Not to hijack - but I have seen Oregon abbreviated as Ore. more and more lately. As opposed to what I thought we all agreed upon was going to be the standard TWO letter abbreviation; Or. |

Wire services and newspapers still use "Ore." "OR" is the abbreviation standardized by the USPS. Several other common words are found in this system: HI, MA, PA, ME, IN, OH, etc. |

Newspaper writing style people have been reluctant to adopt the Post Office abbreviations, preferring to stick with the de-facto abbreviations that have been in use for many years. Thus, they prefer Mass. over MA, Ore. over OR, etc. I didn't realize this until recently, when I was handed a photocopy of a writing style tutorial targeted at people who write letters to the editor. This is in sharp contrast to my elementary school English classes, which emphasized the use of the standard two-letter abbreviations. |
