Some food places I really miss are

Jamies- Old fashion burgers. Remember that place?? It was a 60's themed burger place. They had the best ice cream sundays. They had a bunch of locations including one on 23rd AVE in Northwest portland. They also had one Across from Fred Meyers in Beaverton.

The other place I really miss was Boston market. Those Chicken Carver Combos were heaven on earth. So Tasty!

What are Your favorite food joints that are no longer with us, and why were they so great???

Oh Thats Right missing, I forgot about Spanky's, which also became Spunkys. They had one right across from Mcdonalds on Cedar hills Blvd, right were the new Starbucks is. That was a great place. Im trying to remember when that place closed down.
Im thinking 1993 or around that time!

Rax. They used to have one at the (old) Jantzen Beach mall in the 80s and into the early 90s, right across from the merry-go-round. That place got me addicted to French Dip beef sandwiches when I was five years old!

Another was Max's Diner (was upstairs at Van Mall near Meier & Frank. A religious bookstore occupies that location now.) It was styled like a 50's-era diner, complete with a Seeburg 45RPM jukebox. (Someone told me a while ago that after they moved from Van Mall, they opened up a "stand-alone" location in Portland.......I have yet to find it, if they are even still in business.)

That and Boston Market. I loved their chicken pot pies!

I used to frequent the one on the Tigard highway, and the one on Grand / Union.

Jamies
I don't miss their awful commercials.

The places I do miss:

Farrels/Portland Ice Cream Company - yes the place in the Lloyd District. The mixed-use development that stands there now is so bland it looks like any recent construction in the metro area.

Hot-n-Now. Dirt cheap. 'Nuff said.

Wong's King in Sellwood. Been to the place on Division which doesn't have the same style of food. Amateur reviews of the new restaurant (Panda King) via Letters to the Editor in the Sellwood Bee say the place is nowhere as good as it used to be.

93 - 94 sounds about right. Seems to me we lost KBBT then too. The Beat KBBT anyway.
970 The Beat moved to 107.5 FM in July 1996, each station simulcasting each other; then flipped to Modern AC a month later (970 and 107.5 ran different programming, but the same format until 970 changed to classic country about another month or two later). I still miss that station, but I know there's no way it could come back in the way it could match the past.
And to think so many people liked a voicetracked and automated station!

Bob's Burgers in Eugene. 19 cent burgers..yumm

Sam's Hofbrau near Portland State. A favorite place to go after work for a brew and some sliced roast beef, or prime rib, or turkey..yum. I really miss hanging out at this place.

Tino's Italian restaurant in Eugene. Sometimes we'd drive down from PDX just to have lunch or dinner there.

Escape from New York Pizza, downtown PDX.

Organ Grinder pizza on 82nd. Our kids loved this place above all pizza places.

Mama's Cafe at about SE 144th & Stark. Mama, Paul, Paul Jr. and the rest of the family. It was a 12 stool place that served the best breakfast and lunch, all served by a friendly family. If you ate here, you felt like one of the family.

Pixie Kitchen. Lincoln City. What can I say? Childhood memories.

Speck Chicken on 122nd & Glisan. Where our grandparents took us on Sundays.

Sweet Tibbie Dunbars. Remember their happy hour? We spent too much time drinking and eating here. Wait. I got that backwards. We didn't spend nearly enough time drinking and eating there.

Pancake Corner, Lloyd Center. As a little kid, I had my first little pigs in a blanket there.

Hefty's (great milkshakes)

Kenny Roger's Chicken (didn't care for the chicken, but the other stuff was somewhat yummy.)

970 KBBT could exist as a generation X oldies station. Heck, I ought to be doing an internet radio station with that format myself! :-)

Wobboh and Darktemper:

If you like Organ Grinder and Uncle Milt's, one of the guys behind both of those is Dave Wallery of Wallery's Pizza in West Salem. Found out about him one day when I was trying his pizza at his original Keizer location and mentioned the sauce tasted pretty close to something I enjoyed at UM and OG years back.

He then laughed and gave me the scoop. Next time you head over the Willamette River into West Salem, stay on Hwy 22 to Dallas/Independence/Monmouth and take the next exit. If he's still open, which I think he is, he's in the back south corner of that little old mall where the Safeway was years back when I lived in the neighborhood.

