Neither, for me. I am just fine with the provisions that mave been made for me to hold my faith. I do not feel compelled to display it on things that are trite, ineffective to converting anyone and am able to go about my business without hindrance.

I don't need everyone I come in contact with to know what or that I believe anything. It's something I do privately and doesn't impedede any progress I wish to make.

Demanding that I have the right to put a cross on my license plate is worshiping a false god. ( And that's not even my primary motivating factor in deeming it stupid ).

" The Ten Commandments and the Lord's Prayer have an established place in teaching American constitutional history and civic virtue. He says they and other documents on display would teach morality, ethics and integrity."

That is a lie. It does not teach morality, ethics or integrity. Oh sure, you WISH it were that easy - OHHH to be able to just point to a bronze calf with a nice patina and be done. How convenient. Nevermind actually living any of them. Just having them on display is enough, eh?

But if it's THAT important to others, then yes. Go ahead and see if it holds up in the courts. There aren't other things that a person could do or spend money or time on. No other pressing matters which actually have an impact on our lives on Earth. Nope. It's all about appearances.

Lazy-ass freaks.

No matter what the ruling, I can still practice any faith I wish. No monument to it will ever change that. Others, apparently, need things like this. That's their problem.

Ah come on I asked fi....ok....

Morality means a code of conduct held to be authoritative in matters of right and wrong, morals are created by and define society, philosophy, religion, or individual conscience.

from Wikipedia

The Bible also has 10 "edicts" that apply in Exodus 20 and more fully reveiled in Matthew 22...Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the first and most important commandment. The second most important commandment is like this one. And it is, "Love others as much as you love yourself." All the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets are based on these two commandments...

I think that CJ meant that morality is (or should be) more than just a list of do's and don'ts, which is what the Ten Commandments is. It may set guidelines for moral behavior, but does simply acting morally (and only within the commandments list) make one a moral person? Does simply acting moral teach morality?

Good question...the verse is a question...

“But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said. “We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be set free’?”

someone in government might have got the verse wrong and ment the verse before...

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

>>Does simply acting moral teach morality?

I works for me...Matthew 7 from The Message version....

"Be wary of false preachers who smile a lot, dripping with practiced sincerity. Chances are they are out to rip you off some way or other. Don't be impressed with charisma; look for character. Who preachers are is the main thing, not what they say. A genuine leader will never exploit your emotions or your pocketbook. These diseased trees with their bad apples are going to be chopped down and burned.

So murdering the people of Chile was "setting them free" with truth?

I am with Vitalogy 100% on this point. If you are following those ten simple rules to the letter, then display them with pride. If you can cite the Gospel of John because your mission is just, then do it without reserve. In our current situation, our leaders cannot even embrace our Constitution, let alone follow those ten ancient rules for life or a verse about transparency. Heck, I would settle for just the Golden Rule if the folks in the rooms without windows would actually grok it and live by it.

Hardly.

We're talking about people who fly planes into buildings.

You can attempt to dismiss the dismantling of our nation's foundational underpinnings with the wave of a hand.

But it doesn't matter.

For while you may not have received the memo, the world doesn't revolve around those who accept partial birth abortion, same-sex marriage and euthanasia as acceptable, as they denounce the Boy Scouts, the Ten Commandments and reverence toward our Creator.

Our nation has clearly been blessed by the Almighty. Shake your fist at Him if you dare. But don't be surprised when He removes his covering of Grace upon our nation slouching toward Gomorrah.

" Just don't come handwringing to me when you're mugged by a thug who was never taught the Ten Commandments. "

Deal.

You say that as if those that are taught the Ten Commandments don't commit crimes. Which, of course, is patently false. They aren't even less LIKELY to commit crimes.

And again, displaying the Ten Commandments doesn't teach anyone anything. You are so caught up in symbols and appearances and being allowed to express anything and everything at every turn in every place. I have to tell you though, none of that makes any difference to people. I bet you cannot name ONE thing that has been done because someone was allowed to display something godly in a Government place. You can't honor the founding fathers or your faith privately? It has to be on display everywhere?

You are only asking for trouble because everyone who wants those things displayed cannot live up to them. So you exert all this effort in demanding they are displayed, then you wonder why you are held to some higher standard wihtin our society.

