I'd be sorely tempted to move back to Bend if I had a high-speed internet connection and my biz better established... And it's changed A LOT since the late 70s. Loved it then, and I'd love it now... |

My old HBG buddies are looking better! 104.1 and KQAK made gains. Even 95.1 had a good book. Laser will never do well, it's signal is terrible. |

Looks like the sampling for KRXF is starting to fall off already. They've got a fairly eclectic playlist, much like NRK. Bend is a pretty progressive market, but I've rarely seen stations like that produce good numbers. |

96.5 would be better off as "Bob FM"...and long as 98.3 (which covers Bend perfectly) is Classic Rock. Listeners would be more likely to tune into 96.5's weak signal, if a unique format was being offered. |

96.5 won't be there much longer. It'll be 96.3 in West Linn. |

This is a good way to keep 96.5 on the air, before it moves into Portland at 96.3! |

Wow, I hope Buns Of Steel was saying the market is shit, and not the area. Bend is a beautiful city that's the perfect size and place for a great work/life balance. I'd love to live there. |

I was driving through Bend last night and was able to experience every PD's nightmare: The man behind the curtain was in his boxers! KBND was on auto pilot and everything the net sent was being aired - and little the local station was supposed to insert was where it was supposed to be. |

thats what's changed and crazy about modern day automated radio operations is that the operator (if there is one on duty) is not even listening to the station(s) as closely as they should...the silicon based unit still needs babysitting from the carbon based unit! |

KBNW seems to have taken to the air. I didn't listen long enough to see if they are currently simulcasting KWLZ, though. |

OK I jumped the gun - KBNW must be testing. I took a drive by the transmitter site and someone was there in the building. It also looks like they have new ATUs at the bases both towers. In any case, it should be on soon. |

Tom. Everything was pre-recorded for the weekend. KBND was moving into their new studios on Empire from Friday to Sunday. Since the STL's were down, all of the stations were being broadcast at the tower by computer. KBND finally came back on at the studio at 5:30am Monday. It was the last of the 4 stations to come back online. Their FM's KTWS, KMTK, and KLRR were on by Sunday at 6pm. |

This is KBND's first move in decades. I guess they have beautiful new studios on the top floor of the Pahlisch Homes building. |

That explains it. I did hear them announcing that the move caused them to air Dr. Laura in place of Lars on Monday. |

The website barely mentions the 96.5 FM frequency. I guess they figure that the FM will be moving into Portland, fairly soon. |

Ouch! When the full-powered 96.5 comes to Portland, I assume that we'll have to say goodbye to all of the 96.3 MHz LPFMs and translators in Portland, Woodburn, and McMinnville (K242AF, KKJC, KPCN, and KPVN), as well as squatters "KGayBC." |

KBND is a good station regardless of what building it's in. It was a big mess Friday night because of a problem with the merge. FMs ran flawlessly all weekend thank goodness. The KBND glitches continued until Tuesday when the STLs finally were restored. |

I suspect that the format will change when 96.5 comes to Portland, since the syndicated programs that are on KBNW now can be found on other Portland stations. If they stick with talk and change the lineup, they might end up like KTRO, which had low ratings, despite being on FM, because of its lineup of somewhat obscure talk shows. |

I had goofed when I originally looked up KWLZ on radio-locator. I missed the detail that moving to Portland would involve a frequency change to 96.3 MHz. Bicoastal's Salem translator will thus be forced to move or go dark. |

Two key differences between KRYP and KWLZ's West Linn CP is a directional signal which sends barely over 50% of the ERP towards Salem (to protect KZEL and KCRF?); and overall ERP - KRYP is at 1.6kW, KWLZ at 2.9kW. |

Question...how is KWLZ getting a directional signal from the Stonehenge site where all stations on the "panel" antenna are non-dir?...or will they have their own antenna? |

What you want to look at on the FCC's site is the field plot contour. They also list each radial separately if you want to plot it yourself. |

96.7 KCRF (Lincoln City) isn't a factor for Portland's new 96.3 signal. 96.1 KZEL (Eugene) and 96.1 KXXO (Olympia) are the only signals that need to be protected. |
|
Author: Semoochie Friday, August 29, 2008 - 2:28 am |

KXXO is moving to the Olympic Peninsula. KWLZ won't have to protect them as a C3. The only protection is to KZEL, assuming full Class C facilities, which they don't have. I think there's a good chance KZEL will be reclassified to C0 and KQLZ won't need to be directional, as long as it's still a C3. Of course, they could end up keeping the null with the reclassification and also send one toward KXXO to become a C2. Who knows? |
