From reading that article, I can't figure out whether Castro really wants the trade sanctions lifted or not. On the one hand, he says that the sanctions are responsible for poverty and suffering in Cuba. On the other hand, he criticizes Obama's proposal for Cuban-Americans being allowed to send aid to relative in Cuba, saying that this would lead to "consumerism" and an "unsustainable" way of life. If the sanctions were lifted, there certainly would be a LOT more "consumerism" going on in Cuba.

Socialists and Communists can be a bit on the confused side, can't they?

I think that when people take political rhetoric to an extreme, they end up with positions that are illogical or impractical. People in this kind of mindset are not thinking about identifying problems and crafting solutions. Instead, they are thinking, "how do I fit my observations to the political/economic models that I support?" I think that Castro has this problem, but I also see a lot of this in the Libertarian party. Thus, I don't think that this is exclusive to socialists, communists, and Marxists.

I wonder what kind of government would work for Cuba? They are charming, decent people, and Cuba would make a good neighbor with a freedom oriented government.

" I wonder what kind of government would work for Cuba? "

Just the fact that you'd ask it that way is pretty awesome. I'll just take it at face value and not read anything into it that would suggest that you have a pre-determined notion of what would work. It's difficult to read sarcasm accurately online sometimes. So if you were being sarcastic, then I was wrong to like it.

Unless, of course, you do think only one way would work; Your way. Then I take it back.

Otherwise, that's probably the best question anyone has ever asked around here. It seems so simple and obvious to do so - but we get all tangled up sometimes.

Maybe we can get the good cigars and music again.

Agreed, good question.