It's because you are a hypocrite and people really hate the shit. You waste what could be a genuinely noble effort by making everyone else listen to your religious beliefs, demanding that your side be represented, then you squander it all because you can NEVER live up to the things you claim to be so right. That causes resentment and distrust and and a fatigue from folks who only have " Well, they must just like power over others. Because if it was any other reason, I would see it. But since I don't, that is the only otehr option left."

And nobody likes to be messed with on that kind of level.

So you beg to have whatever you want displayed and pretend that having it displayed TEACHES people anything other than what you ACTUALLY do in your life. It's a cop out. You just want to pick a fight about this because you think it's easy to shame anyone who would challenge you - because, after all, you are fighting for God himself. How dare anyone challenge God. And you'ev got A LOT of poeple claiming to know the mind of God out there. You'd better ALL be right. Not ONE of you can be wrong or do anything wrong. ever. You know why? Because you fought for The Ten Commandments to be displayed - and the reason you wanted it was that it would reduce crime.

So you want a higher standard? Fine. You got it. You fuck up even ONCE and I call bullshit and you lose your right to preach to me. And that includes getting to display your idols everywhwre.

Deal?

But you are not fighting for God. You have peverted this into something that only speaks about you and your ways and your opinion and your interpretation - and your insecurities and your bigotry and your hypocrisy.

That about sums it up for me.

Hey Herb, just for fun, let's compare Deuteronomy 5:6 to 5:21 of the NRSV with the Qur'an:

"There is no other god beside God." (Qur'an 47:19)

"My Lord, make this a peaceful land, and protect me and my children from worshiping idols." (Qur'an 14:35)

"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments."

"Do not subject God's name to your casual swearing, that you may appear righteous, pious, or to attain credibility among the people." (Qur'an 2:224)

"You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not acquit anyone who misuses his name."

"O you who believe, when the Congregational Prayer (Salat Al-Jumu'ah) is announced on Friday, you shall hasten to the commemoration of GOD, and drop all business." (Qur'an 62:9)

"Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work - you, or your son or your daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or the resident alien in your towns, so that your male and female slave may rest as well as you. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day."

"....and your parents shall be honoured. As long as one or both of them live, you shall never (even) say to them, "Uff" (the slightest gesture of annoyance), nor shall you shout at them; you shall treat them amicably." (Qur'an 17:23)

"Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you."

"....anyone who murders any person who had not committed murder or horrendous crimes, it shall be as if he murdered all the people." (Qur'an 5:32)

"You shall not murder."

"You shall not commit adultery; it is a gross sin, and an evil behaviour." (Qur'an 17:32)

"Neither shall you commit adultery."

"The thief, male or female, you shall mark their hands as a punishment for their crime, and to serve as an example from God. God is Almighty, Most Wise." (Qur'an 5:38)

"Neither shall you steal."

"Do not withhold any testimony by concealing what you had witnessed. Anyone who withholds a testimony is sinful at heart." (Qur'an 2:283)

"Neither shall you bear false witness against your neighbor."

"And do not covet what we bestowed upon any other people. Such are temporary ornaments of this life, whereby we put them to the test. What your Lord provides for you is far better, and everlasting." (Qur'an 20:131)

"Neither shall you covet your neighbor's wife."

"Neither shall you desire your neighbor's house, or field, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

Wiki

Essentially the same list of ancient ideals and words to live by exists in both texts. You can be either frightened or enlightened, but you have a whole lot more in common with Arabs than you think. The facts are there whether you like it or not.

We only need to extend some grace and be accepting of other people with different backgrounds, religions and skin tones. Throughout the history our democratic experiment, that grace is an American ideal. One that many of us still hold dear and strive to achieve.

We could live in peace with one another if we simply acknowledged how much we have in common at our roots. It does not mean changing our beliefs. It only means dropping our prejudices, opening our eyes and smiling more often at our neighbors.

"...everyone who wants those things displayed cannot live up to them..."

A straw man.

Just because they're difficult doesn't mean we shouldn't have high ideals. Human nature often isn't very desirable.*

Not everyone wants to lower the bar.

You want more civility? Don't badmouth the display of God's Law.

Herb

*From The African Queen (Humphrey Bogart as Charlie Allnut, and Katherine Hepburn as Rose Sayer):

Did you compare the two lists of rules? What do you think of the parallels?

"You want more civility? Don't badmouth the display of God's Law."