Mentioned that crazy old jock from the Q105 and KUPL days sent ya there and he will start laughing! Great guy and EXCELLENT pizza. I think his daughter might be running it most of the time now, but same recipe.

Enjoy!

Is the Hum Dinger in Cedar Hills area still around? I recall eating some tasty deep fried clam strips there. My mom used to work there when she was a kid.I absolutely FREAKED out when The Rock Creek Teavern burned to the ground. That was a big favortie place of mine...then they rebuilt it and all was well.

Then there was The Sweetwater Grill on West Union and Cornelius Pass Road. I loved that place until it burned down.

It replaced another diner that had it's busy season during Christmas tree harvesting and I worked there...until it burned down...wait a minu...hmmm...well I worked at Black Angus in Salem for 19 years as a cheesy dj...until someoen got shot and it burned.

Oh my god, I'm firestarter!

Wallery's is good pizza. Tasha ( his daughter ) and I know each other a bit.

Yes! I loved their meatloaf. Other long-gone restaurants on my list include:

Kenny Rogers Roasters (they had this giant spit with chickens going round and round and round)

A Vietnamese Pho place, whose name I can't remember, that was across the street from the Hillsboro airport on Cornell and 25th.

Skeptical: By Hefty's, did you actually mean Herfy's? A burger chain with a Hereford cow as it's mascot that rose and crashed quickly in the early '70s. I remember going there for pretty good burgers, better than McD's at the time...another patron shares some more detailed reminiscences here. I still have a Matchbox van with "62 KGW" and "Herfy's" emblazoned on it.

I also miss the Organ Grinder. A unique concept, a unique building, and tasty pizza.

I've always wondered what ever happened to "Cart De Frisco", a sidewalk vendor on 13th Street in Eugene in the late '80s. They made the most delicious chicken and cabbage sandwiches...I still crave them. If I could find them again I'd plan a trip right now.

Dave Wallery of Wallery's Pizza in West Salem his business partner also has a location in Keizer called JC's Pizza again very similar and even cheaper in price and slightly in quality to Wallery's in West Salem. great fn' pizza. And might I add that Dave Wallery is one of the nicest persons I have ever met in my lifetime. His devotion to not only his business but also his community is far and away what most people do to contribute to the greater good.

I miss Cucina Cucina, MacheesemoMouse (anyone got a recipe for there boss sauce and or there Cactus Juice?), Ferrells Ice Cream Parlor (I have fond childhood memories of me and my mother eating at the Washington Square location), and finally Bob's Hamburgers (the Brute was the best!)

I'll agree with some above. Loved Herfy's. Home of the "Hefty Burger". Started in Seattle area, chained out over Western Washington and Western Oregon. There are some places in the Seattle area that still use the name but I don't think it's the same owners.

Only downside, my brother ended up getting a job at a Herfy's in our Seattle View Ridge neighborhood, circa 1977. He came home smelling like grease. Like many fast food workers, he lasted less than three months. But he got free food!

I think the Pietro's Pizza locations went by the way Skippers recently did, sold. Oh wait, Skippers financially did the belly flop and area managers had a chance to buy the franchise name from the main man who owns the ones in Albany, Salem, Eugene, Klamath Falls, etc.

BJ's in the Portland area are the most of the old Pietro's.

Shyguy - thanks, forgot about JC's.

Oh, and on Shakey's... I don't know if it's still open, but if you are ever heading down to Jamaica, yes the island in the Carribean. I used to frequent the one there many moons ago before my radio days. They were usually out of half the pizza toppings, but taste was just like the one back home!

My Dad's first job was at Herfy's. That, of course, was many years before he started at C--- M--- (where he's been for almost 30 years. ;o) Likewise, Mum started out at the Engine House at Jantzen Beach.

Of course by the time I came onto the scene 24 years ago, it was known as "Pietro's Engine House Pizza". We used to eat there occasionally when I was but a tiny young Motozak.

