Good for Phil! It's too bad I no longer listen to his show, because it's just not what I consider funny anymore, the way his old show was. But I wish him all the success in the world. Andrew

I listen to the new Phil Hendrie show every now and then, but a lot has changed. He still has the character voices, but he is now voicing most of the callers, as well. I am not sure whether this means that he doesn't have that many listeners or whether he got tired of dealing with bewildered new listeners who took the characters seriously. Interestingly, he labels himself a "free-range progressive," although I suspect that most people who use the "progressive" label probably distance themselves from Hendrie over his support of the Iraq war.

Just one more reason why divisive times like these suck for radio. Otherwise talented people like Hendry and Dennis Miller turn into pissed-off pandermongers. I'd love to hear Phil unleash that huge creative brain again, but not on a weenie nighttime signal that doesn't even cover the Urban Growth Boundary. Put him in PM drive and I'll give KPAM a button again.

Alfredo, I think Phil claimed that his old show just didn't work from a commercial standpoint. In a sense I think he was right. It attracted a very loyal cult following of people like us but couldn't break into the mainstream. Part of that may be that the old show had a certain nastiness to it - which, I confess, is one of the things I enjoyed about it. I've heard the new show a few times. First of all, I really didn't find it funny. I'm not even talking about the "fool the callers" aspect; in the old show, I most enjoyed simply his characters and their sometimes bizarre scenarios. Like Ted Bell insisting it should be legal for him to drive 100mph+ in his neighborhood because he drives a Porsche 911 and knows how to drive it. Phil could go on and on about that without even taking a real call and I'd find stuff like that hilarious. The new show, from the few times I've heard it, seems very different in tone, like he's shooting for a new listener base...which doesn't include me, apparently. Andrew

Andrew - I, too, miss his old show! Lately, though, on the few occasions that I have listened to this new show, the Dooley's, Margaret Gray and others seem to be more like the old show than when this new one started. I hope that is a good sign of things to come. Like you, I like his characters more than his rants. When he begins to rant, I change stations.

Last night, I happened to catch about 5 minutes of his show about 11:40PM and he called Margaret to tell her they were going to run the best of Margaret clips, I think on Friday, and he wanted to go over some of the topics with her. So, they got into a discussion that most of what she said on those were misinterpreted or out of context.........etc. So, if you want to hear a bunch of Margaret stuff, listen sometime this week.

The new show almost has a "split personality" about it. Sometimes, he is doing a real interview or trying to make a serious commentary. At other times, he is acting as a satirist. One has to listen very closely sometimes to tell which he is doing. I feel somewhat bad for his legitimate guests because the comedy aspects of the show indirectly detract from the legitimate guests and their views, in my opinion.

I agree, his satire and character voices were what made the show great. Used to laugh myself to sleep listening to Hendrie when he was on in Eugene. He was funniest when his own character voice would crack himself up!

I believe the Margaret Gray Show is supposed to happen on Friday when he goes on vacation. I'm hoping that he will be able to use stuff from his old shows. My all-time favorite Margaret Gray moment was on the Friday before Labor Day in 2001 when Margaret wanted everyone that was having a picnic on Labor Day to call her before having the picnic because she was the founder of Labor Day picnics. Callers kept calling to tell her they had been having Labor Day picnics for years and that she was crazy. She would just respond by asking callers if they'd ever done various things. Finally, she said, "But I was the first to put pickles from the deli in my potatoe salad!" This probably doesn't seem funny by my rambling typing, but it was the first time I'd ever heard his show. It was hilarious! Between the clueless callers and her comments getting stranger as a reaction to each caller, it was very funny. I was on my way to a party and I remember showing up to the party with tears in my eyes from laughter. My other favorite Margaret Gray moment was during the 2002 Olympics. She wanted to bring a gun to the Olympics because she was "Margaret Gray" and needed to protect herself. Okay...clearly I miss Phil's old show. Sigh.
