I have noticed Channel 45 (KNMT's ATSC channel) has been off the air for the last few days. What happened? Did the tower get hit by lightning last weekend or what?? ;o)

I noticed that too last night... But since I never really watch it I didn't worry too much about it :-)

That would be ironic!

Perhaps they are off to protect tower workers? They transmit from the same tower as the new CBS FM antenna (1207367). It is also possible that some cables/equiptment had to be moved to accommodate the CBS installation.

Broadway;

a little over a year ago, we speculated about your prospects of digital reception from the Portland stations on the thread "HDTV and the return of the Antenna"... it appears that you are getting the weakest station fine!
Did you have to change your antenna? increase the height? install a booster amp? Do you experience any drop-outs in severe rain/hail storms?

I get all the DTV stations from my outdoor Radio Shack antenna on my single story home in NE Salem...same antenna that I have been using for analog reception...notice lately that 49 goes bad once in a while...don't know why..hopefully my coax/ant is not needing service/replacement. Pickup up a reg tube TV with built in digital reciever for $245 at Fred Meyer last fall...love the crystal clear pictures with more of em...biggest improvement was KATU..it was always marginal reception with outdoor ant.

Not always receiving 49 doesn't strike me as much of a problem at this juncture. When they move to 30, power will increase to the maximum, up from the 700Kw or so that KPTV is currently running.

49 comes in decently at my apartment with an old pair of $3 rabbit ears purchased at Hi-School Pharmacy years ago.......of course, having a clear line of sight of the towers helps greatly! However, at my Folks' place, you almost always need to have an outside antenna in order to see anything (I have one of those too).......of course, living near Evergreen H.S. and only having a clean line of sight of KKAD/KPAM will do that, too. ;o)

Oh yeah--I got back from blowing up vinegar bombs and riding dirt bikes all afternoon at Goldendale an hour ago and reprogrammed 45 into my box (the Pansat) and now it is blowing in here at about 97-99%, whereas before it would only come at about 85-90% on a good, clear day. Did KNMT turn the power up somewhat or am I just receiving it under really good atmospheric conditions?

I Had not checked signal strength on the DTV channels for a while, but this morning when I did, KNMT is now in the middle of the pack (mid-high 80's)... KOIN-DT is now my weakest channel (high 60's).

KNMT-DT is impossible to receive here in southern Lewis County Washington or at least it seems to be as the best I can ever get is 5% while most Portland DTV stations are around 40-60% except for KATU-DT, KRCW-DT, and KPXG-DT. But for KPXG it is most likely because the antenna either has tuning or mounting issues.

DT stations on Sylvan tower have been operating at reduced power the last month or so to allow work on the tower. Most should be back to full power now.

Hey Broadway:
I am thinking of making the switch to an antenna at our house in Keizer.
Based on what you have said here, I will get quite a few stations, especially on my HDTV. I love HD and that is the only reason I have Directv.
So, in your opinion, in this area, how is the quality of HD and how many can you REALISTICALLY get? I have see the lists on line but that is a MAYBE list.

Dodger...I get all of the DTV offerings out of Portland...49 is cuting out lately and at times unwatchable...don't know when Ken Lewetag's chan 17 will go DTV soon and will be able to pick up since my antenna is pointed north and his TX site is W. Salem. Whats interesting is that chan 10,22,and 24 all have 4+ channels and again to get ABC material chan 2 crystal clear is worth the price alone...I can read the Jeopardy show questions more clearly! Basically doubled channels now recieved over air...for what their worth. BTW...do not use any preamp...just simple 5 element VHF/UHF Ant, 50 ft coax to DTV.

Wow, so total channels you get clearly?
Are you getting any Eugene stations?
I have read that with an omni directional and preamp I could get the Eugene channels, which would be good during NFL season as sometimes they carry different games!
What about KWVT?
Since I have an outstanding fear of heights, I guess I gotta get D&D to come out and put it up on my two story SLOPED roof! LOL

only 49 goes bad once in a while...yes...great to have all clear channels...No Eugene...have to point my antenna south...no rotor working now.
KWVT chan 17?
Yes...you have a hard install...need a roof monkey with tools and tar.

DT is interesting. It is different than SD transmission. There is no marginal or inbetween. It is either there or it isn't. When it is marginal, It is similar to what Broadway is experiencing with 49. It may come and go or occasionally pixelate, etc. When it is there and locked, it is good. When it isn't, well, it isn't. It could not work because you have too much signal and overdrive your set, or it could be not enough signal to lock on, or it could be "multipath" cancellations due to obstructions, whatever. You may get everything with an antenna on your roof and your neighbor may have different experiences with the same setup. It may work at a given height and placement on one part of your roof and not the other. It can be critical. On my set, I get everything just fine with the outside antenna on the roof except for CH2. If I unplug the lead from the set and put a 1 foot wire in it, I get CH2 perfectly but miss over half everything else. I am just not going to fool with it right now, I don't watch that much TV. Maybe in the fall.

Over the Air may be better quality than from cable or satellite. It has been said that some cable companies recompress the signal they get and the end result is that you would be getting a more compressed signal on cable than you would be getting OTA. That signal is also compressed, but not as much.
It will be interesting come next February.