CJ made a great post and you once again cherry picked and reacted. Oh well.

I think that questioning the value of public dollars going to a project or asking folks to live up to their lofty stone-carved standards is not badmouthing. We are witnessing monumental stupidity, callousness, avarice and greed. Since when was accountability a sin?

Anyone here can criticize a display of hypocrisy that we find laughable because we are Americans.

When one portends to usher in a new dawn of mono-theocratic rule in the guise of fighting the very same notion abroad, it is laughable.

When one uses words like "crusade" in an invasion that resembles an ancient blunder by the Roman Empire, it is laughable.

You bring up the planes and I get hung up on that verse from John.

When one emerges from a building emblazoned with the Gospel, then murders leaders and citizens around the globe in some twisted chess game, the laughter subsides.

When the same spooks cannot get the attention of the big cheese when someone is attacking us, it is beyond tragic.

How has the "truth set free" the victims of that horrific day? How has the "truth set free" the first responders and volunteers who are still refused the facts about their illnesses? How has the "truth set free" our brave troops who come home from a trumped up war to saccharine lip service and denial of benefits? How has the "truth set free" Americans when we distrust each other and our leaders more than we did during the Red Scare? How is the "truth set free" when secrets rule the day?

In fact, none of this is funny. Delusions, dollars, deities and derricks make for deadly and dangerous days. Not even the immense irony of Biblical proportions can save the moment. It is just damn sad. That is all.

Maybe you have Broadway, but not me. With that said, you now saying the Bible isn't to be taken literally, but instead only serves as a "benchmark" by which we should follow -- akin to the Golden Rule? This would seem to be contrary to nearly everything you’ve ever written about the Bible. Perhaps the Holy Spirit knocked you about the head and whispered “a living document”.

Right on Merkin! I promised to never quote the Bible except in cases of extreme hypocrisies and I believe I've done fairly well on that score. Finding a way to provoke any semblance of critical thought has been fruitless with some folks, but the interjections and reactions from others have been worth it.

It's funny, we have a whole group of folks who believe what they believe, but only a couple petrified to expand their base of knowledge. One does not have to believe in evolution, but it does help to have a healthy context for personal growth. I respect what other folks think, even when we disagree. When they are contrary without any way of backing up a position, I dunno whether I should feel a little pissed or a lot of pity.

Alfredo raised two questions central to the topic and they not only bear repeating, the forum deserves an answer:

It's amazing the things you can find if you only listen!

Faith in this day and age is a tough thing to hang onto.

Every night I say a prayer in the hope that theres a heaven
And every day Im more confused as the saints turn into sinners
All the heroes and legends I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay
And I feel this empty place inside so afraid that Ive lost my faith

Show me the way, show me the way
Take me tonight to the river
And wash my illusions away
Show me the way

And as I slowly drift to sleep, for a moment dreams are sacred
I close my eyes and know theres peace in a world so filled with hatred
That I wake up each morning and turn on the news to find weve so far to go
And I keep on hoping for a sign, so afraid that I just wont know

Show me the way, show me the way
Take me tonight to the mountain
And take my confusion away

And if I see a light, should I believe
Tell me how will I know

Show me the way, show me the way
Take me tonight to the river
And wash my illusions away
Show me the way, show me the way
Give me the strength and the courage
To believe that Ill get there someday
Show me the way

Every night I say a prayer
In the hope that theres a heaven...

AMEN!

"Thanks for the attack ass!"

Trixter, no matter what the subject of the thread is, no matter what the discussion is about, you pop in with one of your hate Bush tirades. What other possible conclusion would there be but that your brain has only 1 cell and it fully occupied with hating Bush?

>>Every night I say a prayer In the hope that theres a heaven...

from John 3...

And yet no one has ever gone up to heaven, but there is One Who has come down from heaven--the Son of Man [Himself], Who is (dwells, has His home) in heaven. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert [on a pole], so must [so it is necessary that] the Son of Man be lifted up (on the cross) In order that everyone who believes in Him [who cleaves to Him, trusts Him, and relies on Him] may not perish, but have eternal life and [actually] live forever! For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.

He shoots, he scores.
Deane nails it yet again.
Not that Trixter's 'one-note Johnny' anti-neo-con/hate-Bush routine isn't predictable, but spot on is spot on.
Way to go, Deane.

