We watched this last night and enjoyed it. My wife, who didn't really know the details of what happened, could not believe that FL was not allowed to do a recount.

I didn't see the movie, so I don't know how accurate it was. Had the recount continued, Gore would still have lost, something that is lost on the sore losers supporting Gore.

From Wikipedia:

"The media reported the results of the study during the week after November 12, 2001. The results of the study showed that, had the limited county by county recounts requested by the Gore team been completed, Bush would still have been the winner of the election. Neither candidate had formally requested a total statewide recount.

The recount also showed that the only way that Al Gore could have tallied more votes was by using counting methods that were never requested by any party, including "overvotes" — spoiled ballots containing more than one vote for an office."

And from the left wing New York Times:

Not sure what Wiki you're looking at.

"In the aftermath of the election, the first independent recount was conducted by The Miami Herald and USA Today. Counting only "undervotes" where no vote is detected by machine, and not considering "overvotes", such as when a voter marks a ballot for the same candidate using both the labeled space or punch-out and via the write-in space,[38] Bush would have won in all legally requested recount scenarios, but a statewide recount would have given Gore a narrow victory.

Additionally, The Media Consortium hired the National Opinion Research Center to examine 175,010 ballots that were never counted in Florida. [5] The investigation took 8 months and cost $900,000.[citation needed] Their results showed that the winning candidate varied based on the method used to include or interpret ballots.[39] For cases where all of their examiners agreed, the nine different recount scenarios resulted in Bush prevailing four times, and Gore prevailing in the other five. Ironically enough, under the recount rules initially requested by Gore, Bush would have won, and under the rules requested by Bush, Gore would have won."

The bottom line is that the Republicans did every thing they could to not count the votes.

Do you even read what you post Deane?

From your first link:

But the consortium, looking at a broader group of rejected ballots than those covered in the court decisions, 175,010 in all, found that Mr. Gore might have won if the courts had ordered a full statewide recount of all the rejected ballots. This also assumes that county canvassing boards would have reached the same conclusions about the disputed ballots that the consortium's independent observers did. The findings indicate that Mr. Gore might have eked out a victory if he had pursued in court a course like the one he publicly advocated when he called on the state to "count all the votes."

In addition, the review found statistical support for the complaints of many voters, particularly elderly Democrats in Palm Beach County, who said in interviews after the election that confusing ballot designs may have led them to spoil their ballots by voting for more than one candidate.

Neither side asked the court to consider a state wide recount.

and here we are in 2008 and the Democrats aren't even counting Florida votes this time around.....

Not supporting any candidate in this issue, but just hoping the issue of "DISENFRANCHISED VOTER" doesn't appear again..........

Deane is correct - had Gore counted the ballots the way he proposed, he would have lost the recount.

Funny, but one of Bush's arguments in Bush v. Gore was that the proposed recount (the Gore method - county by county) violated his 14th amemdment rights because it was *not* a statewide recount (and, that a statewide recount was impractical given the timelines). Had the Supreme Court agreed with Bush, but disagreed with his timeline argument and ordered a "fair" statewide recount, Gore would have won.
