I ain't talking about leftie rightie stuff neither. Was watching it tonight and there was a story on there about a teacher at wilson High School I believe that was charged with molesting young female studends.

The scene of the report:
In front of the school

The camera angle:

Just enough to skew the sign in the background to say: "Home of the Trojan" instead of "Home of the Trojans"
Booooooo....cheap shot

Also, repeated references to local police officers as "Cops". Gimme a break, they deserve a little more respect than that.

All in all annoying with the sound effects they have blasting you between stories.

Vent Complete....end-of-line!

What really frustrates me about the Channel 12 news is when they string the viewers along for a long time with teasers, but the story that was being promoted ends up containing very little useful information. Such was the case in the cancer-cell phone use study story. "I waited around to watch this?" was all I could say.

Channel 12 News is the best.

Wayne, Shauna and the rest of their great team do an awesome job...and the ratings confirm it.

And to those leftists who don't enjoy such stellar programming, they can follow their own advice and simply turn the channel.

What about the rightists? Can they change the channel too?

The gripe against Channel 12 news isn't really about left vs. right or democrat vs. republican. It's more that it does nothing more than sensationalize drugs and crime attempting to shock the viewers rather than cover real news in the Portland area. It's TV news' version of driving by a car wreck and trying not to look.

Fox 12 news does suck. There's nothing political about their news, but all they report on is sensational local tabloid crap that's not really news. It's news for the mentally challenged that need bright colors and cool sounds to keep the interest of viewers.

I prefer NW News Channel 8 myself. Better programming, in HD by the way.

Tony Martinez is a genuine good guy. I liked him back on Z-100 too. Andy Carson is also cool by all accounts. Still, it ought to tell you something when the traffic guy and the weatherman are far and away the best of the bunch in a newsroom.

The independent station we all grew up loving is not around anymore folks.

Channel 12 is dead.

It's futile really. You get this big teaser about something really, REALLY COOL!, as opposed to the crap that's on right now, right?

In the case of that cell phone study story, I had to wait about 20 minutes into the newscast to see the story. They had started promoting it at least 20 minutes before the news started. With all that hype, I thought that they were going to have an interview with the researcher and a thorough explanation of the research work, given how much hype they gave the story. WRONG!! They presented less information than the brief story that I had heard on KGO the night before. They didn't even state what the researcher's name was!!!!

The KPTV news is the LAZY (WO)MAN's news. It has likely nothing to do with the affiliation with the FOX network. Most likely, the Channel 12 news sucks because the management of Channel 12 is CHEAP and they have LOW STANDARDS. It is easy to send a camera man out to take pictures of a car crash or a crime scene. Most of the stories that they air require very little research.

The 60/40 technique of news teasing has been around for awhile and can be seen on other PDX stations. Basically, you give 60% of the story away on the tease, the other 40% on the story itself. Of course it is frustrating, but guess what? Ratings-wise, it works. That's why they do it. And the longer they make you wait, the better the rating.

The cable news networks are also just as, if not more, guilty of this.

Maybe so.

However, I can also add, it more or less ended my consumption of local news.

As soon as there were enough sources to fill the local gap, that was it.

The percentage of fluff and tease is too high to justify investing the viewing time.

--->and when I wrote "they" I meant TV broadcasters in general. Local news isn't all that good, across the board. Has it's moments, but not enough of them to warrant regular viewing.

IMHO, it's a tired formula that plays it way too safe.

Herbaceous Herb sez~
"Channel 12 News is the best.

Wayne, Shauna and the rest of their great team do an awesome job...blah blah blah ratings confirm it....blah blah leftists who don't enjoy such stellar programming, blah blah blah blah blah.............."

Yeah, you would say that. But remember: the local "news" programming on FOX 12 does NOT make it FOX News Channel. Two similar, albeit very different products. Bear that well in mind.

Oh yeah, KPTV (in my view, flame it as you please) died the day Ramblin' Rod retired years ago. UPN wasn't much help either, but at least I did get "Star Trek Voyager" out of that one. (Still enjoy that show, by the way.)

Alfredo, I have to agree with you on the teaser/mostly-useless-news bit. If what I want to see doesn't come on after the second time I see it advertised, I usually reach straight for the remote!

My problem with KPTV is after the 10:30pm mark, everything is filler. From entertainment news to health related reports from stations in neverneverland, I don't find it at all interesting.

But I do enjoy the 4pm news on KPTV. They do a pretty good job covering crime and punishment stories, an area of interest to me. LOL. Obviously, the mantra at KPTV is if it bleeds, it leads.

Look.

Local news that's watched and which viewers deem important includes weather, information about crime in our neighborhoods, and traffic reports. KPTV does all this well.

In addition, KPTV gives you a 'heads up' on food safety with dirty dining. Don't tell me you don't want to know who's dishing out bad food. We all want to know. So don't feign this 'I'm better than the rest of you' stuff. How elitist.

