Do you frequent a local coffee Shop, doesn't necessarly have to be a mom and pop coffee shop,BUT somewhere you go that makes a decent cup of coffee.
Lets hear em. And please don't say Starbucks, If thats where you get coffee everyday, thats fine, BUT lets give some love to some great coffee shops that are not STARBUCKS!

Its time to spill the joe. (just not on your lap) Lets hear about em'.

If you had a few hours of free time to grab a cup of coffee at any coffee shop in portland, where would you go?? And why is this coffee place so great?

I have yet to find a place in Portland that makes better coffee than Peet's. Sometimes the daily blend isn't a favorite, but even on a bad day is better than most. It was a day of celebration when the first Peet's open in NE Portland.

North Star Coffeehouse, located at 7540 N. Interstate and Lombard across from the Northbound Yellow Line MAX Station makes excellent espresso drinks. They use Stumptown Coffee. The women who own it are very friendly and make an excellent cup of espresso. Be patient because in the mornings, there can be a line. Parking can be a bit tight, but there are spaces in the back (it’s a house that’s been renovated into a coffee shop).

Peet's for me, hands down. 164th and Mill Plain. I used to go to the Brewed Awakenings down the street, after school, religiously, but I haven't been there in several years.

The coffee (for me, anyways) is way better than Starbucks--doesn't taste like wet cigar butts that have been sitting in a pot of boiling water since midnight two days prior. Oh yeah, and the carrot cake and cookies are very good and always fresh.

Peet's supports OPB! I have yet to see Starbuck's do anything like that.........

Just found out that there is still ONE Coffee People place left, but you may have to drive a ways to get it. Its in Beaverton and its Called Java Nation, for legality purposes they had to change the name BUT its the exact same products that Coffee people used.
Their Mochas taste EXACTLY the same as Coffee People, and their Coffee Tastes exactly the same as Coffee People.
The guy at the counter told me they use the exact same products as Coffee People. The Java Nation used to be a Coffee people, but they just changed the name of the store and thats the only thing that changed.

I miss Coffee People! They are under the same ownership at PDX as Schmizza, so I got a free coffee every morning.

I get five-pound Black Tiger beans shipped to me now ... I just can't find anything that's acceptable up here.

There was nothing better than a Coffee People cappuccino served in a glass Coffee People mug at the Hawthorne store in the mid to late 1990's. I'm telling you, they were delicious – and the staff was excellent, too. It's too bad their growth strategy didn't work.

Best Coffee?

It's called "The Original Pancake House Coffee" and it's mighty good, even at home! You can buy it by the bag there. It's a blend especially roasted by Boyd Coffee Co. for The Original Pancake House.

Someone mentioned the North Star, which is a great little coffee house for the reasons listed...

I am also voting for the James John Cafe, which is on Lombard in St. Johns, 2 doors down from Starbucks. They serve Stumptown, the people who work there/own it are great, they make awesome baked goodies, and they've just started doing Sunday night dinners.

Coffee People embarked on a rather weird expansion plan in the 1990's, opening single stores in Eugene, southern California, Denver and Chicago. I never quite understood the logic of this approach. I always though growing the business up and down I-5 might have made more sense. They hired a former executive from Mrs. Fields Cookies to grow the company, but it never worked out. Then they sold out to Dietrich's. And the rest is history.

My other favorite coffee house is Allan Bros. Preferably in Corvallis (any of the 3 of them), but any Allan Bros coffee house is happy.
