As a current member of 24 Hour Fitness, there isn't a day that goes by, that I wonder why the F did I sign up for this gym.
I've gotten Athletes Foot twice from this gym, I have a huge wart on my hand from bench pressing without gloves on. The other day I walked in and the Smell OF B.O. was so strong that it was burning my nose. I went and cracked open the window, and 5 minutes later one of the employees walks over and starts CLOSING THE WINDOW. I WANTED TO STRANGLE HER!!! Does anybody have a 24 hour fitness membership, and are you as unsatisfied with the place as I am? 24 Hour Fungus is so dirty. OH, and the other night I caught a homeless man washing his pants in the sink as I was walking in the mens locker room. I'd never smelt anything so disgusting in my entire life.

A 24 hr joint opened in Wilsonville, then closed shortly thereafter leaving members out of cash, but fungus free. :-)

You know, that's a good question. I forget. I'm thinking cash problems -- not really many people in the place even though it had a large fleet of machines by the window facing Hollywood Video.

There was an article in The Wilsonville Spokesman about it a few months back.

There was traces of Salmonella on the mats a few months back. Maybe they got salmonella poisoning.

I have been a member of 24 Hour Fitness for years and I haven't had any of the problems you've had Justin.

I wear weight lifting gloves so I have no calluses on my hands. I have only taken maybe a total of 10 showers in all my years at 24 Hour, but I would wear waterproof sandals. I'm close enough to walk to the gym so I shower at home.

My 24 Hour Fitness is pretty new, less than 2 years old. It's real improvement over the old one that was taken over from Gold's Gym.

Hey Chris,
These weren't calluses that I got on my hands, they were warts. I had to get them removed, the Doctors froze them off, but it keeps coming back. Also, Watch out for those blue Mats, those things are full of nasty stuff. Another thing that irritates me about the 24 Hour fitness I go to is that There is nothing to wipe off the equipment before I use or when I fisnish using the equipment. Shouldn't they supply wipes or something to clean off the equipment???

I think you've got some pretty skanky people at your particular gym.

I stopped going to the Hollywood 24 for the same reasons: my gym partner got a skin fungus that was very painful and had to be treated with antibiotics, pills and lotion, for three weeks.

There's also a homeless woman who frequents the place, no biggie, except that she bugs everyone all the time for supplies and they allow her to bring her shopping cart in the locker room.

I take my own wipes with me. I don't trust that what's in those spray bottles is anything more than water. I hardly see anyone using it when it's available anyway.

And I never go to the gym without my towel! :-)

After every gym workout I wash my hands. Then again I wash my hands a lot during any given day. If you handle money a lot I would highly recommend washing hands. Like Entre I also carry my own towel to the gym.

The new 24 Hour Fitness I attend does have the spray bottles to wipe things down. I haven't had any of the problems anyone has mentioned.

I don't take showers anymore at 24 Hour Fitness. I also belong to a neighborhood community center gym and work out their as well. It's a bit closer and sometimes I like the more intimate, albeit older equipment. Something rather "Rocky-esche" about it.

This discussion has been brought up before. About a year ago, one of the news stations did a special report on the cleanliness of 24 Hour Fitness. The particular location that was not disclosed, but it was a 24 Hour Fitness and it FAILED the health inspection. Gyms are CRawling with bacteria, fuingus, ect. ect. Work out at your own risk! I stoped going to the Gym over 3 years ago because I've seen some pretty shady people working out at the gym. People with open cuts on their arms, that are not covered with bandages! I couldn't think of an easier way to get a staph infection than using the arm curl machines. Plus I knew a friend who worked at a gym and the stuff he told me was pretty icky! A couple times a month the janitor would report finding capless needles laying by the toilet floor. Apparently some members would go inject themselves with steroids (in the ass) than leave the needle laying right by the toilet, making it really easy for someone to get stuck.

Gross! I would demand "sharps" containers in each stall.

This thread is worse (grosser) than the "bad dining" thread!

Amen to that Chris! They did a study on money a few years back on 20/20. They cultured random dollar bills then took them to the lab to see what was on them.

Cocaine and Fecal Matter. (no Joke) Those are the two most common items found on bills.
So remember next time you pull that 5 dollar bill out of your wallet, Chances are you are touching someones fecal matter and traces of cocaine.

Another repository of nastiness -- unwrapped candies at cash registers. You don't see them as much as you once did, but I saw a television report on how much grossness these candy dishes possess.

The troph at Izzy's Pizza is pretty nasty. What turned me off on it was when some dumb ass kid took the spoon out of the pudding and took a bite off of it, his mother saw him, took the spoon from him, and PUT IT BACK! I guess the rotten fruit didn't fall far from that tree! I told the staff and they replaced the item. Food buffets (troph's) are all gross!

Darktemper just because it happens in your presence IE the troph/buffet doesn't neccesarily mean its clean or sanitary.

I was eating at a Buffet one day. I was enjoying the delicious salad, and as I took a bite, something didn't taste right. I pulled it out of my mouth, and it was a penny.
YUMMY! I try to stay away from Buffets although you probably have a greater chance of getting sick by going to a 24 Hour Fitness than eating at a buffet.

Heres a concept for ya. The 24/7 Workout Buffet. The dirty buffet up front in the lobby for all your unsanitary eating needs and the gym in back for all your unsanitary workout needs. Just imagine the clientele.

In the 1970's there was a famous Swingers club called Plato's. It was located in downtown New York city. It closed in 1985 because of the AIDS scare, and not to mention it violated health codes, so the health department shut it down. Not only was it a Swingers club for couples BUT it had a HUGE buffet right smack in the middle of the club. That strikes me as a bit weird, and really dirty. Not only could you get your "freak on" but you could also get your "eat on" all in one building!
Nothing like waiting in line for a buffet, while an orgy is taking place right in front of you.
Gotta love the the 1970's, The decade known for "Free Love" and an all you can eat buffet in one building:-)

I don't even want to think what was REALLY in that potato salad at Plato's:-(

My friend who worked at Regal Cinemas said it was not uncommon to find dead rats in the pop corn machines, when employees come to work in the morning. Nobody Knows how the rats actually get into the popcorn machine, but they find a way. If you're dumb enough to buy snacks at the Movie Theater and pay their "RIP OFF" prices, I would go for the Milkduds and stay away from the Popcorn, Just an FYI!
