I'd be sorely tempted to move back to Bend if I had a high-speed internet connection and my biz better established... And it's changed A LOT since the late 70s. Loved it then, and I'd love it now...

(My thanks to the intrepid soul running a couple of webcams from the west side...very cool!)

My old HBG buddies are looking better! 104.1 and KQAK made gains. Even 95.1 had a good book. Laser will never do well, it's signal is terrible.

Looks like the sampling for KRXF is starting to fall off already. They've got a fairly eclectic playlist, much like NRK. Bend is a pretty progressive market, but I've rarely seen stations like that produce good numbers.

96.5 would be better off as "Bob FM"...and long as 98.3 (which covers Bend perfectly) is Classic Rock. Listeners would be more likely to tune into 96.5's weak signal, if a unique format was being offered.

Then again, 100.7 would be wise to flip to "Bob FM"...and is one of Bend's strongest signals.

I was driving through Bend last night and was able to experience every PD's nightmare: The man behind the curtain was in his boxers! KBND was on auto pilot and everything the net sent was being aired - and little the local station was supposed to insert was where it was supposed to be.

Got to hear the 8:46 tone checks (with announcer)to test the relays for Network On, Network Off and Spot Trigger. A couple of highly-entertaining 1KC tones plus the obligatory long chunks of dead air to round out the festivities. Oh, and a little of Jim Bohannon's Westwood One show here-and-there.

Judging from the rankers at the top of this thread, maybe it's time to play tones and dead air for your next Focus Group. Seems to be working for them.

Tom. Everything was pre-recorded for the weekend. KBND was moving into their new studios on Empire from Friday to Sunday. Since the STL's were down, all of the stations were being broadcast at the tower by computer. KBND finally came back on at the studio at 5:30am Monday. It was the last of the 4 stations to come back online. Their FM's KTWS, KMTK, and KLRR were on by Sunday at 6pm.

I was told that they had to go out to the transmitter site and take out all the ID's that tried to time up to the news(they didn't have a dish at the transmitter site.)

Ouch! When the full-powered 96.5 comes to Portland, I assume that we'll have to say goodbye to all of the 96.3 MHz LPFMs and translators in Portland, Woodburn, and McMinnville (K242AF, KKJC, KPCN, and KPVN), as well as squatters "KGayBC."

KBND is a good station regardless of what building it's in. It was a big mess Friday night because of a problem with the merge. FMs ran flawlessly all weekend thank goodness. The KBND glitches continued until Tuesday when the STLs finally were restored.

And Combined's new facilities are gorgeous.

Too bad about most of the content! Sounds good though, and I suppose that's the draw!

Nice to hear the real production values of the various programs come through! Talk on FM is just decent. We need more of it.

I suspect that the format will change when 96.5 comes to Portland, since the syndicated programs that are on KBNW now can be found on other Portland stations. If they stick with talk and change the lineup, they might end up like KTRO, which had low ratings, despite being on FM, because of its lineup of somewhat obscure talk shows.

I saw the new studios for KBND, KLRR, KMTK, and KTWS today. They are very nice overlooking one of the big irrigation canal that runs through town.

They are still working on the prod rooms so everything is being produced out of the main studios. They have a number of remotes this weekend and the Marti receivers are not hooked up...so the race is on to get it done.

Alfredo: The FCC website lists these stations:

KKJC-LP 96.3 McMinnville (Calvary)
K242AF 96.3 Portland (E.M.F.)
K242AB 96.3 Salem (Bicoastal)
KPVN-LP 96.3 Woodburn (Centro)
KPCN-LP 96.3 Woodburn (Pineros)
K243BG 96.5 Corvallis (Cumulus)

Would all of the above signals be forced off the air, or could K242AB in Salem stay on, if 96.5 came to Portland?

I am listening to 96.5 right now from my home in downtown Hillsboro. A tuner with a narrow IF is needed to pull this in because of K242AF. The 96.5 signal is fairly strong on an old RCA VHF TV log periodic mounted on a pole about 42' above ground level and pointed east. (Thanks JR for helping me get this mast put up!) On a rooftop RadioShack VU-120 about 24' above ground level, the signal is much weaker.

The automation on KBNW is screwing up big time. I just listened through about 20 minutes of dead carrier before the top-of-the hour ABC news! I am getting full quieting with the signal pulled off the RCA antenna, though.

Scroll to the bottom of the "Technical Information" section of this page for a look at the KBNW-FM construction permit:

http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/finder?sr=Y&s=C&call=KWLZ&x=19&y=7

The signal will be 2.9 kW on 96.3 MHz. From the transmitter coordinates, it looks like the station will be at the Stonehenge tower.

I had goofed when I originally looked up KWLZ on radio-locator. I missed the detail that moving to Portland would involve a frequency change to 96.3 MHz. Bicoastal's Salem translator will thus be forced to move or go dark.

Two key differences between KRYP and KWLZ's West Linn CP is a directional signal which sends barely over 50% of the ERP towards Salem (to protect KZEL and KCRF?); and overall ERP - KRYP is at 1.6kW, KWLZ at 2.9kW.

Wait a minute... 2.9 x .501 = about 1.453. Not much difference between those two then.

Question...how is KWLZ getting a directional signal from the Stonehenge site where all stations on the "panel" antenna are non-dir?...or will they have their own antenna?
According to the FCC 60dbu contour map it looks pretty non-directional...

What you want to look at on the FCC's site is the field plot contour. They also list each radial separately if you want to plot it yourself.

Probably a major difference between receiving one station versus another at any given location is the location of any other stations in the area.

I still remember coming home after visiting the coast, reaching milepost 12 on the Sunset Highway and thinking 'great, we're in range of the Portland stations again,' hit the preset for what was then Star 105.9 (when they were at 4400 watts on Skyline), and they amazingly came in (obviously a bit weaker than the 100kW stations, but it was there and coming in acceptably).

96.7 KCRF (Lincoln City) isn't a factor for Portland's new 96.3 signal. 96.1 KZEL (Eugene) and 96.1 KXXO (Olympia) are the only signals that need to be protected.

KXXO is moving to the Olympic Peninsula. KWLZ won't have to protect them as a C3. The only protection is to KZEL, assuming full Class C facilities, which they don't have. I think there's a good chance KZEL will be reclassified to C0 and KQLZ won't need to be directional, as long as it's still a C3. Of course, they could end up keeping the null with the reclassification and also send one toward KXXO to become a C2. Who knows?

From today's All Access:

HORIZON BROADCASTING GROUP LLC's KWLZ-F/WARM SPRINGS-BEND, OR, which recently flipped to a new Talk format, has gotten FCC approval of its move into the PORTLAND market. The station will change its community of license to WEST LINN, OR, change frequencies from 96.5 to 96.3 FM, and downgrade to Class C3 in the heart of the PORTLAND metropolitan area.

The FCC approved the move last week; the change was predicated on the move of 3 CITIES, INC. AC KXXO (MIXX 96)/OLYMPIA, WA's transmitter move to SOUTH MOUNTAIN.
