"Erickson's Cuba trip: More cigars, less charity"

Congressional candidate Mike Erickson took a six-day visit to Cuba in 2004 that he called a "humanitarian trip" to aid disabled Cubans oppressed by Fidel Castro, but the trip was instead a vacation that included bars, Havana cigars and the Tropicana nightclub.

Erickson said he visited a medical center, met with doctors and attended a presentation on the plight of the disabled. But travel documents obtained by The Oregonian, others who accompanied Erickson and representatives of U.S. and Cuban charities tell a different story.

For example, the medical center Erickson said he visited does not exist.

Erickson, a Lake Oswego businessman, said he gave a Cuban charity 20 boxes of medical supplies worth $9,000, including prescription drugs used to treat asthma and basic items such as vitamins and Band-Aids.

But two others on the trip said Erickson exaggerated his donation and his charity involvement.

Erickson said he went to restaurants but not nightclubs. One man on the tour, however, said he and Erickson shared a table at the Tropicana, a place he described as "a Ricky Ricardo-style nightclub with showgirls."

He said he toured a medical center behind the headquarters building on the following day. "You could meet the people and see where the aid's going to and so forth," Erickson said.

There are no hospitals or medical offices behind or adjacent to the charity's office, said Gisel Brito Altunaga, who works there

After The Oregonian informed Erickson there was no medical center or staff at the location, Erickson changed his account of what happened. His campaign manager, Jeff Harvey, said Erickson brought supplies to another clinic elsewhere in the city, where he went on a tour.

I wonder if he took his girlfriend, you know, the one that had the abortion that he didn't pay for as he dropped her off at the clinic with a check in hand?

This guy wouldn't know the truth if he stepped in it.

Mike Erickson is your typical rich GOP cigar smoking lying two face piece of crap. I hope he blows all his money on his losing campaign and then loses his business as his customers find out what a scum sucking POS he really is.

Hate speech is what you listen to every Sunday morning. Your kind calls it a sermon.

"God is kinda a daily thing"

I know it is. There's no rest for the snake oil sales team.

Now, getting back to the topic of the thread, how can anyone support Mike Erickson at this point? He's had a history of lying dating all the way back to college.

The only way he's gonna get support is if he lies through it, and cultivates enough friends to help him through that task.

Broadway: No. It's not hate speech. Nobody likes do as I say and not as I do types. They like them less when they appear holier than thou at the same time.

Hoping he gets some payback for social abuses isn't hate, it's a simple clamor for justice.

Thank god Erickson is the Republican candidate for the 5th District! I think the guy has virtually no chance to replace Hooley.

Maybe your sermons aren't hateful, but I've seen a lot of so called christians practice and advocate hate in the name of Jesus.

I like your Christ,
I do not like your christians,
They are not like your Christ.

Is Broadway really Herb?

As for Erickson he says he is looking for his receipts. If this was a "charity" donation it would show up on his schedule A on his 1040 form. So forget the receipts and just turn over your tax returns.

Saw Mike Erickson yesterday as I was on my way into work at the fair. He was at a gate all by himself greeting those entering and leaving that gate. He seemed uncomfortable and or bored.

At least Gordon Smith looked happy to be where he was last night. At Creedence Clearwater Revisted in the Pavillion.

Your kidding he was at Creedence? Did he leave before they did "Fortunate Son"? Let's hear it for irony.