Yeah, I miss Sunshine Pizza Exchange. I call Smokey's occasionally for delivery, and even go in there from time to time. Fills the void but just isn't the same as the old "Sunshine Exchange"! (The SPE building over on 4th Plain and 503 intersection, next to the Qwest place is still standing, but it is currently a Namaste restaurant.)

Ah, everyone has sparked up my memory once again... The original Spic and Span in Downtown Vancouver is gone :-( but used to love getting a burger there!

If we didn't do that, then it was over to Burgerville #2 (that's still downtown) or Burgerville #1 up on the heights for a shrimp burger basket! Yippee!!! The original BV building is next to the last one on Mill Plain Blvd near the Oxford Athletic Club.

Hey, curious the Bob's Burgers as I used to go to the one in Salem and a few others... there is a Bob's looking logo but fancy dinner presence up in Burlington, WA off the freeway, and another one going in near the US/Canada border. Is this the same group from down south. I drive back and forth to Vancouver A LOT and have been thinking about stopping by, but wasn't sure what the deal is? Anyone know the scoop on that?

Ding, ding, ding, another bell just went off! Parkerhouse in Camas off SR14. Back in the days when the food was great, especially the steaks!

The River Crossing, trying to remember that one, was that the boat on the Willamette past the Broadway Bridge, or the location of the old railroad cars in Vancouver near the train station? It's all a bit blurry right now like after a bottle of cabernet... hic!

Kahtik--

Spic & Span isn't gone, it's just a Muchas Gracias now. ;o)

(I haven't thought of that place in a *really long* time. I used to love the "Spic Burger" or whatever it was called.)

Edit add:
The Parkerhouse is open again, apparently owned by a horse racer named Victor Espinosa. It reopened a few years ago. Supposedly they intended to keep the decor and other things at Parker House as they were years ago. (I haven't been there in almost 20 years, so I don't know specifically.)

They are even still using the old sign on Hiway 14!

I tried to not think about the Muchas Gracias name in there, it's just not the same. Yes, I think you're right on the "Spic Burger". I thought I heard something about the Parkerhouse from a buddy of mine now living in Washougal, but thought he was pulling my chain. Appreciate it.

DT:
Ditto for you on the RL skinny. Didn't know that. Yes, the Quay was grand food back then, the it sputtered again, and then another resurgence in the mid 90's thanks to Justin coming in there. I used to work with those guys through my radio promotions because they were a great team.

Ah... wait, wait for it...

The Little Colonel Chicken Bucket or something close to that name in the Salmon Creek area where there now sits the new Burgerville, used to LOVE that greasy chicken they had. My arteries were not big fans, but the stomach lining was!

Ah, and how everytime I drive the 5 over JB, the old Waddles for a meal. My grandmother in her days used to run the Jantzen Beach Olympic Swimming Pool and take us over there for breakfast and lunch. Now I guess I can see another type of fowl doing their thang. Great breasts and wings I've heard.

There's still a Pietro's down in Milwaukie, with must be one of the original neon signs, just off McLoughlin.

I grew up eating at a local Abby's pizza. They disappeared quite a few years ago, then in the last few years came back. Their canadian bacon and tomato pizza is major nostalgia comfort food for me.

We also would often stop at Van's on Sandy near 148th. The building and sign (with another name) are still there, but it's no longer the delicious grease pit it once was.

My Granma used to work as a supervisor for Red Lion, back when their Central Reservations office was downtown Vancouver, on Main Street---and later on 112th near Farmer's Insurance and the Ranger station, in the building which is now a police office.

She used to get complimentary dinners at the Quay and Parker House years ago (that is, until Red Lion fell "under new ownership" in the early-90s.) My folks reportedly celebrated her 50th birthday at Parker House in 1984.

JT, there are three in Vancouver.
1 in Hazel Dell, Orchards, and one on St Johns.

I think the one in Orchards is the cleaner of the bunch, but they are old and showing it.

If I might recommend a better Pizza, drive to the Ridgefield exit #14 on I-5 and just as you take the exit to the right is a strip mall with Pappa Pete's Pizza. Get the pepperoni pizza. If you ever ate at Engine House Pizza you will remember the little round crispy pepperoni's and corn meal under the crust!

