It's a short run down of the notable misleads from this primary season. Number one is just too funny, all things considered.

One of the best defenses to chain e-mail spam against a candidate is simple and anyone can do it. Just forward the letter to the media, the slandered campaign and the headquarters of the opponent. A simple subject line like "Who Sent This to Me?" will suffice. It does a variety of things.

First and foremost, it does not allow a candidate to pretend that he or she does not know the spam exists, or leave a candidate in the dark about spurious accusations. If thousands of people have forwarded an e-mail to both media and the candidates, there is a record that the campaigns know exactly what it going on. It is very important to CC both candidates and media outlets at the same time. Let them all see who received a copy.

Second, and equally important, it allows both the media and the candidates a chance to dig deeper for the truth. Not every person running for office will endorse a smear, but many do have fringe people among their supporters. Either way, the point of origin can be found by a savvy reporter, and refuted or denounced by the candidates.

Finally, it makes the playing field level. It benefits every constituent to keep people focused on them, not distractions. If everybody knows what everyone is up to, then candidates will be forced to focus on issues. If one media outlet discovers that another is spreading disinformation, they can call them out. Spam may seem like a fancy high tech dagger to a given candidate, but it can easily be turned into a whistling boomerang.

In some ways, the internet is the best thing to come along since the leaflets and soapboxes of the late 1700s. The potential level of accountability is astounding, but only if we let information develop and become vetted in a neutral and equal environment.

Ah, democracy.

I think I will send all of our companies "Viagra" spam to McCain and the republican convention. I hear they are a little "Soft" on "Getting UP" enough votes for him to get "Erected", I mean elected.

Sorry kids...thought this was a family forum. Hopefully Dark will "see the Light" soon.

With all the internet sources out there we can all find a web site to back our opinions...even extreme to extreme.

This has NEVER been a "family forum". Go somewhere else if that's what you're looking for.

DT, if you do that, then to be fair you'll have to send the democrats all the condom spam since we are all going to take it in the you-know-where if they are "erected".

"Erected".....What a Japanese politician gets!

You're right...don't know the DT! Sometimes on remotes I would rarely get a (male) listener that would just have all kinds of "pottymouth-adult sex verbage" that would just weird me out...sorry...just reminded.

Oh..on topic...go $$$$ for McCain!

I prefer to say the word "poop" myself but don't spend alot of time around items that belong in the sewer. Sorry, can't get into "lighten up" verbage like that but go ahead...make my day...actually all of you "challenge" me with all of your "rants" and the exchanges here are mostly fun...hey...sharing ideas is fun/human.

Dan we're pretty organic around here.

DT is the laugh track that we need from time to time. You missed a classic a year or so ago when he was in St. Louis. Had this board in stitches for one evening in particular. And we love to remind him of it as often as we can.

So the language gets a bit salty, it's nothing I haven't said myself or thought. It's all real man.

It looks like the Obama campaign is offering those of us who are his supporters to help fight these smears.

I'm signed up.
