single song, but the station that plays the same format in another town we like better because we only listen to it for a few hours before moving on to another city (or back home).

NOPe! I hate hearing the same songs all the time. Even my favorite songs of all time I get burned out on, which Is why I can't listen to Classic Rock very often. Even though I love clasic rock, I'm so burnt out of hearing certain songs that I just don't listen that often. Everytime I hear Queen on the radio(who I LOVE) i usually turn the station because I'm so sick and tired of hearing the same BURNT OUT Queen songs. I could go the rest of my life without ever having to hear "another one bites the dust". 10 years ago I listend to Classic rock non stop, today, I listen very little because the music never changes,(as far as song selections.) I'm sorry but I don't ever want to hear "More than a feeling" By Boston, EVER!!
How many times to you have to hear your favorite song before you never ever want to hear it again?? 5-6 hundred times??
Thats why I'm excited that 94.7 is doing a new music hour because I want to hear some NEW MUSIC on the radio. I've noticed that rock stations play very little new music anymore. Yes they do play new music, BUT nothing like they used to. Is it because the new rock is not testing well or because research shows that people like the familiarity of the older songs?

THe only problem I have with 94.7 is that a lot of the new bands they play, I don't like, but atleast they are breaking new bands and its something different than hearing Queen "anotherone bites the dust" for the Billionth time.

One axiom that has been around forever, decades in fact!. And if its " Oldies "...which nowdays we have different formats described in many terms, but its still OLDIES..and that axiom is : If its Oldies, people like hearing them over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. And most programming depts only use well tested music as their mainstay, unfortunately IMO

There are still a lot of people out there listening to broadcast radio over the age of 35...and those demos usually prefer some form of OLDIES...different genre' of oldies..lately its been the Charlies, Bobs, Alices, Jack etc formats, which include the classic rock formats as well ,but basically its OLDIES..so that is why you get to hear all those tunes over and over and over and over and over and over and over again..

Was Dave Hood even on K-hits a year before letting him go??

What a waste of time, money and effort to bring Dave all the way to portland and then let him go within a year.

K-hits is done with. Stick a fork in that station, it is a goner! They have ruined the station by adding these stupid 80's songs, which Im starting to hear all the time. This station is starting to sound like Charlie or Mix 1075.

To a casual observer, it seems that KHITS started going downhill (as you all seem to think) when they closed the Mark Lindsey Restaurant.

Hmmm

I think there is some element of truth in what Newflyer, Beano, and Kennewickman say about oldies. It is obvious that most on this board are not average listeners and we all have our viewpoints. Let me just say that I like songs from all decades. I also dislike some from all decades. I do have preference for early R&R, the first decade. Having said that, there are many cuts from each decade that are seldom played that are just as good as those that are played all the time. Yes, some I am less tired of than others. All I am saying is lets have more plays of some not heard often, or at all in many cases, and less repeats. I would rather listen to a station that PLAYS everything rather than just saying they do.

As bad as 1010 may be, at least they seem to add new cuts to their rotation weekly, it seems. I don't listen all the time, however. I'll listen to new music, also. Unfortunately, there is just not that much new music that interests me these days. At least, that I have heard.

Has anyone noticed what I perceive to be the new image voice on K-Hits? It sounds just like the one on KISN-FM and the fact he's promoting the "K-Hits, Kissin' the Summer of Love Goodbye Labor Day Weekend" just adds to my suspicions!

Its about damn time! That geeky Voice guy they have had on K-hits is HORRIBLE, its turning people off of the station. That was one of the low points with K-hits, their imaging people are terrible.

It occurred to me that perhaps the reason for a more low key image voice and a lack of jingles could be the fact that K-Hits had more of a "rock lean" than Kool, for instance. I don't think they do it anymore but "Stairway to Heaven" used to be in rotation. Kool wouldn't touch it in any of their incarnations.

And now, the rest of the story: I mentioned that K-Hits is running the Kissin' the Summer of Love Goodbye Labor Day Weekend and the promos feature the old KISN-FM image voice. Now that it's here, I notice they're playing about 11 60s songs an hour, up from 5 recently and 2-3 before that. The other thing is the way it's announced by the image voice and the regular staff: "We're Kissin'(short pause)the Summer of Love Goodbye on K-Hits 106.7!" It sounds like we're listening to KISN and the mention of K-Hits is just an afterthought! Is it possible they plan to bring back the Kissin' identity and if not, why go through all of this? By the way, I'm hearing some songs I don't normally hear like "Pictures of Matchstick Men" and "I Say a Little Prayer For You" by Dionne Warwick instead of Aretha Franklin!

Warwick's version - the one most Oldies stations play - was the original and highest charting (#4 in '67). Franklin's remake hit #10 in '68.

I think K-Hits is testing the waters for an image change. Having the old KISN image voice over music sounds kinds like a jingle, something K-Hits has stayed clear of. Except for the jingle package, it wouldn't take much for K-Hits to sound a lot more like KISN in this way. I wonder if the higher-energy and more Top 40-sounding Tom Kent show is the impetus for all this?

I think it would be a great change for K-Hits. Heck, why not become the new KISN-FM? The current imaging seems dry and seems to suck the life out of the format. Of course, being a fan of the the past two KISN incarnations makes me biased.

K-hits would Be FOOLISH not to use the KISN call letters. That is unless Kool 1059 beats them to it.

The imaging on K-hits is ABSOLUTELY AWFUL! That geeky voice guy has done nothing but bring that station down. k-hits should be full of energy and its not. No wonder their ratings have been droping!

Clear Channel owns the KISN calls so anything CBS did along those lines would have to be with similar ones.

If Clear Channel owns the KISN call letters than why didn't clear channel use KISN instead of Kool 1059?? Kool sounds more like a Smooth Jazz station than an oldies station!

KOOL is Clear Channel's Oldies brand from KOOL Phoenix. They also run the KISS brand and that could be the reason. I have to wonder if the KISN brand would have much appeal to anyone under their early 50s.

Just to confuse you more, KOOL in Phoenix is owned by CBS. So is Kool (KXKL) in Denver.

The KKSN call letters are currently warehoused on Entercom's 1390 in Salem (the former KSLM). Maybe some sort of deal is in the works for them instead.

Also... the current KISN was one of the stations sold to GapWest.
