Let me clarify that.
Are there any of you who like to work with wood and power tools.
And for further clarification, Wood from tree's and tools like saws.

I just had the first chance to use my new Ridgid (No pun) TS3650 10" Table Saw. This thing is sweet. It has a 36" cutting capacity to the right of the blade and a really nice fence system. All cast iron table top plus a nice caster system for ease of movement. Some assembly required!

Highly Recommend:

I have a friend who has been trying to get me into woodworking. I want to try my hand in it as a hobby, but I'm reluctant to follow his suggestion to turn it into a career.

He has a Delta Unisaw. The Unisaw has a high powered 240 volt motor that spins up the blade very quickly. The cuts always come out very smooth and precise.

I enjoy building structures and stuff, even a bit of logging, but fine detailed and cabinetmaking-type woodworking isn't up my alley! (No patience!)

My latest woodworking project was completely rebuilding a birchwood interior travel trailer circa 1962. A fun project and very doable for the average woodworker with only basic skills - like me.

DT, Rockler is one of my favorite stores!!

I often do pen turning demonstrations for them.

They have an awesome and extremely knowledgeable staff.

Here is the best accessory you can buy for your safety while using your table saw;

The GRR-Ripper. Easily worth twice what it costs!

Here is a great fence if you want to upgrade yours;

I have it on my saw and can't recommend it highly enough!

Shameless self promotion:

There are a couple of the pens I make on it; however the site is still under construction so no laughing!

Edit add: My Table saw;

Go to the Grizzly site and order their catalog. You'll drool for hours!

You guys are a bunch of WIMPS!

I carve traditional Columbia River Indian items by hand. No electricity. No modern power tools. No vise, Just hand held knives, and an adze or two. And lots of band-aids.

Check out my favorite tools, handmade on Lopez Island. Beautiful and comfy in the hand. Drool on, boys!

No power tools?

That's sacrilege!

Power Tools, arrgh, arrgh, arrgh!

Edit add: Mrs M, those are nice knives! There is something to be said for good hand tools!

There is a lady who does wood carving demonstrations at Woodcrafters (woodcrafters.us
212 NE 6th Ave,Portland, OR 97232, (503) 231-0226) on Saturdays.

She does nice work.

Carving takes talent, so that rules me out! I can turn a mean pen or pencil, but I couldn't carve to save my life!

Bill, great stationary saw but a little pricy for me. Plus I needed mine portable and with the large right of blade 36" ripping capacity it was perfect for my needs. And $549.00 at Home Depot was a pretty good value.

I will attest to Skybill's pen-turning prowress, as he was gracious enough to give me one of his pens the last time he came through PDX (while I was still there). Great stuff indeed!

I know I'm sounding like a one note Charlie here...

I really do like woodworking..

But my share of medical bills last year could have paid for one of these...

Mrs. M., I didn't actually lose my thumb, but pain-wise, I might as well have. But that was a long time ago. Nowadays I treat sharp objects with respect!

{And $549.00 at Home Depot was a pretty good value.}

I've never heard anybody complain about Ridgid saws!

I put mine on a rolling base; I don't have the room in my shop (pronounced garage) for a saw to be stationary!

Has anyone here ever worked with a CNC router? I see that there is a tabletop consumer version of it now - and it looks good, for the price. But I have bigger ideas and would like to talk with a potential collablrator on something like that/this.

CJ, how big of one are you looking for?

Are you looking to do wood or metal?

Rockler has one (that may be the table top one your are referring to) that looks cool.

They do demos with it every once in a while.

If you want to see a demo, I can call Joe out at the store and ask him when the next one is. I'd like to see it too.

I'm looking for one that can cut through wood. ( of possibly foam ) The plasma cutters that go through metal is overkill for me. I need/am interest in one that can cut things about 3 feet x 3 feet with a relief of no more than 6 inches. Think signs and singage that would be mounted inside businesses. Stuff like that. But I have an actual interest in something more creative too. It's more the learning curve with the programming of 3-D models that makes it a challenge for me.

I saw a sticker on the back of a truck the other day that said "Got wood?"

Now are they talking about an erection or a piece of ply wood?
