...stop pitching up their music, and tweak the playlist to play more rhythmic tracks? I was at a place earlier today that had Z100 on in the background earlier today, when they were playing that Madonna '4 minutes to save the world' song, it sounded like the actual tempo/speed, not too fast as it used to be. Also seem to hear more hip-hop/rap on the station (more than usual). I should mention that I don't actually listen much, but I've been to plenty of other places that use it as background music or filler or whatever.

Yup, Ive noticed that too Newflyer! Somebody over at Cheap Channel finally got a clue and fixed the pitch. One thing I've noticed with Jammin 1075 is that the format is still slightly different than Jammin 95.5. The variety on the new Jammin 1075 is really POOR!!! Z100 has put A LOT more variety in the music and they are playing a lot more new rap/hiphop!!! IF Jammin 1075 wants to win they HAVE To stay on top of the new music or else they will get eatin alive! I have to say, Im unimpressed with the music on jammin 1075, the variety is poor. I'm hearing the same 5 songs all the time. Z100 has much bigger variety of hip hop! Jammin 95.5 had a lot better variety also. I also find it a bit weird that PK is doing the imaging voices on the new Jammin 1075. I assume thats just temporary untill they get things rolling. I still hope Jammin 1075 uses "ST JOHN" for their imaging, that guy is awesome. He is over the top, and you always know what station is playing when you hear his voice! Mark Adams used "st john" the entire time he was at Jammin.

You might want to take another listen. Z100's music is still being chipmunked.

FYI... the reason a station pitches the music up is generally not to get another commercial in, but to get more songs in per hour. Personally, I'm not a fan of pitching music. Having worked at a few of the big dogs when I was in Portland, 90% were pitched nearly 4%, even the country stations. Now when it comes to more commercials, CBS was notorious for Mel's Minute once an hour. There was one unit each hour that was NEVER to be deleted, as it was a M Karmazon spot, usually in most of the midday and afternoon breaks. Ain't radio grand!?

I was always under the impression that they pitched songs to make the station sound exciting and the competition, drab by comparison.

That was certainly how the practice started semoochie. I was first exposed to the process back at KGW in '77 - and was told that it made the music on KYTE and KPAM seem dull by comparison. Today, of course, everything from pitching up the music to the earthquake in China is due to Clear Channel's greed.

Songs don't produce income COMMERCIALS do! And if all your 60s are 59 seconds, you can program 61 an hour! Maybe they should pitch the commercials instead!
