I take a bit of issue about something you said. Just a bit. It bothers me. I'm not making a Federal Case about it. But I figured I'd just see if you are willing to talk about it before I go off with incorrect assumptions about why you said it.

It seems like an adult thing to do.

If you just plain ain't in the mood, I respect that. But if you are, it would be cool if we just hashed it out - all the way out - so I can clear a few things up.

Willing?

Chickenjuggler, I don't have a clue about what the issue may be, but very much appreciate the spirit in how you've asked.

Feel free to let me know, whatever it is, and I'll do my best to be clear about my thoughts and mindful of yours as well. I may be away from my computer for part of the weekend, but expect to check in.

Best-

Herb

Great.

I didn't want to muddy up the Tim Russert thread with something that could eventually dissolve into something petty. But your comment, in response to mine, when I said that in my opinion, Tim Russert was perfect,

" Yet in reference to calling any non-deity perfect...even someone like Abraham Lincoln, John the Baptist, pick your pope, or fill in the blank...with all due and compassionate respect, let's allow them their humanity as well."

just irked me enough to want clarification from you.

So here are my fairly direct questions. It would be great if you could answer them just as directly - even if you only cite your opinion as support- as I ask them;

#1. Are you saying that my opinion is wrong to hold about Tim Russert? Please don't leave anything up to interpretation in your answer. In fact, it's exhausting to feel the need to cover every single base with disclaimers from me. Just a simple yes or no would be fine. You can expound all you wish. But in there somewhere, I would appreciate a simple yes or no at some point.

#2. Define perfect in the manner in which you believe I was actually using it. Decide what you ACTUALLY believe I meant, and then apply your definition of perfect. Are they one in the same?

You'll note that I haven't defined how I meant it. But I'd like to hear what you thought I really meant. Perhaps it was literal. Perhaps it was not. But decide what you believe I meant and say it - out loud.

We'll take it from there after you answer. And I will be honest. Promise. You too. OK?

You'll also note that I haven't asked you about what you said. We'll get there. Baby steps. It gets to a deep issue for me that I am trying to remedy - and I believe that you could help. But you've got to, for just a bit, let me show you where I am leading. Then, after that, I promise I will let you take whatever reigns of the conversation you wish. It's only fair.

Hi Chickenjuggler-

My definition of perfect is without flaw. I therefore wouldn't use the word perfect regarding any human being. As far as if you were wrong in saying it, I was simply trying to point out in a respectful way that another word might be more appropriate. I sincerely meant no offense.

The word perfect can also align with being without sin. I don't know if you meant it that way, and come to think of it, perhaps not. But to allow anyone the moniker of perfection is the absolute opposite of what the Bible teaches. If we say some are perfect, we are denying what the Bible clearly teaches. For in believing we don't need a Saviour, that calls God a liar and says Jesus died in vain. The book of Romans addresses this topic.

No matter how wonderful someone is, and to me that includes Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther, John the Baptist, John Testrake*, Lenny Skutnik** and plenty of other people, we all fall short.

No one, short of God, is perfect. It's just part of the baggage we as humans must deal with.

Many people are likely further along in being Godly and Christ-like in areas. But we all fall short, and that's why the Gospel is so important.

I liken it to swimming, with the goal of swimming unaided to Hawaii from California. Some might make it farther than others, but all would drown on the way.

Feel free to let me know if I left some areas unadressed.

Herb

When reading your post, I was surprised to see the word 'perfect' used in reference to any human being. I believed you thought Mr. Russert was just like the word you used to describe him...perfect...in other words, error-free, never making mistakes.

I believe my definition is essentially the same.

If I could figure out a way to point out that you just did it too, and ignore you, I would.

So here's your well earned attention.

Mmmmmm. It's so attentiony.

Interesting exchange you two.

To me, there is nothing perfect, leaving only "as good as it gets". That's Russert, IMHO.

Like family camping, looking for a spot. You stumble onto one and it's just perfect! That's how I most often use the word. The other meaning is generally reserved for those non physical things, maybe real, maybe just ideological.

I've got your back, Marvin_the_martian. I'm not sure if you're a Dad, or if there's a Father's Day on Mars, but Happy Martian Father's Day to you.