Also gang, since I'm not in the PDX area anymore, is the Safari Club out in Estacada still there?

Also, is the Huckleberry Inn still up at Government Camp? Spent many a Pray For Snow party there in my early Warren Miller Ski Film days.

One more, but it was in Astoria, so most of you would know... there used to be a little tiny Italian Restaurant near the old bathrooms on the main drag. Don't know when it disappeared or what happened, just curious on that too?

As a kid, we used to go to Smokey's in Orchards all the time. They would literally pile on the canadian bacon, thin but very large pieces, onto thier pizzas. Pepperoni the same way. But then they started using a less expensive type of both canadian bacon and pepperoni. Wasn't as good.

Another good pizza joint in Vancouver is Juliano's on Mill Plain at about 145th -- roughly. Very good pizza.

Steak Burger in Hazel Dell. You gotta try their Onion Rings. Now there are TWO hospitals nearby to serve your heart needs.

Smokey's Pizza. I grew up near one of their joints -- supposedly the best pizza in the world -- and had to eat there all the time. It was only after I left home did I actually start to like pizza because I found out that nearly every other pizza joint makes far better pizza than the crap Smokey's made.

Yeah, Steakburger, always a good twist too. Heard that was up for sale!

AH, remembered something in Vancouver from many years back known for their vanilla ice cream or orange sherbet or the TWIST, POLAR KING! Used to be on St. John's next to an old local grocery store.

Shakey's on Hwy 99 in Hazel Dell! As a 2nd grader, I loved to watch them make the pizzas through that big window. Every kid in the place would be watching and guessing which one was theirs.

Ahhh...Steakburger, and then Baskin-Robbins for dessert!

Kahtik: I believe you're thinking of Keil's (the grocery store) and the little Polar King building is a laundromat now...In high school, we used to get into Sellberg's Tavern easily, and bought our after -Sellberg's TJ Swann Easy Nights at Keil's. Gives me a hangover just thinking about it :-)

While we are injecting a bit of hope for the good old places, Fairley's Pharmacy, Tebo's, Stark Street Pizza and Top O' Hill are still around. Heck, you might even bump into Daria at Pal's Shanty.

I want to thank Frank Nudo for all the years of Nick's Coney Island. It was the last place in Portland that a person could watch a baseball game in a proper setting. It was a refuge from the changes on the street and a spot to talk about anything you wanted to so long as it was horsehide and hickory. I often tried to catch at least one game of the World Series with a classic colon cramping lunch, and when I still drank, a Heidelberg from Kenny.

There was a nice fellow with a truck on that little spot off Marine Drive where folks used to park and watch the airplanes. He had a great sense of humor, sold kosher dogs and would refill your drink if you were a thirsty kid. Once in a while, he would also be at the model airplane strip at Delta Park. Does anybody else remember him?

Grizzly Bear Pizza was the first place I ever heard bluegrass. Like John Fahey, it ruined my life.

Farrell's had great ice cream, a player piano, a freaky waitstaff that could border on sadistic. This may have been due to the fact that my whole gradeschool class was there acting like insurgents. With the family, they would dose you with more than enough sugar to give you either an argument or a coma that began on the way home.

Peppinno's Tacos is still my personal measuring stick for all burritos.

Organ Grinder Pizza was the first place I actually felt the sonic impact of music loud enough to resonate in my skeletal frame. It scared the shit out of me at first, but I loved every minute of it.

Seaton Pharmacy was the anchor of our little neighborhood. A soda fountain with the legendary Cora, a post office that was friendly even when they were buried at Christmastime, and a news stand that carried both Thrasher and BMX Plus in the 80s. Yosh and his pharmacy were a neighborhood institution.

The old Old Spaghetti Factory downtown was much more fun. I loved the silent movies, period decorations and how it felt kinda cramped in a good way.

The Matterhorn, Plush Pippin and Heidi's Swiss Village were places my Uncle Bill and Aunt Nita loved. Since they liked to take my family out for long drives in one of their shiny Imperials, we did too. They also liked to eat at the aforementioned Tebo's, and an obvious choice, Elmer's.

