So last night I was outside at about 11 p.m. or so - maybe a little later - standing by my bar b que, facing generally southwest. I saw a pretty large flash of light coming from the direction of the town of Independence - perhaps a bit more south. Followed by a large enough boom that woke my wife up, made dogs bark, etc.. And that was from being what had to be around 15 miles away.

Did anyone else hear that boom?

I cannot find any story about it. But people that were near the actual source must have been REALLY rocked.

I was driving in my car last night and I saw a HUGE flash in the sky. There might have been a boom but my radio was cranked up so loud that I probably didn't hear it.

a. McCain going to afterburners to try and catch Obama created a sonic boom.

b. Mulder and Scully running from the ratings of their new movie created a sonic boom.

c. Aftershock from the other shoe dropping at CBS-Viacom radio.

d. Lightning and resultant thunder.

e. all of the above

A meteor. As far as 100 miles away. You heard the sonic boom as a piece survived the trip through the upper atmosphere and entered the lower atmosphere faster than the speed of sound. This is rare and if it hit the Earth, probably the size of a pebble.

Just imagine if it was a mile in diameter. You and your BBQ would be toast! :-)

CJ,

I'm between you and Idependence (more or less) and was asleep with the window open, and did not hear anything.
I must sleep more soundly that I thought.
Been feelin' kinda crappy this week.

But in the past, I've heard and seen this before and it seems like it always comes from that direction.
Usually the lights go out for a few hours, and the PGE trucks start driving up and down the streets.

Most likely a transformer popped.
