Serial cat killer targets PSU area

12:54 PM PDT on Monday, June 2, 2008

By ANTONIA GIEDWOYN, kgw.com Staff

PORTLAND, Ore. – Five cats were found mutilated and killed in downtown Portland, authorities said Monday.

KGW report on cat killer The cats were found in and around the Portland State University campus.

The Oregon Humane Society is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people who killed and mutilated the animals.

"These cats were ruthlessly attacked and killed by someone with utter disregard for the pain they inflicted. It's difficult to imagine how someone could do this to an animal," said Dr. Kris Otteman, OHS director of shelter medicine.

The most recent incident occurred May 29th, when the body of an adult male cat was discovered.

An autopsy confirmed that the wounds suffered by the pet were consistent with those inflicted on four kittens whose bodies were found in late April.

The owners of the cats are not known at this time. The cat found on May 29th was a black and white adult male cat that had been neutered, indicating that it was a pet, not a stray.

"Violent crimes against animals don't happen in isolation. They are usually undertaken by someone with a serious mental condition who eventually commits violence against another person. We urge anyone with information about these terrible crimes to call OHS," said OHS Executive Director Sharon Harmon.

The public can call a special OHS tip hotline at (503) 285-7722, ext. 412, and leave a recorded message with information relating to the deaths of the five cats.

This story Really hits home with me because I had a neighbor who owned a beautiful Blue Point Siameese cat who was tortured to death by someone who repeatidly shot it to death with a bee bee gun, and the cat killer was never found!(this happend last summer)!

This is one of MAJOR pet peeves!!!

Cats should be kept inside regardless of whether there is a sicko running around killing them of or not.

I hate cats that come in my yard and crap in our bark dust and landscaping.

I can't let my dogs run around the neighborhood crapping in people’s yards so why should people let their cats run loose.

People who let their cats roam the neighborhood are PPPO. (Piss Poor Pet Owners)

Hey Skybill, I agree, Cats really don't need to be outdoors. They are not like dogs, sure the excercise for cats are benefitial, BUT in this day and age, they don't need to be outdoors!

Any while you're at it, keep the right wingers inside, too.
I hate it when they crap on my world. I know they have a lot of fecal matter inside them, but they need to amend the scoop law to include their droppings.

Nope, cats aren't dogs. When's the last time you heard about a killer domestic cat chewing up some 3 year old left unsupervised.

Roaming dogs do way more damage than domestic cats outdoors. Feral cats can be reported to Animal control like stray dogs can.

Domestic pets are a reflection of their owners. If a cat is crapping in your yard, it's no more obnoxious than someone walking a dog on a leash, letting them crap in your yard, and not picking it up. Ever challenge one of these clowns, "Oh, I forgot my baggie today!" Yeah, right.

100,000% correct! Can’t stand cats.

The wife and kids have 2 cats. I take NO claim to them. Won't feed them, clean up after them or even acknowledge them unless they are being annoying, which is 100% of the time!

Bill- You wouldn't care if a dog took a shit in your yard,......

If it wasn't my dog, I'd be just as pissed.

If your (generic) dog craps in someone's yard and you don't clean it up, you fall into the PPPO category too. (For those who missed it, see my post above for definition of PPPO)

I'm tempted to start putting traps out for the neighbor’s cats. When I catch them, I'll take them to the Humane society....in Salem! The owners will never think to look for them there!

Either that or I'll just drop them off at the nearest Chinese restaurant!

MC74, as long as you clean up after yourself, go for it! (I hope you are good at dodging paint balls with your pants around your ankles!!)

Amus, good catch! I didn't even think of that when I typed it!

It is just common courtesy to not let your cat roam the neighborhood crapping in other people’s yard.

Anything else is just PPPO.

Skybill--spot on.

