Is a documentary that will be showing at the Hollywood Theater June 13-19. I'm hoping to see this one.

Here's a link to the trailer.

Dan I don't think that is the purpose of the film.

If I get a chance to view it I'll let you know.

The purpose of this film is to HIGHLIGHT what has gone wrong on the Evangelical side of America. How they've twisted the truth about God and manipulated what he originally intended for man.

Watched this movie tonight with my wife and 15-year-old daughter.

What I saw and heard were all the talking points we have discussed on this message board in various threads.

I could see myself in some of the people. I saw people like Herb and Missing, and Skeptical and Vitalogy.

All points of view were well represented in sometimes humorous and profound ways.

Dan Merchant who is the host and producer of this documentary takes you on a journey that took over 3 years to produce. He literally went around the world wearing a jumpsuit that had all kinds of religious and anti-religious sayings and slogans.

It's a first rate production and since Dan Merchant is a homeboy Portland does get plenty of screen time. Dan was at this screening tonight and we had a chance to chat. We purchased the DVD of the documentary.

The bottom line that Dan is attempting to do is bring those of faith, i.e., conservatives and liberals and those of no belief system, to the dialogue table. Put away our differences and just talk. Much like the gatherings of pdxradio.com have attempted to do.

That scenario actual is played out in part of the film during a scene that uses the "Family Feud" setting that pits liberals against conservatives. You will need to see the film to hear what happened after the taping of show.

This movie will not ask you into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, even though Dan Merchant is a Christian and attends an evangelical church.

Dan really attempts to break down the walls between Christian's themselves as well as apologizing to gays and lesbians in a "confessional" during Portland's Gay/Lesbian Pride carnival. Some of the films most moving scene's happen during this segment.

You will see and hear staunch Christian Conservatives in the media as well as staunch Christian Liberals. Plenty of skeptics and non-believers too.

But there are plenty of wonderful surprises that did moisten my eyes and made me realize how much better I need to be at listening to those I disagree with.

I do highly recommend it. In talking with Dan afterwards we let him know our media background. He mentioned he had been interviewed by KPDQ and KUFO. We told him that both my wife and I have worked in Christian and mainstream radio. We both went from KPDQ to Z100. Dan got a good laugh.

One thought I did have while viewing the film was how we as a message board, at times, attempt to have an open dialogue to really understand each other. We have really tried in our disagreements to put on the other person's shoes. For that I am proud of us.

However, for the most part, it eventually degenerates to our usual talking points and we take weeks to get the nerve to try it again.

This movie encourages us to keep at it. Keep coming back to the table to be better listeners.

Sounds interesting, Chris. I know that I generally hold back when the board gets deep into the spiritual/religious threads, because I don't know how what I say will come across to others with different attitudes. And I don't want to become labeled, as a few have. Yet, I yearn for some hard, honest conversation about many of these kind of issues - it would be enlightening, educational and fun, at least for me. But many are easily offended by challenging thoughts or questions, and the community here is too important to risk off-putting great people due to some misunderstandings.

And as I have learned, the keyboard is not the most succinct way of dealing with complex issues that are deeply personal. Maybe at the next face-to-face we can plan to go watch this movie then get together afterwards for drinks and discussion?

I would be up for that!

And keyboard is tough...

We've done well though, in that I agree with Chris.

The labels... Well, I think that's an area for improvement. Labels suck, and of course we all are tempted --and do slap them on.

I think it's a learned thing. There have been some seriously personal things discussed here. The results have, on occasion, been profound. Mostly it's a mess.

I've few worries on that score. I'll say it right now. The messes have been, well! Messy. The good stuff has been just too good.

We can be at risk on the religion topic though. It's an extremely tough one, on all sides.

Thanks Chris! That's a movie I am very interested in seeing. Understanding others helps a lot.

Everyone, we are friends here. Don't know why, but we are. Suppose the exchange is a sobering reminder of the value of that.

"it eventually degenerates to our usual talking points"

Guilty! It can be tough to seriously engage in a discussion after the "talking points", "CAPS" or "Bible quoting" posters have decended on a thread. I'll try to refrain more.

Receptional you're welcome. And welcome to pdxradio.com. Feel free to share any thoughts you might have with us at any time.

Another quick point about the film.

No one in the documentary is seen in a "bad" or "biased" way. They are simply seen in the light that they personally shine.

They are plenty of people whom I thoroughly disagree with that present their perspective. Dan Merchant is careful not to "show anyone up." But he will draw some intriguing conclusions especially when he asks "Wait a minute, did they just agree on something?"

It was so refreshing to listen to those I disagree with and really try and hear their heart's message and how they came to that conclusion.

Chris, I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the documentary. I like the parallels you drew and how it directly relates to our pdxradio.com family. It makes we want to see the film even more.

"Maybe at the next face-to-face we can plan to go watch this movie then get together afterwards for drinks and discussion?"

Edselehr, I agree that experiencing this together would be an excellent idea. Missing is spot on when he describes the friendships and rivalries that dominate this forum. In real space, we could learn a great deal from one another in short order.

I also would like to welcome Receptional.

For those who wish to experience the documentary in the movie theater, the Hollywood Theater has it running I believe through June 19.

We saw the 7pm showing last night.

Actually pretty good for a Monday night. However they did play it during the weekend and said the turn out had been pretty strong.

Granted the Hollywood Theater is not your Lloyd Cinema's. Far more intimate.

Portland is the current test market.

Yeah, tough timing. Maybe a DVD party somewhere, sometime? There are places where we can get the back room, through it up on a screen and go for it that way.

If you check out the web site http://lordsaveusthemovie.com/ they do offer an opportunity for groups or organizations to view the film and then have follow up discussions.

I am currently attempting to have this film viewed by our church. Waiting to hear back from my pastor.

Every Thursday morning on our radio show we do a bit called "What's On the Bedside Table." It's basically a book review. But from time to time we expand it to include things like a movie.

We'll give our review of this film tomorrow morning.

Jeez! I thought you did a family-friendly show!

Oh wait, I'm thinking of "what's in the nightstand drawer"...sorry. I think Tom Leykis does that one.
