Just curious. Do you purchase them "On Demand" from Comcast Cable, OR Do you hit up the old Blockbuster??

Lately I've been going to the Mcdonalds and renting the Redbox Dvd's for only a dollar.(what a deal). They ususally have the current DVd's, im actually pretty impressed with the whole idea. This weekend I noticed huge Lines Coming From The Red Box DVD rentals at Mcdonalds. I would have to think that this is hurting the big chains like Blockbuster, Hollywood Video ect.

I just rented "There will be blood" From Mcdonalds the other day. I've been hearing so many good things about the movie.

Used to go to Hollywood, then almost exclusively from the local library (easy since my wife works there). Now I'm finding lots of stuff on streaming websites. If you don't mind a 3"x 5" image that is often of marginal quality and a spotty selection of flicks, this is the cheapest and most convenient way to go.

They closed down the Hollywood Video right near me! I think Net Flix has eatin away all of their customers. I usually watch free Movies on Comcast On demand. Although they show the dumbest free movies on on Demand. "Howard the Duck". Yup, they were showing it last week!

Like Chris, I don't rent movies - I get them from the Library. I'd try Redbox though - a friend has used it, but it's rare that I really want to watch a new release.

Don't. Haven't found anything at the library either (most of the stuff seems to be on perpetual hold or stolen).
I've almost completely removed commercial visual media from my life in favor of radio and the internet. Haven't been happier.

Betweeen HBO, Encore, all the free movies we have through On-Demand, we haven't rented a movie in years.

Once in a while I'll put a newer movie on hold at the library and it may take months for it to show up if there's a long hold queue. I waited a few months for "The Departed" - which I had already seen so it was just a matter of seeing it again, whenever it showed up. If you go to the library website every now and then and put a few movies (and books) on hold, eventually you start getting regular flicks to watch.

I do browse through the "current releases" DVD section though at the library and often find at least something I'm interested in watching.

I haven't rented a movie in almost 10 years. When DVDs came out, I started buying everything we watch. We have over 1800 in the collection so far.

I've now switched to buying everything only in Blu-ray.

Hey Deane, I forgot about that one. Im gonna have to rent that one. Hey if theres any REALLY good Dvd's that you have recently purchased, and that you really enjoy, LET US KNOW! There is nothing worse than renting a boring DVD.
Im gonna have to rent Nixon.
What about the movie "Bobby". Was that also an Oliver Stone movie?

"We "rent" from the library. No charge."

Same here.

Either that, or I hit up a friend, neighbour or certain despised relative. Why else would I have "DVD Shrink" and "Imgburn" running on my computer and a freshly-purchased stack of DVDR-DL discs next to it? ;o) *smirk*

We don't watch many movies around here so why put out the money. Our DVD player is the one that came with the kids iMac (even though I can play DVD's on my laptop and Mac Pro) the iMac has a larger screen and decent sound.

The only first run movies our family has seen have been the Harry Potter movies only because we've read all the books and our kids really want to see the movies. Outside of that...nada.

"What about the movie "Bobby". Was that also an Oliver Stone movie?"

It was good IMO, though not an Oliver Stone. I thought it was about Bobby Kennedy, but it was more about the folks at the hotel and the activities leading up to the tragic event.

We run a movie almost every night in our front projection theater, so we eat up a lot of material. We've watched most watchable things twice, and are now starting to watch some for a third time. We usually let them rest 3 or 4 years before rewatching.

If you like political movies, Truman starring Gary Sinise is excellent. It was an HBO movie.

Thirteen Days, the story of the Cuban missile crisis is good.

I was thinking there was one about Lyndon Johnson that Lyndon was well portrayed in but I can't remember what it was. It may have been Oliver Stone's JFK, I'm not sure.

Gary Sinise can act when given decent roles.

Thirteen Days was good.

I rent everywhere. I cancelled Netflix after getting throttled to a degree that was just too much. I switched to Blockbuster for their return a mailed DVD and walk away with an instore DVD while we send you another one from your list.

Rarely do I use Comcast for pay per view - but I do it sometimes.

I have been meaning to see Bobby. Heard it was good.

My brother just gave me a PS3 and a Wii. So I'll be checking out Blue Ray as soon as I repair my TV from the damage from the Wii.

What happened to the TV? Did the strap come off the Nunchaku (actually, that's the proper Japanese pronunciation of it) controller and smash through the screen? ;o)

Hollywood Video. I only want to watch what I'm in the mood for at that very moment. Can't do that with Netflix. I do check out Redbox on the off chance a decent new release is in the box!

If it's a great movie I usually buy it at Circuit City on Tuesday new release day. Usually $3 or $4 off of regular prices until that Friday then back to regular price. Otherwise I rent at Hollywood Video. Hate BlockBuster with a passion! Been considering doing the NetFlix thing though. I did the math and would save both time and money especially with gas what it is these days!

Just took my young cousins to see The New Indiana Jones movie and THEY LOVED IT! Very entertaining and money well worth the price. Now being the Indiana Jones enthusiast that I am, I was unimpressed with the new movie. Too many graphic animations on the movie. That being said, it is still a great movie that the whole family can enjoy! While the movie was good, It was not even close to as good as the original movies. I just bought the box set of the first 3 Indiana Jones movies. BOY are those movies still GREAT!!! My favorite is "Last Crusade". Just watched it last night, havent seen it in a while and It was so much fun.

How exactly are Hollywood Video and Blockbuster surviving and staying in business when we have other choices like Redbox, Netflix, and cable's OnDemand?

Is it inventory? Cause it can't be for service. Or can it? All of the ma & pop video stores are all but gone.

I visited my nearest Redbox yesterday morning and rented Juno, Charlie Wilson's War, and King of California. While I saw Juno in theatres (IMHO best movie of last year. Ellen Page is the next Jodie Foster.) Charlie Wilson's War was better than I thought it would be but I was dissapointed by Julia Roberts performance. Seymour Hoffman is a genius in any role he chooses and so is Tom Hanks. King of California is Micheal Douglas' best performance in a long while and the story is believable as we have all dealt with people with mental illness before and how it can be a strain on loved ones lives.

Hollywood is shifting slowly to game rentals, which are likely to remain a rental staple.

We usually rent from Videorama on N. Lombard. It's local and small, but it has a pretty good selection.

Other than that, we usually use On Demand from Comcast.

Hey Chris the Game Crazy's at Hollywood Video are always packed, unlike the regular movie part of the store. I agree, I think Game Crazy is whats keeping Hollywood in Business. There is so much competion, I would sure hate to be in the Movie Rental business right now.

Netflix. It's brilliant. Perfect for watching series programming on DVD. Just queue up the seasons and go to town, one at a time.

I quit renting from stores years ago. Never looked back.

Even before Netflix, we just pooled our DVD purchases with others, sharing the discs as we saw the needs.