God, I miss the days when I was working "cat patrol" in da 'hood..... ;o)

Several years ago our housing area had a feral cat problem. Apparently one of the neighbour's cats decided to strike out and raise a little "family" of its own. There were also the neighbours who wouldn't take responsibility for their own cats---

This was my "weapon" of choice:
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/ca belas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20712-cat20716-cat20790&i d=0054024228953a&navCount=5&podId=0054024&parentId=cat20790&masterpathid=&navAct ion=push&catalogCode=IJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20790 (click)

Typically I would use a small amount of catnip as "bait". (It's surprising how well that works. ;o) The cat would walk in, smelling the catnip, and would practically get the fright of its life as the door slammed shut behind it and it couldn't get out. Next day, either my Dad or I would take the cat--still in the trap--down to the Humane society downtown.

Sure it pissed off the neighbours, but I usually came back to them with the simple explanation "if you own a cat, you need to be responsible for it and keep it in your own yard." Of course, there were the episodes of the cat poop we'd leave on the neighbours' front stoop, but that's a different story for a different time..........

We are starting to develop a feral cat problem somewhat here at the apt. complex......looks like I need to dig the trap out of my folks' basement, if they haven't sold it or given it to Goodwill by now.

I beg to differ. I have three outside cats on the farm and do not have any mice problems. They have a good place to sleep and I give them a scoop of cat food every day. They are very happy and stay around. Now, if I were to live in a housing developement type area I would do the litter box thing and expect others to do the same. If your cat is on my freshly washed car you can claim it at the peking moon cafe! You might need to order multiple items though!

DT, to me that's a different situation. It sounds as though you have enough property that your cats won't wander into and poop in the neighbor’s yard.

I wish I had 10 acres or so!

My personal take is that EVERY cat should be spayed or neutered within 2 months of birth.

I have 10 acres, one neighbor has 120 and the other 45, so I don't think they care if the cats crap in their field. Just watch out for Bessy's land mines though. All three were spayed right off. Just needed mousers, not kittens.

Ok, So I agree with a lot of your points! Feral cats need to be taken care of- taken to the humane society. BUT, if you see a cat, that is walking on your car or pooping in your yard, you should alert the owner and let them know how you feel before you take them to Humane Society. Because chances are the cat will be destroyed at the "not so humane society."
Inflicting pain on any animal is ridiculous. I think the problem goes back to the owners. For some reason people think they can buy a cat and then just let it loose and not take care of it. Well that is false, If you buy an animal, you must take responsibility and take care of it. And if you don't neuder your pet, than you should get fined!
But torturing cats just to get a boner off of it is FUCKED UP!
Skybill When you die , you will come back as a cat. Karma is a bitch, and it is one thing I totally believe in.

Probably so.

While I can't stand cats, I don't advocate anybody torturing them or any animal for that matter.

When they catch him/her/them (how's that for PC!) they should do the same thing to them that they did to the cats.

Actually Bill, those are not cats that are pooping in your yard. I feel really embarrassed for admiting this (Sigh) It was me Bill, Yes it was me. I came over and started pooping in your yard. Why would I do that? To be honest it was jealousy. Those Petunias you have planted in your front yard look so good, that you're making my front yard look bad Bill! You always have the best looking lawn in the neighborhood Bill, its starting to really make others look bad. I felt like I had to take action. Sorry about the bad odor, I've been eating A LOT OF CHEESE lately.
I'm asking for your forgiveness, do you accept?
Lets just put all the Crap aside(no pun intended) and start off with a clean slate, ok?

Plenty of birds poop on my car, yet I've never had a cat poop on it!

I hope that they catch the sicko who is responsible for this. By the way, did they ever catch the person who was poisoning dogs in city parks a few years ago?

Every single person I know that owns birds as pets are frickin' nuts. It's like their brain is wired SO different than mine. And that, by default, COUGH , makes them nuts - ahem.

But really, I have a hard time tuning out the TV if my kid is talking. Or, uh, whatever combination would make me look like a good parent. But I could not imagine having a damned McCaw squaking at me while I try and have a conversation...or even just a thought.

Insane, man.