Waddle's coleslaw is a distant but glorious memory now. One could wax poetic about the architecture, the menu, and the big duck. It was a truly historic place that was also woven into the lives of Portlanders for decades.

Cupie Cone was typical of so many great little neighborhood places that are sorely missed.

Rose's Ice Cream was atypical of so many great little neighborhood places that are sorely missed. Sure, they had the Coney dogs and potato salad, but one of their milkshakes were enough food to last all day.

Circus Burger was the most underrated place to take a date for a personality test. A seemingly benign environment, but with stresses that show you more about someone than you ever expected to see. The din of screaming children and a looming cliff that sweetly whispers "landslide" was a potent combination.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Eve's Buffet. Not that it was great, but we did all eat there at some point.

Vertiburger cooked the meat in a unique way, but I liked the trivia contest, prize wheel and friendly staff even more. A real bright spot in greater Hillsboro when it was still relatively rural.

The late night downtown-ish spots like Besaw's, Quality Pie and a few others have faded into the mists of time.

Recent disappointing closings include Burrito Loco on Denver and Saigon Kitchen on Division. I think Mark's place counts too.

Great thread everybody!

I remember going to the Old Spaghetti Factory in downtown. Man, was that place ever packed. It seemed like the wait went on forever. Too though, I was pretty young and time seems to move rather slowly when you’re young.

Someone mentioned Red Robin. I could never understand why Red Robin moved out of its location on Burnside. Every time I was there, it was reasonably busy.

I grew up in Springfield and LOVED Bob's. I lived on their regular burgers with extra onions. When my girlfriend went to work there, I thought I had died and gone to heaven .. but, of course, I had to lay off the extra onions. I also loved the Herfy's on Sandy Blvd. It got me through college. When we'd take a trip to Vernonia, we stopped at the Arctic Circle in Beaverton (Acey Burgers!!), I still stop by Arctic Circle in McMinnville for spectacular milkshakes. Pietro's had some cool pizza parlors next to the river off Franklin Boulevard in Glenwood (between Springfield and Eugene) I can't find the Abby's Pizza (started by Abby Broughton in Roseburg) that used to be on Stark in Gresham, but I still make a stop when I'm in Newberg, Keizer, Salem and Dallas (yes, Dallas, Oregon. My daughter lives in the area) My youngest son's first job was at Abby's. Thanks for all the memories.

I miss the old Dunkin Donuts!!
It seems like Nobody eats donuts anymore, which is understandable because they are lard pellets, But I have been craving one of those pink frosted donuts. Nohing like having a good donut to dunk in your coffee in the morning. I also loved their old fashion twists.

Does anybody know if there are still any Dunkin Donuts in portland?? I have been trying to find one but have had no luck!
I don't like Krispy Kreme, those are everywhere!

The last Dunkin' Doughnuts (I think on the west coast) closed in Salem a couple of months ago. It's still a doughnut shop. I did discover a Winchell's (check out their Bearclaws) on Hwy. 99E near Oregon City (hey, there's an Arctic Circle right there, too)

Victoria Station, John's Landing area. I remember when they built it. It quickly became my grandparents favorite restaurant and we went there often. The building made of old rail cars was like another world, and we kids always wanted to be seated in the caboose, of course!

This is where my love affair with Prime Rib began. They also had an excellent Caesar Salad.

You would THINK it would be Tualatin there, but is really is on the western border of Lake Oswego:

17815 65th Ave, Lake Oswego, OR 97035-5203

Fuddrucker's has the location listed on their website as Lake Oswego as well, although with the wrong zip code.

I hate to think I was wrong about something for 28 years, SO after searching the web I was able to confirm Fuddruckers is in the TUALATIN city limits!

And here's a slow loading link to prove it!: http://www.ci.oswego.or.us/engineer/maps/LO_City.pdf

It clearly shows the Southlake Center stores as well as the nearby Safeway and Joe's inside the Tualatin city limits!

That area near the Boones Ferry rd exit of I-5 is in a weird Lake Oswego/Tigard/Tualatin convergence where the city limits, phone prefixes, zip codes, police/fire/school districts, etc all disagree.

Also, Besaws is very open and still serves a yummy breakfast.
