Thot I would start a non-religious thread thats close to heart...the stomach! When growing up I ate tons of homeade and drive-in/fast food burgers over the years..not so much now that my wife is vegetarian.

Red Robin has been a burger Disneyland...to much to choose and most really tasty with their frys. When I'm poor the dollar McD's double cheese...kinda greesy...and now theirs a new Sonic in my town I need to try out...but last weekend had a free BK double cheese Broiler (thanx the the Indy movie) It was good!
Red meat is now a rare experience for me now but still like to partake.

Excellent question, Broadway. I'd have to go with Stanich's on Fremont. I haven't had one of their hamburgers in years, but they are oh so very good. And the fries, very good too.

As for the drive-thru variety, it's Jack in the Box. A bacon cheeseburger with curly fries. Oh so very good.

I visited Sonic here in Salem for the first time this past Saturday.
I was favorably impressed.

Broadway,
I'm assuming you're in Salem, you might want to wait a while for the novelty to wear off..
There were cars stacked 6 deep waiting for a stall. All with their engines running.
I went up to the walk up order.
Simple cheeseburger & a cherry lemonade.

Among my favorites..
Burgerville
That burger place across from K-mart on Mission
Ritz Diner on Lancaster

Big Red's on Scholls Ferry Road in Tigard makes a great burger. Your choice of cheeses and it's loaded with all the goodies- raw onions, lettuce, pickles. And it's only 3 bucks WITH fries during happy hour 3-6 daily! Mmm... happy hour.

There's a place called the Giant. I think there are 2 locations, 1 in Lake Oswego and the other in Tigard. There's a picture of the burger, standing at attention, as they always are in pictures but never in real life and when they bring it, that's what it looks like!

Instant hit if it happens...heard they only wanted to stay in CA. I know of Oregon college kids (my own!) doing a "road trip" just to get a In and Out burger!

Amus, I have to agree. Growing up in St. Louis, there were White Castles everywhere. I have friends that love them. I can't stand them.

They don't call them "sliders" for nothing!!! (Slide in, slide out!)

That being said, there doesn't seem to be any middle ground in the White Castle debate. You either love them or hate them. I've never heard anybody say that they are just OK!

Alf's in McMinnville... a one-location independent with great burgers; made from scratch shakes too.

Probably the worst I've ever encountered came from a gas station in Redding. Seems that the ex-wrestling announcer "Mean Gene" Okerlund jumped his 15 minutes of fame to establish "Mean Gene's Burger" franchises at various locations within existing businesses. They were all pre-cooked and stored in warming trays. When the gas station attendant had a few minutes, he'd wrap one up in a foil sheet (with Mean Gene's picture all over it) and sheepishly slide it your way with eyes cast downward. A terrible product.

When I was in High School (South Salem 1972 - 1975) there was a local burger joint on South Commercial that advertised their "famous peanut burger".
Basically a regular hamburger with peanut butter on it.
Sounds horrible, but I thought it was really good.

Coincidentally, they were also an evangelically oriented business.
This lead to one of the funiest readerbord displays I've ever seen.

Due to the loss of several letters from the reader board, it read as follows:

"Are you prepared? Jesus is coming..... with sauce"

The Bomber features a burger with peanut butter. I think they've offered it for decades. It's pretty good. If you don't know about the Bomber, you must be new to the area. It's a World War II plane that's been parked on McLoughlin Blvd since 1947.

There was a program on burgers on "Diner, Drive-In's and Dives" on the Food Network recently where that was one of the featured burgers from some place out east IIRC.

Sounds gross, but I'd probably try it, if they used good peanut butter. Not Jif or Skippy. IMHO if it says anything on the ingredient label other than "Peanuts and Salt" it doesn't classify as good peanut butter!

Trader Joe's had awesome peanut butter!

There is a little market / deli just outside of Rainier Oregon, right where the Longview bridge is.

They make absolutely killer burgers. I stopped in on a lark, and will come back for sure.

Burgers: The Fireplace, Paramus, N.J.

Don't know what it's like now, but when I was growing up their burgers were hands down, the best in Bergen County.

Sacks Front Avenue ... worked there my first year in Oregon (1976).
Never ate the food, can't comment. Not a fun place to work at that time.

Anybody ever get back to the midwest and tried the chain Culver's?

Great burgers with lightly buttered buns. Beats any other fast food burger chain in my opinion.

Somewhat off topic but close, what was the name of the short-lived cheapo burger chain that was around about 10 years ago? It was a drive-through with no seating and rock-bottom prices. The only one I can identify was on the southwest corner of SE 82nd and Powell.