I also don't have to wait until 11 to watch, like most of the other broadcasts.

KPTV gets a big 'thumbs up' from the Herbster...and I'm far from alone on this.

I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry

Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I dont have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em all around

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who
Comes on at five
She can tell you bout the plane crash with a gleam
In her eye
Its interesting when people die-
Give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation?
Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a
Running bet
Get the widow on the set!
We need dirty laundry

You dont really need to find out whats going on
You dont really want to know just how far its gone
Just leave well enough alone
Eat your dirty laundry

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre stiff
Kick em all around

Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybodys pie
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo
We can dance and sing
When its said and done we havent told you a thing
We all know that crap is king
Give us dirty laundry!

Go ahead and try to wave away the fact that most viewers expect to be informed about child molesters being re-located in our neighborhoods. Or which residence has been designated a hazardous meth house.

"Didn't say any such thing about child molesters or methamphetamine."

Then explain the association with Dirty Laundry.

Channel 12 News generally covers pertinent issues that most people want to know about.
I want to know about drug dealers and pervs in my neighborhood, and I don't want to get sick from eating unsafe food.

ALL local news channels go salacious during sweeps week. Look at the other 10 or so months of the year.

Channel 12 gets it. Packaging and labels aside, they have a sense of what viewers expect in their day-to-day lives.

"Hey Zak, thanks for sending me the pic of you on your last outing! Hope you continue to heal and you get your ride back together soon!"

Just a reminder, learned from experience: ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOUR BOLTS (and loose ends) ARE TIED BEFORE RIDING!

This is what I never have liked about photographers: they make things look far less painful than they really are. Getting UP in the air wasn't hard; it was the coming DOWN that was the most painful!

*laughs*

(Actually had an experience similar to that about a year and a half ago at our property annex in G-dale, only involving mountain bikes: the quick-release skewer [the flimsy little quarter-inch axle that holds the wheel into the fork, such that you literally need only flip a lever to release it] actually snapped off--broke in two--while coming to a hard landing. I broke my lower left arm [in fact my wrist is still a little sore to this day] and screwed up my right knee even more than it already has been in my 24 years on this earth. On Christmas Eve at Work, about a week after it was finally declared I didn't need to wear the arm brace any more, I tripped on something at work and sliced my arm open on the edge of a copy machine, requiring five stitches.........but that's another story for another time. I've already thrown this thread far enough off-topic as it is ;o)

Remember: always wear your helmet! (That's what Santa brought me last Xmas.)

A set of these and these are good to have as well...........

75,000 people gather for an Obama rally in downtown today and the best the KPTV.com website can do is lead its website with information about some stabbing in SE Portland. Typical FOX 12. Unless it involves blood and guts, it doesn't get ample coverage. I guess that's what the FOX brand is all about these days.

So what WAS the attendance for the last " I care more about staying alive than seeing yet another politician " rally?

You and, who, your dog?

Why not just say " More people are interested in bathing " and cling to that as some sort of standard with which to gauge any enthusiasm for anything? It's the same thing, right? " More people ate a sandwich than attended the Obama rally."

Heck, why not include people from Kentucky? They could have come. Lazy bastards. Or wine collectors? Maybe your barometer needs to be retooled.

Or NO - I know what you are waiting for; You are waiting for some kind of number of illegal aliens that attended to be announced so you can dismiss the crowd as " unable to effect the election." ( I'm not that far off, am I? You'd LOVE to have someone else seed a thought for you ).

A few weeks ago, I asked someone staffing a Obama info table near Saturday Market about things like the surveillance society, eroding civil rights, and why none of the major candidates are bringing any of this stuff up... they said it isn't an issue!

Oh, and in the interest of equal time, when I asked a Clinton table staffer a few minutes later, their comment was "I don't know."

On the subject of Fraud 12 News, I haven't watched them in years. Sounds like not much has changed since this 2005 Willamette Week article:
First. Live. Loco.
They completely lost me for good on Sept. 20, 2005... family had been watching to see some election results as I was intensely involved with a ballot measure campaign in Clark Co... they never saw anything except a "Meth Tax" in Cowlitz Co. I told them wait for the 11 PM news anywhere else (we turned on Ch. 2). About 10 minutes in, there we all are, celebrating and jumping up and down like we'd just saved the world.

The more desperate they come, the more vicious the attacks. Given Herb’s unqualified allegiance to bigot and anti-Semite of noted renowned Richard M. Nixon, I’m sure we’ll hear him begin with the race baiting in short order.

And too, I’m sure the Right to Life crowd is feeling desperate. I'm mean really, they jumped in bed with the GOP like Johns at the Mustang Ranch. They’ve made hay with the sleaziest political movement in recent history, so we shouldn’t be surprised how low they get this election cycle.