We should battle online in game-form somehow. Something besides Fantasy Moguls. I like that, but I'd like to have the option of a " pick up " game of something. Scrabble, Canasta ( I am awesome at Canasta - thanks Dad ), Poker, others.

Just like YOU and Herb hate Clinton (both). Being Evangelicals that's funny! Thought you were suppose to LOVE everyone like Jesus? Just like Herbocrite YOU once again show YOUR true colors and mold EVERYTHING to fit shit YOUR way!

Herbocrite...
Deane scores in YOUR NARROW minded world. She peddles the same fascists crap as YOU.

"Just like YOU and Herb hate Clinton (both)."

I don't believe either Herb or I made any posts indicated a personal dislike or hatred for Clinton. Only for what he did and stood for.

Speaking for myself, I think the Clintons are devious jerks, but I don't dislike them, I just prefer they be out of politics.

And there are no 'Bush Haters' on this forum either, just people who dislike what he does and stands for.

In fact, I'd love to sit down and have a beer with Bush. Or two, or three, or more. I'd love to see Bush shitfaced drunk and get him talking. That would be insanely entertaining. It might look something like this or this.

Good grief...anyone drunk is funny for a few minutes but then gets old...and these videos are "slowed down" edited/manipulated for propaganda effect/results/claims. Bush had a booze problem years ago but has not effected his life in recent presidential times.

Lets show your drunk stoopers on video and have a contest of the most laughs...I stay away from the stuff...makes you look stupid.

"Bush had a booze problem years ago but has not effected his life in recent presidential times."

I'd say it's affected his presidential times BIG time, as a lack of brain cells could be one plausible explanation for his incompetence.

The WPE confuses the idea of a fifth commandment with a command for a fifth:

Hammered on stage

Snockered at a press conference

Blitzed answering questions

While I was drinking a beer for breakfast in honor of the above video of Bush, I was skimming Broadmywayorthehighhwaytohell's posts, of which almost 100% have at least one spelling/grammar mistake (unless it's just pasted bible verses), I saw this from a few days ago:

"All of us have violated all ten of the commandments"

Huh? I had no idea!

Murder? Adultery? Making false idols? Coveting my neighbor's house, wife, slave, ox, ass, espresso maker, husband, or whatever they own?

Unless watching American Idol, and having a fantasy "crush" on some of the male posters here, I think I've avoided the biggies...I haven't dishonored my parents since my teens, I haven't worked on a Sunday in the last 16 years unless it was an emergency at work. I'm doing fairly well IMNSHO. HA!

No wonder BWay is so devout, he NEEDS to be, since he's guilty of all the biggies.

Video Killed The Radio Star.

Commandment violation.

Wife Swap.

Commandment violation.

My Super Sweet 16.

Basic human dignity violation. Commandment violation is in mediation right now. Surely there must be a way to make that show illegal.

Shot Of Love With Tila Tequila.

CDC violation. No known cures. Although it does lend credibility to an abstinence agenda.

Milf Island. " "20 MILFs, 50 eighth grade boys, no rules."

Not a commandment violation - 18th Amendment violation case in progress however.

I recall Deane calling Hillary Clinton a "bitch". If that isn't hateful, then I don't know what is hateful.

And I'm sure Broadway believes that the moon landings were a hoax. Those pictures were "A good use of edited/manipulated for propaganda effect/results/claims."

Ed, thanks for starting the tangent!

CJ, you are spot on and funny.

BW, I am on a crusade for political correctness, so I think you ought to change Broadway to Female Boulevard, or something far more reflective of your personality like Narrowpath.

The fact that these things were said "sober" and it took so little to make them appear otherwise is what prompted the audience both here and in the studio to laugh. No great lengths of production had to be taken. Unlike the Presidency, it was child's play.

What is truly "sobering" is how much of a fool our leader is and how many have paid the price. This is the laughter of an old fashioned wake. Not a hoary guffaw or wriggly titter or hand clapping chortle, but the deep bitter irony of gallows humor.

>>Broadway believes that the moon landings were a hoax

actually space travel facinates me and would love to go to outer space in my lifetime but don't bet on it...believe most press accounts of space travel.

>>I think you ought to change Broadway

It's a high school nic name and when I see my best buddy why he gave that name to me I keep forgetting his explaination...I emphasize "broad" for broadcasting...
