I'm surprised we haven't honored this broadcaster on this board.

For those of us who grew up with "ABCs Wide World of Sports" Jim was the man.

The 1972 Summer Olympic games was one of Jim McKay's defining moments as a broadcaster. I was laid up in bed all that summer with Rhuematic fever, so I had plenty of time to watch the Olympics and all the drama that played out.

With so many sports people today trying to "out shock" us with their brand of sports reporting and ego sized salaries, Jim was a sports enthusiast about all kinds of sports.

He gave dignity to some of the more unknown sports long before extreme games were even a twinkling in anyone's eyes.

We lost one of the best.

Indeed, Jim McKay was in a class by himself. I think all storytelling in coverage of the Olympics can be traced to him... He set the bar very high.

"He set the bar very high."

Yup, if you botched a ski jump, he'd ensure you'd pay for it for the rest of your life! :-)

It was nice when ABC allowed Jim to cover the Olympics for NBC when it was being carried by that network recently.

There is a Portland connection to Jim McKay. Back in the mid-to-late 70's Wide World of Sports covered the little-known sport of barrel jumping. 1972 Benson High School alum Rolland Sylvester was the star of a segment of the program when he attemped to break the world record. He didn't. As I remember, his crash was used as "the agony of defeat" segment of the opening of the show for several years.

While I agree Jim McKay was one of the greatest sportscasters ever, this is the PORTLAND RADIO message board - so I'm not surprised this topic wasn't posted before now.

Well, I'm glad it WAS here on this side... We have no idea how many of today's local sports people were influenced by McKay's work...

not many...listen to the fan or the game...the updates are sentences with only subject and verb. The 20-somethings have never seen his work or, most likely, ever heard of Jim McKay.

Maybe, we're approaching this whole thing all wrong. As Goldielocks once said, "There, all gone!". :-)
